Thats a good analogy for what is going on. If the government finds out that I am involved in something from reading an email that I said the statements in, then shame on me.
But if the government comes bashing down my door because they think that I'm talking in code and because they can't think of a reason that I needed to change a course abruptly in college, thats different. As long as competency and common sense are used to moniter the population then there shouldn't be too many problems.
well, actual people who use computers on a daily basis don't usually look at banner ads, but regular people do. I have friends who actually click on the ads saying "You have an urgent message waiting". This type of "wanted poster" as the fbi calls it is intended for those people who read a page totally before moving on, not people who don't read the ads.
bah, you don't know what you are talking about.
This movie is going to rock, kick ass enterprise gets the living SHI* knocked out of it and then comes back for some good time phaser action while picard deals with this upstart clone and bitch slaps him back to whatever tank he came out of.
must go to movie, be a good slave to star trek, blow a load when enterprise pulls some manoveur and saves the day!
I think that he covered this in the article, the reason that cell phone delivery wasn't an option was that often cell phones won't work in extremly rural areas and thus the problem of going off the road in buttstump nowhere where there is no cell coverage is what this device is ment to solve with sat's.
sure we only have to divert the main body of the asteroid by that amount, but what about the cloud of debris and smaller asteroids that follow one of the big suckers, some of those pieces could still cause widespread devestation on our planet, a nuclear detonation in space would only serve to fragment the asteroid more and cause us to die just the same. I think that we have more important problems facing our planet than destruction by an asteroid, problems we can actually do something about.
hopefully sites dedicated to religious practices will preach some tolerance for other faiths. the same goes for race sites, teaching kids about multiculturalism and tolernace for other races will go a long way to making the world a better place and creating less ignorant people. education is the way that the world will survive.
there not talking about making the whole internet like this, just a certian domain in a certian country, if you don't want your kids to be in there then just don't join, its not like its a forced thing, and if the parents don't agree with the content or how it is presented then they have to option to get out, like its supposed to be. this is a good thing, we have the rest of our lives to become jaded cynical bastards who do nothing but critizise the government for its efforts, why not let children under 12 have a sanatized internet domain where they can play and have fun without looking at pr0n. and chat groups that are moderated and monitered for kids are a GOOD thing, sure the potential for propaganda is there but thats what parental education and guidence is needed for. I like this, i won't join right now as i don't have kids, but if i did then i would consider this as an alternative to the larger internet.
It would be cool if there were sites dedicated to homework help and research for school papers, news from the world explained in terms that kids can understand would also be a good thing, but ultimatly its the parents who decide if they want their children to view this material or not.
So before you get on the anti-censorship bandwagon and call and idea down because it has one bad thing wrong, think of how many benifits it has and weigh the idea on its merits, then make the choice.
who doesn't want to see cartoons getting fingerd.
people need to be shocked out of the coccoon that the government has put them in, the world is a dirty, filthy place...get used to it and grow up.
every society on earth has had to deal with terrorists at some time or another. There is no easy way to stop the threat that someone could unleash some plague, detonate some bomb or shoot unarmed people. The solution that the US has decided on seems to be surveilance of its own citizens and of anyone new comming into the country. For right or wrong this seems to be a decision that was reached by the people that were elected in the US by the people. The American people have become used to having alot of freedoms that most other nations on earth don't give to the ir citizens, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the right to keep and bear arms, the right to due process of law, the right to have privacy in your home. These rights are granted to all in the US, unfortunatly this also means that they get granted to people who would attack the US from within.
Saying that your not a terrorist and that the FBI should not be monitering you doesn't work, how are the authorities supposed to know what you are thinking? What you are planning to do? Investigation seems to be a way that this can be accomplished but it means throwing away all the rights that the American people have lived so long with and have fought so hard to preserve, 2 wars and innumerable conflicts have been fought by the US to "preserve and maintain our way of life", you can't get rid of that and still call yourself an American.
Its a dicey issue to be certian, balancing rights with the need for the authorities to protect Americans from their enemies.
I wonder what the comments were that caused Nam Tai to sue AOL for the identity of their user. Unless anyone gave away information that was confidential to the company and that could affect their stock prices or proprietary designs i don't see why they could be sued for speaking freely on the net.
i remember slashdot running a story some time ago about microsoft doing something like this...i can't remember if they got away with it though. does anyone have any more information or a legal opinion on wheather or not this is actually legal for companies to do.
Portable server in a box. A snowstorm knocked out your SUNFire at a remote site, you truck up there and find that the box is fried, just plug this in and copy the backup data to it and let it rip.
very good for that type of application.
I find myself needing to say that the only authors better than Kevin J. Anderson (that I have read anyway, and i consider myself quite well read in this area) have been Kim Stanley Robinson (Ramma books) and Orsen Scott Card (Ender series). I found that the dune books (the originals) were fantastic, however they are a little hard to get through in parts. Brian Herbert writes in a more modern style than his father which is more entertaining than his dads style, perhaps this is what you have a problem with, I understand that change is quite hard on people who confine themselves to reading only acclaimed books that others have told them about rather than people who seek new authors on a regular basis.
I for one was delighted to see that someone took up the dune franchise and made more books and did such a good job of them in the process. I like seeing the roots of the problems faced in the first series and espically where amal came from and how Teliaxeu got it. You are entitled to your opinions regarding these books, but for you to dismiss them out of hand without reading them simply because of the author and other peoples opinions is worse than the catholic church censoring Gallelao.
your right, a condom doesn't work if you don't put it on, but if its a low quality condom full of holes does it really do its job, or does it provide a false sense of securlty to those who use it.
really well said.
I work for a university technology department and I have seen some pretty incompetent people have their jobs saved because of a thing called "seniority". "seniority" seems to mean that the old employee who has been there forever keeps his jobs when the cuts come down because of a thing called "bumping". "bumping" is when a less qualified but older union member kicks a younger person out of his job just because the managment cut his position. This has happened to a number of friends of mine who had no choice but to be fired from their positions so that the older person could keep working, even though they had better qualificaitons than the people who were bumping them.
unions work in the mining business, for hospital workers and for factory workers for safty reasons only. educators don't need unions and neither do technology workers.
I think it will be pretty cool to have stealth craft outfitted with silent lasers. missiles can be tracked by radar after they are fired and travel considerably slower than light, a laser travels at the speed of light, kind of hard to defend against... thats assuming you don't need to carry around a truck full of chemicals to fire the weapon however...
Perhaps laws are different in sweeden than north america. I really don't think that this would even get to court here.
This is a prime example of a company lashing out at an external agency for a mixup that the company made and won't admit to. I wonder if anyone would have noticed at all if they hadn't called attention to it...i sure wouldn't.
yes patches are free...for the sparc version of Solaris.
Sun will do what it wants just like microsoft will do what it wants. This won't hurt sun that much as their core business doesn't care about x86 at all anyway, its like microsoft saying that they will support the sparc architecture in windows XP professional, for only $500 initially and $100 a month for updates, it won't mean that they will lose business. perhaps a few people who use solaris on intel platforms will get burned by this but i don't think it will affect SUN's bottom line any.

So if the balloon did go into space and picked up something, then it can be said to be extraterrestrial.

The first group. Dress really doesn't speak to programming quality, but it does to personal commitment to professionalism. I haven't looked at any statistics for this but it seems if you look sharp at the interview then people tend to take you more seriously than if you showed up wearing torn jeans and a KISS T-shirt. just my $.02 worth.
Editing HTML from the command line in a shell is much more time-efficient, IMHO.
I might remind you that you are posting on a blog now? A weblog makes for a MUCH easier site setup and maintinance experience. Check out Postnuke for an example of a very easy to setup blog.
simple solution, get more arts people to join slashdot. its a proven fact that arts people spell correctly more often than science or math people...i won't even go into the spelling habits of computer techs.
is that if i release code under the GPL and Bill Gates takes that code, works it into Windows in some fashion and then sells Windows with my code included, I still have the right to use the original GPL code in any other product that i may want to develope, even though it is a part of Windows now.
And Microsoft can't do anything about this?
Pretty good deal actually, i mean if you don't want your code worked into commercial products then dont release it under the GPL!! That is also the freedom that you have.
Thats a good analogy for what is going on. If the government finds out that I am involved in something from reading an email that I said the statements in, then shame on me.
