Re: Crossballs: remember how there was that "gun nut" that got all upset?
Yeah, that would be me:). And yes, I'm the same guy suing Diebold so hey, I ain't JUST a gun nut:).
Anyways. They never ran my episode:). Swear to God - they pulled it at the last second. My lawyer's two letters about how they didn't have permission appear to have sunk in.
What a coincedence. You know that guy on the debates the other night? The really irritating one? That was me. And yes, I'm the same guy running to be president.
I'm doing pretty well over here. I've spent substantial amounts of time all over Europe (my dad's job made us move a lot) and after finally moving back to the states I have gotta say that I am doing much better here then any other country.
Sure congress passes a bunch of stupid ass laws, but what you need to look at is enforcement, rather then the text of the law itself. 5 years from we'll see how many people have been prosecuted under this law and then make judgements.
Btw, those of you who are saying "I'm glad I don't live anywhere near the USA" I have to ask, have you ever actually lived here? Every country has its underbelly which its not proud of, but given the choice (and the experience) I choose the United States hands down.
Some balance will have to be struck. If the UN actually enforced this (unlikely--has the UN enforced anything lately?), then that would be kiss of death for space development. Why run the risks if you had to give away all the proceeds?
The UN can't enforce anything. They are not a state, they have no method of enforcement. The best they can do is pass a resolution for member countries to attack. Anything else would be an infrindgement of US sovergntiy.
People talk about free will a lot and how it feels like they can make their own decisions and how can that be with what we know about physics. I think the first premise is wrong. It doesn't feel like we can make our own decisions. Its easy to tell this, just try to think of what it feels like to make a choice. You don't know do you? You can't even figure out when the choice is being made. After it happens you think you made a choice but at the time its just what you did. This is much closer to reality then the myth that we feel like we can make choices.
The points made by the parent, while offtopic, are still both interesting and fairly valid. While I do believe that a person has free will to a point, I think that the majority of actions a person takes are dictated by forces outside of their control and thus the person is not really free to choose one way or another.
We have the illusion of freedom, I sit here and say to myself, if i wanted to, I could get up and murder my roommate while he is sleeping. But do I really have that option? Besides what the law mandates, as a person, the experiences and the values I have been raised with take that option in reality out of my range of choices. If I were to attempt to murder my roommate, I would find myself (as most of the readers on slashdot would) unable to do so.
The same holds true with getting up and flashing an entire stadium of people your twig and berries. You may sit there and think to yourself "Yeah, i don't do that because I choose not to." But in reality, do you really have that choice? All of our choices are a product of who we are as a person. As that is a result of both the enviorment in which we were raised and genetics, neither of which we really had a choice in. While one could argue that it results in a limited version fo free will, its still not even that because the full range of choices which would be availale in any given situation are not an option for you.
Our choices are driven by our upbringing and after that what we do is very much a cause and effect situation. You may sit there after reading this and say to myself "He's full of shit, watch, I'll do this and it'll be random" But remember, it will be neither random, nor your choice because you are doing this merely in reaction to what you have read and your values have instilled in you the desire to protect your freedom of will.
I have seen this argument so many times on slashdot and I would really like to buy it (no pun intendid) but I have to say that logic and intuition says otherwise. I know that I used to buy CDs all the time. I have a collection of over 80 cds, accumulated over like a 3 year period. The last CD i bought was just after napster came out.
There may be some who are different but I no of no one who still buys CDs, hell, half my friends mock the idea of actually buying a CD. Anyone who says that the Kazaa hasn't hurt the music industry is either retarded or being very disingenious.
Have you actually used any of the file sharing services? The quality is very good most of the time and I am able to find virtually in song, regardless of how popular or unpopular it is.
You think money is a problem in politics now, just try getting rid of the electoral college and see what that gets you.
As it stands now most of the money spent in a campaign goes towards various ad buys in targeted areas. If you got rid of the electoral college, then as you said, every vote would count. Which means rather then targeting just the battle ground states they'd have to run the full 50 which will make it virtually impossible for a third party candiate to really compete on a national level.
In an ideal world I think a direct vote system would probably be a better option. However when you throw in the realities of the world in which we live, the electoral college is really the only answer.
Agreed...besides, much cheaper to buy an old house in the sticks and move into the septic tank- you already have running water...just add electric and your good to go
To get down you just have to get in the toliet and flush
Where does slashdot ever claim to be technology only? The slashdot tag is "news for nerds, stuff that matters." I would consider the election of the american president to fall solidly in the "stuff that matters" column.
And your still a fucking idiot.
Yes! Of course it would have you stupid paranoid fuck. This is a big issue regardless of party affiliation. After the beating the electoral college took in the last election and the claims of illegitamcey that haunted bush through his whole first term, if this actually happens and has a deciding factor on the election it will be of insane importance.
It will likely kill the electoral college, it will further decrease voting turnout and it will be a serious albatrose around the neck of the elected president.
What abut a garage sale?
But you always hear quotes similar to, "NASA went to the moon on the computing power comparable to a modern calculator" or something like that.
I'd like to see a modern ship guided by a TI-86. We'll call it the Retro-X Prize.
Be kind, at least give them a TI-89.

Maybe that's why Canada is so poor right now, they spend all their money on just printing the money (talk about a chicken and the egg scenerio).
yeah we'll toss you in an oven and roast your nuts like your grandfather when the nazi's beat his jew ass to death.
Can't we just agree that all mexican's should burn in the hell from which they were spawned?

How often do you here about people flying to Canada for medical treatment?

Online gambling is legal here in the UK, a member of the G8, and the fourth largest economy in the world
You seem a little insecure about your little island. It's okay...its cute even.
That's pretty odd, wouldn't you say Steve? But what the fuck is an ex-cd?
I would very much liek to agree with you, because it's a fun argument to make. Where are the stats on the subject?

The quality of journalism is intertwined with that of democracy? I guess we're pretty screwed then, huh?
Didn't we already read about this a couple of days ago?

But I've applied for a job down there (no reply so out for this year); anyone work down there and have any advice for getting a foot in the door?
First thing i would do is refrain from asking job advise on slashdot.
if i am not mistaken, maine is already set up in a proportional system and they havn't been sued.

You _are_ voting, aren't you?
no
That wasn't even me but I totaly agree with the sentiment.
