  1. Damn on Doom 3 Vaporware no More · · Score: 1

If this sort of thing qualifies as a news story on slashdot I should've sent it in. The preorders have been up on Best Buy's site for almost a month now, I thought it was common knowledge Doom 3 was coming out soon, guess it just got overshadowed by Half-Life 2 and all of it's mishaps. Personally, I'm much more excited to see and play Doom 3 than HL2 the only reason HL1 was any good was the mods so I'll just have to wait a year till HL2 is any good to me.

I almost pity all the people who in a rush to beat the curve and be "cool" bought those 4 or 5 thousand dollar Plasma tvs when if they could've practiced a small degree of self discipline and waited another year and a half could've saved almost 4 grand.

I was in the market for a portable computer for school about a month ago. I ended up settling on the closeout Compaq 2ghz celeron notebook (it was only 700 bucks). I was willing to spend up to around a thousand and would have REALLY like the digital paper functionality of a tablet (prerparing for M$ bashing) and for the new OneNote in Office 2K3. I looked at this program in the beta and it seemed like exactly what I was looking for to be able to get rid off all of my handouts (most of my proffesors create PDFs to hand out and you can simply import them digitally) and to combine ALL of my note taking. The thing is the program loses almost all of it's creative functionality on a laptop, it was really designed for a tablet. Considering I wanted to be able to play a few games and run other software on the computer a 1ghz PIII mobile vs a 2ghz celeron at a 5-800 dollar price savings seemed a no brainer. They need to come down in price and up in system performance before they'll take off. Otherwise they'll just go the way of the mini-disk.

What I quicly discovered is that all of the smaller more fuel efficient vehicles don't have room for me. I'm 6'3" and not skinny when I sat in an Accent/Prius/Civic/Prizm/etc... I simply don't have leg room, especially not for a stick shift. I would like to see a roomier hybrid/low mpg vehicle come out. I think what i'm leaning towards is a 5-speed gas powered jetta (for cost reasons the TDI is too much and too unavailable used). Yet even this is almost too small for me, what I would like is an impala/taurus sized car that could get me 30-35 mpg city. Sadly nothing seems to even come close to this.

  21. Re:not that I like it... on University Textbook Exchange Software · · Score: 1

I attend another UW system school (Parkside) and here we have a Follet book store. The store is completely independent of the school and is only there as a lessee of space because the provide the service of selling/buying books from students for free to the school, in exchange for store space. I've also found that Follet is by far the most expensive retailer and online re/seller of textbooks. Unfortunatley several of my classes books seem to only be availabe through Follet (my math books ISBN isn't even listed w/ amazon). Until now this hasn't bothered me so much but my textbook costs this semester almost reached 600 dollars, ans that's almost a third of my actual tuition costs (credit/hrs only). I know that several other UW schools (Whitewater) have implemented book rental programs much like in primary and secondary education in the U.S. offers. There really does need to be a more standardized online method for exchanging/personally selling your books. Half.Com seems to be the closest to accomplishing this but their system is clunky and not very intelligible at times as far as what exactly it is you're buying and from whom. Sorry for the rant but i'm just really pissed about the cost of my textbooks this semester.

  22. It's inevitable on Will Humanoid Robots Take All the Jobs by 2050? · · Score: 1

People are seem terrified of the thought that computers are going to replace humans at the menial ,repetitive, go nowhere jobs. This is in actuality a GOOD thing and it IS going to happen. Computers continue to increase in processing power exponentially and eventually they'll be able to do anything a human can do. So at that point we can use our brains for creating and learning instead of asking if you'd like to try the new grilled stuffed chicken burrito. When McDonald's is automated there'll be jobs in engineering and maintenance for all of the machines there. Meaning the 40 year old living in his parent's basement is either A) out of a job or B) going to have to school, earn more money when he's done and be able to CONTRIBUTE something to society. The jobs these machines are poised to replace aren't the important ones rather the place holder jobs. Maybe this will make the USA realize we need to invest in schooling and post-secondary education rather than pushing kids through the school system as quickly as possible.

Sadly as much as a despise our "elected" president the economy isn't truly his fault, it was sliding before he took office and is now simply taking the blame for that.

HOWEVER, he is to blame for getting us involved in a war for oil (which his family's fortune is based on) to ATTEMPT to help the economy and raise his popularity. I think it's sad that he would do something like this to take the attention off the economy but it's been done throughout the history of our country, and for those who actually think that this war is to "help" the people of Iraq. I'd like to point out a little incident in Cambodia where a little known dictator killed nearly 7 million of his own people and was hardly noticed until it was far too late. Why was there no major intrusion to stop these atrocities? Cambodia isn't bordering any allies of ours who would benefit from kicking him out, and there was no MONEY to be gained. This war is about saving face and making gas cheaper.

I don't want to sound antipatriotic, I love my country and on occasion I think we even do a few right things in the global society. But it's getting downright scary to think that we can exert this much force anywhere on the globe and have little worry of political retribution from a foreign power, and that this power is threatening our own freedoms. Every year countless laws are added to the books across the country and yet almost none are repealed. We're slowly putting ourselves into a police state. Much of what the government is now trying to regulate and patrol (information/communication) in the interests of "SECURITY" is only going to put the public in a position of fear of even discussing disentous remarks. It scares me that I see these things happening and yet there's little to be done about it because voters are entirely too apathetic to actually look at the issues and get out and fix these problems.

In short GO AMERICA, get rid of the government
