I am a professional Java and web (javascript, xslt, CSS) programmer and full time student finishing my BS in Computer Science and a minor in math. I manage my parents Red Hat 7 server/router, and help our sometimes with my company's Red Hat and Debian Servers.
I love linux, but I'm not into spending time tweaking it. I don't play games, or have massive hardware needs. I simply need a stable system that can keep a lot of windows open, I can configure the way I like, and has a powerful shell that I can get around. I'll poke around configuration files to get my winmodem working, but then I'll go to kppp to set up the actual connection. But normally, I set something up that I want to work without having to read a 10 chapter "howto". I bought a used HP laserjet 6 printer so that I won't have to worry about drivers and print head alignment.
I don't like the Windows Registry but I can deal with it, but I much prefer the/etc folder. Webmin is my conrol panel. I don't like The way "Document's And Settings" is structured or the fact that it warns you a million times just because you want to look at a "protected" folder, and I DO like the way/home is structured. I like apple, but can't afford it so I have a PC with Mandrake.
What I am trying to say is that these applications that can be "themed" could support a special theme that allows them to handle this meta-toolkit. Maybe it should be called a meta theme-kit. Why not a theme that can, itself, be themed. We could have a gnome theme called metatheme, and a kde theme called metatheme, and then using a special theme control panel change all QT and GTK applications in one shot. That's not to far from what's already been done. Actually, it seems like the next logical step.
Perhaps the solution is a meta-toolkit. That is, a toolkit that does nothing other than, at compile time, bind the program to a particular toolkit, I guess, similar to wxwindows. If everybody used this toolkit to write their applications, then the applications could be compiled for QT, GTK, Windows, OSX etc. The problem is that this is the easy part. What about bonobo and placement of the buttons (Does OK go left or right of cancel). The common message boxes could handle that for us, but what about custom windows?
The major problem we see here is the definition of occupation. What is an occupation. How long must you occupy before it's not longer an occupation. Israel is occupying Palestine? Perhaps. Most would agree that the US is occupying Iraq, but most would argue that the US is not occupying California, which was stolen from Mexico a little over a hundred years ago. So, 1 year=occupation. 150 years=ownership What's 50 years? Maybe this'll all be over in another 100 years? Probably not.
Maybe in 150 years, Mandrake will still occupy the Israeli desktop.
I am happy Mandrake is being used globally. It's only good for my favorite Distribution.
This is commonly asked around the internet. The only way to answer this question, though, is to know WHY you are upgrading her. If you just want to upgrade her for the fun of it, then DON'T. She's probably happy with what she has, knows where everything is, and likes that it "just works" for her by now. Switching her to linux without trying to solve a problem will only make her not like what you did, if she notices the difference at all.
That aside. Assuming SHE wants to switch to Linux (any Linux) then I prefer Mandrake simply because it's one of the most widely used distributions out there. While not a monopoly by any means, it's so well supported by a relatively kind community that's willing to help. Most of the features listed for xandros exist in Mandrake. It takes a few more than 4 clicks to install, cd's can be burned from konqueror by right clicking on any folder one wishes to burn, windows programs run under any Linux if you purchase Crossover from mandrake club, file sharing in konqueror is accomplished by righ-clicking and choosing "share", (after turning sharing on from the right click-properties menu), and mandrake club has a large selection of files.
No evidence to date has been submitted by ANY organisation which shows any involvement whatsoever by Bin Laden and Al Qaeda. According to all intelligence sources (except North America) that I have heard speaking about 9/11, they all insist no terrorist organisation is capable of carrying out a sophisticated attack of this nature, and it could ONLY have been done by high level officials within the US government itself! So the question is, why is nobody investigating the probability that elements within the US government did these acts?
You're kidding right. I have doubts. I have questions. But, I know everybody in this message board has heard of and probably read the jolly roger and "The Cookbook". Now tell me, how hard is making a bomb? How hard is hijacking a plane with no guards and no guns. Before 9-11, the hijacker wanted something other than to make the plane into a bomb, so everybody did what the jijacker wanted. It only took long enough for the passengers on the fourth plane to find out what was going on for that to all change.
How did Israel get in there? And what does his training have to do with anything? When he was trained, we had no idea how horrible terrorism could be. All the US knew was: Communism==bad Democracy==good (bin Laden == Communist) == false Single man with money and some bombs < Communist Russia, with more money and nukes
Everyone in the US ass-umed that we could handle bin laden if he got out of control. Oops. It's not like the US is still supporting him.
On a side note, and completely unrelated to bin laden (Although all of our politicians would have us believe otherwise) we captured a major human rights violator who was not obeying a piece of paper that was preventing us from doing this in the 90s. He got screwed because the US suddenly became very anti-terrorist, which is contrary to the viewpoints of many people in that region. So we started cleaning that area with the one who deserved it most.
Finally, since Iraq seems to be a large old storage field, and the US executive branch has many x-oil men, we may never know how much of a role oil played in the whole ordeal. ANYTHING other than fact is conspiracy theories, no matter how possible they are.
Actually, if I own the CD, I can make a copy of my friends CD if mine breaks because I have already purchased the right to own the CD. This is why you see the disclaimer on all of the MAME ROM sites about needing to own the game if you want to download the ROM. If I don't own the CD, then you are correct, I cannot copy the CD. And in Canada, you cannot make a copy of your friends CD if you don't already own it either. Even though you pay a pirate tax on the blank media, piracy is still against the law in both countries. So, under the same circumstances....
1. Person A purchases CD. 2. Person A breaks CD. 3. Person A copies said CD from person B. 4. Given blank CD have the same price in Canada and US.
If person A buys the CD in Canada, there is added tax on the blank media. So, even though no laws were broken in either country, the Canadian person A has paid a piracy tax and is out that much more money than the USA person A.
Under fair use, it's perfectly legal to make a backup. The difference here is that in Canada, you'll now have to pay a tax on the backup media because they ASSUME you are a pirate. We have no such tax in the US.
I really like it better in the US. We know that if we get cought we get sued. We know that if we don't get cought we don't get sued. And we know that IF WE DON'T BREAK THE LAW, WE DON'T PAY FOR THOSE THAT DO. Contrast that to Australia where you can't make a backup without violating the law, or Canada where everybody pays for those that break the law, and I don't feel so bad about even the DMCA.
If this is the same levy as before, it only applies to _blank_ media. That is, media without any sounds on it. So the iPod in Canada could just come with a copy of "Steve Jobs Sings" prerecorded, and no levy.
True, but if you compare that to the time it might take to fix the problem another way, then upgrading might be the cheapest route. Remember, I said the "easiest" that also means "the fastest".
Furthermore, now that we're completely off topic and talking about non-linux users, I use mandrake. I added plf and textar to my urpmi database.. I am completely confident that when I install a package, it won't break my system and it will work without the upgrade. I've been happily using mandrake 9.0 on this computer for some time, and I still use mozilla 1.5. Textar and plf will support the packages I want that Mandrake doesn't want to supply. That's the "Strength of OSS". I know that if Mandrake were to shift its support position to "corporate only" and drop the free urpmi access, textar and plf would pick up the slack and give me my security patches.
Apples to oranges. If it were expensive to upgrade, then people would be giving out different advice. What you are seeing is the easiest solution to the problem. If windows were free, you'd see the messages like "just upgrade to XP and that problem goes away" messages too.
This adobe help article actually adivses people to DOWNGRADE to fix a problem.
That's very true. Some merch companies will give hundreds of thousands of dollars up front and then RAPE artists. But, it's the artists choice to sign such contracts, and they are betting that they will be one-hit wonders unless they get that cash fast. My company only operates inside short term contracts and is NEVER purposly late. On rare occasions that it happens, we do something to say sorry, like running a promotion at our expense. Please understand that, unlike the RIAA, the merchandising industry is highly competitive and without monopoly or lobby. Supply and demand dictate it's behavior. The consumers and artists win.
Instead of backspace, you can try "b" for back a message. It works for me.
The spam filter only works well when you mark a ton of messages as "spam" and a ton of messages as "not spam". Marking the "not spam" messages is more important than marking the "spam" messages because it avoids false positives. Try going into a large folder that has no spam in it, selectng all of the messages and marking them as not spam.... BAM instand 99% correct filtering with NO false positives.

I work for a band merchandising company, and I can tell you that if you really want to give the band something for their work, buy their OFFICIAL merchandise. The merchandise linked to from their OFFICIAL web site. They get as much as 50% of the price you see on the screen, even if the merch company designed the logos and bought the materal to create it.
I am that target audience.

It didn't tarnish the MS name, now did it? (I know, it's just a joke, mod me down though. They spend way more time getting sued that suing anyways).
