  1. Re:HDMI vs DVI... on PlayStation 3 Unveiled · · Score: 0

HDMI is basically DVI that also carries audio.

If you use an HDMI->DVI adaptor, the signal will still be in high definition. That is, if your HDTV is HDCP compatible, (most HDTVs with DVI made within the past three or four years or so are). http://www.digitalconnection.com/FAQ/HDTV_12.asp for more information.

Now, using component cabling would be a different story. It's looking like the new generation of HD DVD players will down-res anything over component to 480p. That's what the upscaling DVD players currently do, (with the rare exception of some pre-firmware update players and smaller companies' offerings).

What is Tom Sawyer about, you ask? Well, basically, the book Tom Sawyer is about the olden days, back in the days of Huckleberry Finn. Back then, many people were so poor, they had no shoes and often wore only overalls with no shirt. The main character, whose name is Tom Sawyer, was so poor he had to paint something to earn money. Which is tough work, as I know, because I once had to paint a garage, and it took a long time. It's too bad times were so tough when the Sawyers were around, but it's important to keep in mind that this was the olden days. I would say things have certainly changed since the book took place, what with TV and movies and all. Things were simpler back then, for sure, but people like the ones in the book Tom Sawyer were pretty happy living the way they did. What's that? How would I respond to charges that Tom Sawyer is racist? Well, in the book Tom Sawyer, there is some of that, but we need to keep in mind as readers of today that that kind of thing is unacceptable. At the same time, though, that's how things were back then, so the book is also like a history book, if you think about it that way.

Neither of the parties is better than the other. This reminds me of one of the only intelligent comments to come out of Bill Maher's mouth... The future isn't what it used to be. Take Tomorrowland. When it opened in 1955 as one of the five original sections of Disneyland, Walt Disney himself appeared on the live opening-day telecast and promised "a step into the future with constructive predictions about things to come." He may have been a dull public speaker, but in envisioning "the world of 1987," as it was at one point conceived, he did offer up such astounding attractions as TWA's Rocket to the Moon and Monsanto's all-plastic House of the Future ("Hardly a natural material appears anywhere"). We now know that people still live in wood and brick houses; and that even if TWA did fly to the moon, no one would go because the service would be ghastly; and that if Disney could have given 1950s parkgoers a genuine look at the future, the most amazing thing about 1987 would have been the presidency of Ronald Reagan, ...

You know what the first thing that popped into my head after I read that quote?

  21. Re:Go for it! on Vivendi Offering MP3 Song for Sale · · Score: 0

One dollar is perfectly reasonable considering if you like an entire album you pay $13 to download it. If you only like 8 songs pay 8 dollars. The music industry needs a fair price to justify pushing people away from CDs that sold for 15 bucks.

This model will never come true. Think of cable television companies.. They don't sell on a "per channel" basis, although that would be much better for the customer. They include 60 garbage channels that nobody watches, simply to say that "Our deal is better than cable company Y. You get 25 more channels, and only pay $5/month more!" ~200 channels on cable/digital cable. ~$50/month. $.25 a channel, right? So, couldn't I just ask for ESPN, TLC, All the Discovery channels, and MTV2, and pay ~$5/a month? Doesn't work that way. The entertainment industry has to package the crap with the "good" stuff to give the impression of a good deal.

One more thing, I don't understand this "if you only like four songs off the album, you only have to buy four songs!" reasoning. Where do you hear the songs? The radio? The only "artist" I know that has four+ songs played on the radio off the current album is teeny shit like Creed and Britney Spears. I guess I don't understand how people could like a song without buying the album. A perfect example is The Verve and "Bittersweet Symphony." I liked that song. I bought "Urban Hymns." I listened to the ALBUM alot, and my britpop addiction was started. Now, "BS" is probably my 9th favorite song on that album.

Oftentimes, the best music on a CD are the songs that aren't radio friendly. The 8 minute song with no lyrics until the 4m mark for example.

I see this $1/song "service" only catering to the teenage audience with no music taste, (Isn't everything nowadays?).
