  1. Re:hmmm on According To YouGov Poll, Snowden Support Declining Among Americans · · Score: 1

The US constitution and the system of government it created currently stand as the most enduring in history...

Really? What about, for example, the UK?

  2. Widscreen/Fullscreen Editions on Blu-ray Disc Among Top Selling DVDs at Amazon · · Score: 1

I'm from the UK and I was surprised to see that most films seem to be released on DVD in both widescreen and fullscreen versions in the US. This doesn't really happen in the UK.

Here almost all the films just come out in widescreen form and if you want to play on a 4:3 TV most DVD players give you the option of playing the DVD either in letter box or plan and scan. Is there a good reason for the difference?

It reminds of of a quote from Hitchhiker's Guide. The Golgafrinchans are trying to invent the wheel but have failed despite trying for years. After Ford Prefect tells them it is the single most simple invention ever thought up, the Golgafrinchan retorts:

"Alright, if you're so clever, what colour should it be?"

Magnetic fields also create waves, but the waves form a kind of bubble, which stops growing after four feet, making them more secure than waves wafting endlessly in every direction, Cui said.

I assumed that they would just be modulating the magnetic field with the signal rather than modulating a carrier signal with a high frequency.

The description above is nothing like I heard in physics at school but it may be that lower frequency signals have a shorter range.

I think it's safe to say it's yet another inaccuracy and in fact it emits less radiation than most other matter in the universe and hence is colder.

Because essentially as far as being a phone goes todays phones are no better then those that came out last year, or the year before, or the year before that. (Except perhaps being a bit smaller). In order for phone companies to make any money they need to make people who already have phones buy new ones and this is the only way they can think of.

  19. Linux too elite on Bad Review for the Zaurus · · Score: 1

Linux can definitely work on handhelds - in fact it would seem more suited to the task as it is much more customisable than Windows CE but doesn't have the software support behind it. I can't see M$ providing any support when a Linux handheld fails to synchronise with Outlook. Currently, as the article says, it's designed for geeks. The advantages of Linux will only be seen if it has the sort of software that can rival M$ in ease of use and compatibility. Until then it'll just be /.ers enjoying the novelty.
