  1. Spin on Research: File Traders And Music Purchasing · · Score: 2, Insightful

22% of Americans 12-44 years old agree with the statement "You no longer have to buy CDs, as you can download the music for free from the Internet."

The RIAA will interpret this as 1/5 of the population of America will never buy CDs and they're losing out. HOWEVER, this could simply be the large (and growing) faction of Americans who are discovering independant artists via the net and downloading music free legally. They then support the artist through T-shirts and concerts.

  2. Subscription on Interview with MusicNet Chief · · Score: 3, Insightful

How many subscribers do you hope to have in a year?
I don't give out subscription numbers.

Translation: We don't have that many. It's embarassing.

  3. Distance on Sili-Hudson Valley? · · Score: 1

Perhaps they like the location *because* it's 100 miles away from the nearest constituant. Not only is it deemed "neutral" by all companies, but people from those companies can visit the center, then relax in albany, citing travel time and other factors for them not being able to return to work.

  4. 17 years... on Seventeen Years of Tetris · · Score: 4, Funny

17 years of Tetris, 17 years of those damn little Z shaped ones coming at the exact wrong time.

  6. Watch the videos here. on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 3, Informative

Here, you can watch them online... (QT format, sorry Taco, I think they ARE worth it tho')

The video for Windowlicker, a commentary on rap videos that times in at 11 minutes

The video for Come to Daddy, perhaps the finest music video ever. It has a deep meaning to it too, about the media

Boy, that site is gonna go down quickly. They're worth it tho'. (and legal, I believe)

  7. another recommendation on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 1

Anything by the Ministry of Sound, particularly in the "Clubbers guide to" or the "Ibiza" series. It's from england, so you can find it mostly in the import section.

Believe me... it's worth it. "Clubber's Guide to Trance" is incredible.

  8. Two Words on Electronic Music 101? · · Score: 4, Informative

  9. Re:Grand Theft Auto III on Slashback: Stapler, Interface, Gaming · · Score: 1

sometimes we need to curb our liberties to guard our safety.

Those who will give up a little bit of liberty for a little bit of safety deserve neither liberty nor safety- Benjamin Franklin.

Give me Liberty- the first misson of GTA3.

That Nightline was very slanted. They don't show the part where you fight to try to cripple drug traffickers. They don't show the part where the cops (almost) always arrest you for the crimes you commit. There have been NO reported incidents of crime related to the original GTA and GTA 2. Guess how many GTA III has caused? Zero. Why?

Perhaps it's the fact that most people can tell the difference between a videogame and real life. Walk up to a car and open the door and throw the person out. Go ahead. In GTA III it happens fluidly, however in real life, the doors may be locked, the person may be wearing a seatbelt, and they might punch you in the face and shoot you.

Video games create an escape, they allow people to release their stress in a way that nobody gets hurt. They are also a scapegoat for bad parenting. Do you really think that the Columbine shooters decided to shoot people at their school because they played doom?

"Wow! This game is great! You get to kill Monsters!"
"Wow! That is great! Let's kill people at our school!"

NOBODY has ever killed somebody else because of a video game. There's many other factors. Depression, social ills, neglect all cause a person to "Flip out" and kill somebody else more than any video game.

  10. Well.. one on Easter Eggs in Web Sites? · · Score: 1

  11. Finally... on Public Software Fund's First Project · · Score: 2, Insightful

The perfect chance for P2P to redeem itself from being label as illegal activity only. Unfortunately, it won't appeal to 90% of users, so it won't. The idea is still nice.

  12. Open source photos? on Quirky Open Source Convention Photos · · Score: 0

    From the site:
If you're not the person in the photograph and you want to use the photograph on your non-commercial website, then send me an email and let me know how you would like to use the photograph. I'll email you back and let you know what I think.

The convention may be open source, but the photos sure aren't.

  13. Why? on Spielberg Denied Crack at Star Wars · · Score: 2, Insightful

We all know Lucas's biggest motivation is money, lots and lots of it. Doesn't he remember a little franchise known as Indiana Jones? Lucas and Spielberg teamed up on that and look, nerds and non-nerds love it. You can't find a person who doesn't like Indy. Anybody who has ever worn a fedora gets references to the movies all day long. This is a bad move by Lucas, he could've included all the merchandising he wanted (More aliens, more Fetts, etc.) and he could've made a wildly popular movie too.

Too bad he's too ego-centric to let go. Ego over money, I guess.

  14. The Flashes... on A Quick Peek From the Matrix Set In Sydney · · Score: 3, Funny

I don't think a lot of you are understanding why the flashes pissed of the director.

Yes, a camera flash at that distance won't illuminate a hellicopter. That's good for side views or shots shot angling up at the hellicopter shot from below (probably a 45 degree angle)

However, if the director wanted an overhead shot, or one angling down at the hellicopter, the street would be visible and that's where the flashes would be seen. The director probably wanted to see an average street so the distracting flashes were causing him lost time, film and money.

  15. Re:Camera flashes on A Quick Peek From the Matrix Set In Sydney · · Score: 1

Oooooooh, it makes me giggle when those silly little automatic cameras go all flashy at night. A tiny little camera with a tiny flash isn't going to illuminate a large helicopter at a range of 20m.

No, but when the camera shows the helicopter in relation to the ground, they want to see a regular city street, not a city street with dozens of camera flashes.

  16. Cameras on A Quick Peek From the Matrix Set In Sydney · · Score: 0, Interesting

At about 5pm when it got dark the camera flashes started going off, this pissed off the director as it was interfering with his film.

Too bad the Matrix isn't set in Japan, where tons of people carry cameras all the time. Then the people could take all the pictures they wanted to, and it'd be ok.

  17. Realism? on A Quick Peek From the Matrix Set In Sydney · · Score: 4, Funny

At about 5pm when it got dark the camera flashes started going off, this pissed off the director as it was interfering with his film.

Y'know, if I'm on the street and a helicopter goes flying by with people fighting on it, I'm going to take a picture.

  20. Use black paper on Anti-Spammers Wage E-War · · Score: 1

If your spammer target is in the same city or you're using a company fax, then take some black paper, about three or four sheets... Tape them together and dialup the spammer's fax. Start sending the fax.. when the first page comes through, curve it up and tape it to the end of your paper trail. This will create a loop. Then LEAVE!

This is best to do in the night, so when the spammer returns in the morning, they have no more paper and more more ink.

I guess the marketing model of making your ads get bigger and bigger and crowd your stories and then forcing users to switch to having to have a premium service to get acess to all the content just doesn't work.
