  1. Re:Yes, let the Mormons edit their DVDs on EFF Supporting Home DVD Editing · · Score: 4, Insightful

This should be protected by the first sale principle of the copyright law. I buy a video, I hire clean flicks to remove the stuff I don't want my kids to see. I keep the edited copy they make. The MPAA hates the first sale principle, but there would be no such things as public libraries, used book stores, or used CDs without it.

  3. Re:caffeine free coffee ? on Scientists Grow Decaffeinated Coffee Plants · · Score: 1

Arabica coffee has half thae caffeine of robusta coffee to start with, so if you drink gormet coffee, and not the stale, pre-ground shiat in a can, you already are much better off. Most people who get tense or get the shakes from drinking coffee are drinking the cheap stuff. You know what else? Arabica coffee is the original coffee plant. Robusta is a hybrid, designed to deliver higher yields, grown in a wider variety of climates, and be resistant to disease. Too bad it tastes like shiat, and is overloaded with caffeine. This could backfire on Marvel. It is like prosecuting fans who write fanfic for copyright violation. While they are creating derivative works without authorization, and copyright law bans this, they are usually doing no harm, and smacking them down will create a lot of enemies for the copyright holder. Enemies aren't customers.

Hollywood and the recording industry can produce crippled media, but we, the customers don't have to buy them. Let them gather dust, and they will die like Divx.(The crippled DVDs, not the current video format.)

If grousing informs people who didn't already know that this stuff exists before they waste their money, it serves a useful purpose.

  8. Could it be worse? on Bono (Not That Bono) Would Like To Head The RIAA · · Score: 4, Interesting
Mary Bono as head of the RIAA? Consider that she is the widow of Sonny Bono, who wanted to make copyright perpetual, after whom the Sonny Bono Copyright Extension act was posthumously named. She would likely go out of her way to kill off fair use and the public domain forever, the first sale principle is probably in her crosshairs too. Could there possibly be a worse person for the job? We could soon find ourselves missing Hilary Rosen. Boycott the recording industry. Don't buy CDs.
