IMO, Ubuntu would have no traction (may not even exist) if RHL was still available. That's what I mean about screwing-up. Sure, RH is in the 'Enterprise' now along with vicious competitors such as Sun, IBM, MS, etc. Letting go of the grass roots Linux movement is where they screwed-up.
Red Hat drops their free version of Red Hat Linux. They had mind-share. They owned the grass roots Linux movement. They created a huge void.
Debian is plugging along quietly producing a great, but somewhat difficult to use (for newbies and non-unix geeks) distro. Ubuntu comes along, works closely with the Debian project to produce a polished version. Now, we're back to the good old days of Linux:)
Red Hat *really* screwed-up, but I'm glad that Debian and Ubuntu have filled the void as they'll never pull a stunt like RH did.
Wealthy people tend to save money. This may be difficult for non-wealthy people to realize, but it's true. The average millionaire in the US drives a 10 year old car... didn't we just read about the Head of Ikea driving a 14 year old Volvo? If you want to be wealthy, you budget, plan and spend accordingly, you don't rush out and buy trinkets whenever a whim strikes you and you don't get a new car lease (fleece) every couple of years.
The sun is going to burn out in a few billion years. As it does so, it will cool
and expand slowly enveloping the earth. The 'global warming' we are experiencing
today will be nothing in comparison. The earth will be cooked until it is very
well done and once that's over and the sun is completely burned-out, the earth
will be frozen solid.
The moral of this story is this: the earth will heat up
and cool down based on what the sun is doing. It's pretentious and incorrect to
think that something as insignificant as mankind is the main cause of global
warming.
I would try to break the task down into smaller tasks so each of you can contribute. For example... have you partner write code that interacts with the DB while you write code to manipulate that data once *he* has retrieved it. While you are working with the data, have your partner write something that will address data presentation, report generation, stats, etc.
Just break things down into smaller things and you'll both do fine:)
Ruby is a wonderful language that is very flexible. I came to it from Python. I enjoy using both languages, but Ruby has replaced Python as my 'home' language. I don't do web devel.... there's much more to Ruby than Rails:) Ruby is an excellent Windows or Unix sys admin language or a great general purpose programming language or a scientfic/computational language as well. Rails simply demonstrates Ruby's power and flexibility.
This happened in 1971. The US did away with the Gold Reserve. Cash was backed by gold up until that time. After that, cash became a 'currency'. Which basically means it's not backed by anything and that the Federal Reserve can print as much as it wants to. Currencies have no inherent value and decrease in value over time. For example, if you bury 40 bucks in your backyard and dig it up 50 years from now, you'll find that it'll buy much less than it did when you buried it. On the other hand, if you bury 40 bucks worth of gold, silver or copper, etc. you'll find that it has gone up (a lot) in value. Cash is basically wothless. It's just paper. Get rid of it. Buy stuff that goes up in value... something cash cannot do:)
No messages have been posted to the botlist yet. I subscribed and thought I'd check out the archive... it's empty. Seems like they'd advertise lists that were up and running with content, not lists w/o any. Perhaps it was setup by bot masters so they'd know who to pick-off?
The suns gonna burn out in 4 to 5 billion years so unless a bunch of egg heads get together and figure out how we can get off of this rock onto another suitable rock in a resonable amount of time, it doesn't really matter whether this thing hits us or not. Always look on the bright side kids:)
Bill Gates on the stand: "Well, you see, it went like this your honor, App..."
Steve Jobs yelling from the courtroom: "Shutup! Shutup now Bill!!!"
Judge banging gavel: "Order [bang, bang, bang] There'll be order in the court room!"
RMS standing and asking for calm: "Judge. Notice that I did not call you 'Your Honor' as I do not honor the authority that you claim to hold. I will not place my hand on a Bible and swear to tell the truth. The Bible is a book of fairy tales and fables for which I hold no respect..."
Steve Ballmer jumps to his feet and grabs a chair: "Jesus H. Christ [Throws a chair at RMS] This guy is a fuckin' loon... how the fuck did he get in here?"
'Python' was named after the Monty Python show because it's supposed to be fun. And it is fun... much fun indeed... practical and productive too... who would of thought one could have fun programming _and_ get stuff done too:)
People only have so much cash. If everyone starts charging a dollar for every word, sound byte, picture, video clip then people won't participate. 7 bucks doesn't sound like much, but if in the past I got 20 podcasts for free and now they all cost 7 bucks I'll stop doing podcasts. So go ahead 'content providers' shoot yourself in the foot, I'll find free content elsewhere.
It's a red herring... they're trying to keep us from noticing the satellites going the other way (against the rotation of the earth)... they're up there, you just don't expect them to be going backwards. So when someone sees one, they think it was a fluke.
"Hey, Bob, did you see that? It looked like a satellite going the wrong way. Have you been drinking hard cider again Henry? You know they always travel over the shed in the backyard toward the school house... that's the only way they can go! I've been drinking beer and tracking these things for damn near 20 years and I ain't once seen one come from that direction..."
I can't wait until one of these is widespread AND badly written. Once several thousand computers stop booting and are potential ruined (umm... you need a new motherboard... this is not covered under warranty). God help whoever wrote and distributed it. He will hang.
Yes, in general, any BIOS can be password protected. On newer Dell systems their flashBIOS utility (which runs from the OS) stops and prompts for a password during the flash process.
I once showed a script I wrote to a guy who heads IT security in our company. A few months later in a company newsletter he mentioned the script, how it had helped find and resolve a serious security falw and how he had submitted it to a 3rd party security organization for review. He took full credit for everything and ended up getting an interview with SANS. Granted, the guy is higher up the corporate ladder than me, but he's not my boss and my name was never mentioned as being the autor of the script. For me, this was a lesson learned.
I'll never show this dude a script again! Now, I understand how he got to where he is... making friends with smart people and using their work to gain a reputation that he does not deserve.
...and there's no real equivalent on it to VB scripting.
Python is very much like VB on Windows and on Mac. It's installed by default on OSX. Don't kid yourself. Python could be used to scritp a devestating virus on Mac OSX.
Apple is like the housing market. Just because their stock is 50% OVER-VALUED does not mean they are actually worth that much money... it's all on paper. And when a price correction occurs (and it will, it always does), you'll see how much they are actually worth.
We'll have to agree to disagree.

Saving up for a digital whiteboard. Right.

Yeah, for sure... this was written in Ruby. It's a stand-alone win32 executable for hashing files, strings, etc...
I would suggest 'Programming Ruby'. The first edition can be read online here: http://www.rubycentral.com/book/

Ruby will be around for a long time.

Just curious... what did he write it in? PHP, Ruby, Python, etc.?
As soon as Google gives me all of their data, I'll give them mine.

I meant that as a joke. I like quick and easy too :)
At last... the blackmagic and ignorance that abounds in Windows has found its way into Linux :)
