AFAIK anyway, the amount of magnetic force required to damage a hard drive is quite high. Saying this, I wouldn't test it unless you were using a PowerBook of some sort with its heavy metal on the outside. :)

I work from home all the time and have experienced the exact same issues. I tried a few things that did not work:
    - Buying a new computer
    - Changing my room on a weekly basis
    - Working outside (its the same as working inside in some aspects, and when its raining, you are working inside!)
    - Working in bed (seems to work reasonably well at 1-4am)

What I found did work is to get more work. I would work 5 days, then work 2 days a week somewhere completely different, in my case the Sydney Opera House. Yes, I get burnt out sometimes, but its working nicely thanks to flexible hours. I simply call up and the next day I am there working. Its great to just get away from it all, although the train trip back home is painful as you anticipate all the customers support issues.

Probably won't work too well in your case though, I just have lots of energy.

A few things I am going to try:
    - Go to the gym every morning before work
    - Remove distractions from my work area (slashdot, aim, msn, etc.) I find they make boredom easier to cope with but obviously, you don't get much work done. - Get my mates to randomly interrupt me on the weekend and go out for drinks
    - Get a girlfriend again :)

Then again, I only really date creative types so that does incline them to liking music a lot, so it does help in that department.

  11. Re:Anyone care to explain this one to me? on iTunes for Windows Reviews · · Score: 5, Informative

Sure. Shall we start from the top?

Forget the easy to use interface, its tiny footprint, the effortlessness in syncing it, its notes, calendars, games, contacts, etc. Lets focus on the big things.

Apple have designed it from the ground up based on the user rather than the techonology. Take the front panel buttons, they do not have moving parts. This is because a normal use will use it in environments that have dirt and other irritants.

The scroll wheel makes moving through menus so eas y it is not funny. It makes second nature in minutes and no other device, not a PC, nor a Mac nor even a microwave oven has anything like it in terms of perfect interfacing.

The sound outlet is put on the top...not the side. Most players I know have it wherever they feel like. The iPod is placed where you need it when it sits in your pocket (again, unlike most mp3 players).

This is a big deal to me...the scroll wheel when playing songs functions to skip through it, change the volume and change the rating. Everything so nicely placed and so perfectly executed.

Anyways, I am going to go to bed listening to these 5 new songs I downloaded and synced without a button click. Go grab your Wal-Mart mp3 player, but enjoy setting it up, and using it day to day. As for me, I will continue to buy and recommend the iPod to everyone I know. 7 other friends agree with me.

Of course Resident Evil 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, F-Zero, Zelda, Soul Calibur etc. are not for adults are they?

I know the gamecube has a reputation for being a kiddie system, but it simply is not the case. I can remember clearly at launch and for the several months afterward that there were no 'kiddie' games. In fact, a quick look at the PS2 lineup will find hundreds of kiddie games, many of them worthless.

If you still think its kiddie, go pick up Resident Evil 4 for GameCube (the new one coming out soon) and tell me you aint scared.

  13. Re:OS Bias on Apple Issues New G5 Benchmarks · · Score: 1

Actually, I think Windows has the bias here as it was designed from scratch for x86 hardware. Mac OS X on the other hand was not designed for PPC and in fact is hardly efficient on the PPC. If they were to make it more efficient, it would remove the ability for Apple to easily recompile and make minor changes to the kernel to allow it to run on other hardware.

Back home in Australia I used Optus cable on the 3gb home plan which was a nice fee to pay and bumped by internet to 28.8k once I passed the limit. I have now moved to Utah and am using Comcast. My experience with Optus was not perfect...but Comcast also has its disadvantages. Total throughput is lower (at 4am in the morning) but ping rates are much lower than in Australia to local servers. Comcast's price is also half as much as Optus and has no cap. Personally I am happy with Comcast's service here in comparison to Optus. In Australia we were sure being ripped off.
