I don't care what interface you got for your but spending $2000 will not get you a good sound. My recording chain, which gets a pretty good sound (not the sound I would like to be getting) is as follows (watch the prices)
Neuman M147 or Blue Bottle (from $500 for the Bottle, to over $1200 I think for the Neuman)
Monster Cable - another $100 or so for the XLR cable
Avalon 2022 Preamp - $2000
1176 Compressor (real deal, no plugs)- $1500
Amek designed Tac Scorpion - used to be about $15000, got mine for $2000
Apogee AD16 convertors- $2000
Protools System- at least another $6000 with computer for a decent mix system
Genelec Monitors- $3000 for a pair
Ok, that doesn't even start into what I should have to be recording at the level I want to. A decent studio needs to have alot more that just a computer. Even if you want to mix in the box without a control surface, you need killer mics, preamps and convertors. Then you can't hardly even get a linear phase EQ without getting a Weiss. Don't give me that crap that $2000 will do it all. Just your convertors should cost that if you are putting your all into it. And no, the convertors built into your soundcard don't sound good (and these apogees aren't the best either... need an AD8000 or something better)
You still need a great sounding room too, I would say a TDM system... sure that's kinda a thing of the past, but the new HD Accell systems are a HELL of alot more reliable than the host based systems. Sure you are paying a preminum for using Protools, but do I care? I can go into any studio with my firewire or SCSI drives, and know that my sessions will load perfectly. If I had an SSL, i could carry around my mixes too. It's no big deal. And, the 'modeling' stuff isn't there yet, and I can't see it being there for a while.
A few years ago, my Compaq 300mhz bit the dust (or rather the cheap assed motherboard did due to crappy capcitors). I went to get a new mobo, and other parts. I got a mobo that supported dual Ghz processors, RAID, SCSI onboard, and was made by Supermicro (P6DGU). Great board, but i've been pained to get rid of it. I eventually put one 850mhz PIII in it, but since it uses slot 1 chips, the prices never really dropped on the second chip. The main software I use is Protools, which only recently supported dual WinXp Pro (I got the mobo before I got protools), but doesn't support dual processors, it just won't work if you have a dual system. So i've never been able to upgrade to dual processors. I paid over 400 USD for the mobo, and 130 for a monster ATX case from supermicro, because i wanted space to expand.
The point? I know how it feels to want to upgrade instead of buy a new one. I decieded against upgrading, when I realized that I could buy a new 3ghz system at walmart, for rather little and two 1ghz chips wouldn't give me the same speed. The 80mb SCSI that my system supported looks childish now in some ways, and why would I spend 4x as much for SCSI drives to match it (and get multiple of them for RAID) vs getting the fastest IDE drives, and an IDE raid card? So I got a new G4 (which I thought might have been a bad idea since the new G5s are coming out, but it turns out they don't support the Digi 001 card due to a voltage issue on the mobo), and thought to turn the old system into just a linux box. Well I can't really justify pulling it out and spending much money on it, when my mac does pretty much everything I need. I even have an HP laptop here that I haven't turned on since I got my mac except to use Excel once. Perhaps i'll get a few 9gb SCSI drives and new processors for my PC and make it a rendering station for Maya or something, but who knows. It's almost cheaper to get solid state memory now then get a few scsi drives...
What happens if i get my powerbook too cold? Can I sit outside on a chilly winter day (that's not snowing) out on the Charles River (Boston), without destroying it? Another question... I notice the humidity on the weather channel is often 100% when it's raining. If I have my windows open, would i be unable to run my mac since the humidity would be 100%?
Oh, and i can't really take my power book if i go into space... or even just climb mount everest?.... damn, that sucks...
Ok, so I have two ideas here. One i think someone has already implemented.
I'm first thinking that balloons could be a really easy way to get a wireless network to cover a large area. A stripped down wireless unit, a super light battery ( or solar/wind power source), and a really large balloon. Put a few of these up on long strings, and i could cover cambridge or back bay (Boston) pretty quickly I would think.
Ok, second idea. What about some wireless hookup for the digital camera, so that you could put a camera up there, and not take it down often, but control the camera (zoom?) - or at least take the pictures, and then transfer them to the ground. I would think that this could really rock. Get 4-8 of those party balloons (at what point is this a 'weather balloon' and are there any laws about these?), so you could pick up 2-4 lbs, then, mount the stuff on a little box. Put a few strings on it, and let it fly. Snap snap snap, download the camera, zoom in, etc...
Since www.k_lite.tk_Kazaa_Lite@Kazaa is listed, is anyone that used Kazaa Lite gonna get sued? Or is it the company KazaaLite that they are going after? I'm pretty sure that they ruled that since the filesharing services could be used for other things, they can't really go after KazaaLite... but what about the users?
Are there (accurate) logs of everyone who has ever used KazzaLite? Should we worry?
This happened with MUDs, The Realm, UO, EQ, and is still happening today. It's nothing new. Perhaps if there was some way that players (of higher levels???) could reward roleplaying, and make it an important part of the game. Even automatic filters/penalities for using leet speak? Use something akin to the grammar checking programs in various work processors to figure out your 'roleplaying level'? At one point I would have said GMs could help in these efforts, but there are too few of them, and they are always just fixing problems in the games for the most part.
The Best solution would be if quests required some degree of roleplaying (thus actually making it a roleplaying game), instead of just having to kill something, find something, or deliver something.

Damn. I live in Boston off of $818/month. It sucks since my apartment is 700/month. Now I am living off of student loans. Where the hell in Boston were you living (Beacon Hill?) that you couldn't live on 1600/month well???
Dvorak, of PC Magazine fame, had a conspiratorial article once about the threat that this presents in that information on how to reset the microcode in the hands of a virus writer could be devastating (and achieve the holy pinnacle of computer vandals of actually damaging hardware, and least perceptably).
Perhaps I shouldn't say this.... because perhaps I am unleashing some evil from my mind on the world that should never be unleashed...
Ah, what the hell, let's open pandora's box!!!
What if you wrote a virus that simply overclocked some part on the computer? If the processor was software overclockable (I don't overclock much so I don't know...) you could perhaps have a virus that would simply change the clock multiplier from say... 6x to perhaps 10x. That would fry the chip? I don't know much about CPU overclocking, but I know that video overclocking is easily done. Alot of people use either Nvidia or ATI cards, and i know the Nvidia cards share the detonator driver set (on windows), not sure about ATI. What if you had something that just forced the card to it's Max??? And if you have a program that controls fans... turn them off? Just have the virus try for ATI cards, Nvidia cards, and susecptable CPUs, and mobo's with controlable fans- then send them through the roof. Sure your computer would run faster for a few seconds... but i remember a Tom's Hardware where they took the fan off an Athalon, and it burst into flames...
We are both students in Boston, so our expenses are quite high. Here's my budget and her's.

I don't really want to take out loans to pay for Rent- because it's so damn expensive anyway. My apartment's total is $1400 for a really crappy 2BR/1Bath in Brighton, MA. I split it with a crazy guy. I'm moving in with her as soon as my lease is up. I want to sublet, but my landlord wants my security deposit for it- and i don't want to just throw that away for him to do paperwork. I normally end up getting about an extra 100 a month from my parents if they can spare it.
She's decieded to scrap her phoneline and use her cell, and get Cable internet access.

I know that the Digi001 runs on 400mhz+ machines. I am running it on an 850mhz PIII, 256mb memory, etc. The Digi002 may have steeper requirements, and yea, a 2ghz machine would rock protools. It's actually more like a 400 dollar machine if you have some CD drives, cases, etc.
I am going to get a G4 Tower, dual 1.25 or 1.42ghz with 1gb memory however. I just see that Macs are the way to go for this kinda thing. I've used a 933mhz single processor one for TDM and LE protools at a friend's house, and his holds up MUCH better than mine. I am also looking forward to using MAX/MSP with protools, and Logic 6. Softsynths are also supported well on mac, and many plugins are on Mac that aren't on PC. Overall, the Mac is just the better choice for me. Also, since Protools on Intel is Windows XP only- I can't really run linux without dual booting. I am really looking forward to running protools on a BSD machine (Mac)
Seriously, i think he's right. I've used macs and PCs for audio, and the macs are far less fussy. For one thing that company knows the hardware with a mac (for protools this is a big deal) and can work out the bugs. On PC it's all over the map.

The math whiz who solves the Riemann hypothesis problem stands to not only earn a million dollars and global acclaim, but also to stand the information security industry on its ear
I disagree. For one thing, there's alot more at Berklee than just playing music. There's Music Therapy, Music Business, Music Synthesis, Music Educaction, Music Production and Engineering, etc... Those are things that you definately need to be schooled in before you do them. Do you want people teaching music who have no idea what they are doing? Do you want people being your Manager if they don't know anything about contracts? Perhaps you like lawyers that got their bar license from a TV ad.
Berklee doesn't suck the life outta music. People who aren't musicians don't really understand all that goes into it. For a second I will assume that you have played an instrument at some point. Ok, so you have 'talent' or you have the 'feeling'. Now can you write horn charts? No? Can you write music properly? Can you transcribe music after only hearing it once or twice? Do you know what chords would sound like before you play them, or do you have to use trial and error?
I agree, that hard conditions make better lyric writers. There's alot of 'art' to it, but you have to know what you are doing too. There's a TON of people who have won Grammies who went to Berklee. I bet you like or listen to some of them. The music industry is getting harder and harder to get into. People are finding that just leaving High School and playing guitar isn't gonna pay the bills, and they want more. I am glad I am at Berklee- but yes, I do plan to make business of it, but then again, I want to be a producer or engineer. Berklee doesn't make you want money only, but you need to pay for things, and people expect to get something for their time..
How many coders put 'soul' into their 'art'? Yes, those long hours of code are written better by underpaid programmers. They get better illegal operations or stack dumps...
If you have the TALENT.. You should have to pay 60 grand to learn a few tunes...
I know what you mean, but people who get real jobs- rarely get major record deals, own studios, etc... And I agree, i'm not there just to learn guitar, but rather to work on Production and Engineering... which is kinda hard to teach yourself..
Thats is as you say, professional, to be sure. But what that isn't is the guy who plays at the corner bar every tuesday. This guy isn't interested in a record deal and he has a day job. He relates his music to everyone who walks in because he hasn't sold out to the current formula, he is still raw. In fact he doesn't even have an album to sell to the 8 billion 13 year olds that the record companies might tell him he needs to market to. He doesn't _want_ to make an album, he just makes music up as he goes. Its about the music to him. And he rocks. No doubt, and I have much respect for him (man who doesn't 'sell out'). The only thing is that for me- music is also my day job, and theirfore must pay. I personally don't wanna be a guitar god or pop diva (because that would require a sex change), but rather a Producer or Engineer- it's too risky IMHO to try to only be a rock star. I don't wanna make just bubblegum pop, but if the electric company or landlord want money- you gotta do it. I would rather work with bands like Radiohead, but for now i'll take whatever pays.:)
Yea, I sell out, but at the same time- doesn't everyone with day jobs?
I think you're totally off. It's about the music, sure. But at the same time, it's a music industry or a music business, neither are music philanthropy.
I'm a student at Berklee College of Music, and a very serious musician. You do music because you enjoy it, but at the same time- by the time i'm outta here, I'll have over 60 Grand in college loans and i'll be damned if I just 'love music' and not try to pay that off, get a house, get a car, etc. I really enjoy music, and so does everyone at Berklee. Who doesn't wanna be a rock star though? No, it's not all about money. But you can't live in a cardboard box and play in the subway forever, well some people do, but not me.
And have you considered that if you are a real musician out there doing it you better be making some money to pay the bills, even if you don't get any of the money for yourself. Studio time is over $100/hour at anywhere decent. Guitars are $2000+ for ones of good quality. A drumset is gonna run at least 2000 also. Think about microphones, preamps, speakers, etc. Ok, that's just the items. But at the same time there's people that need payed. Your manager, booking agent, business manager, accountant, cover artist, web designer, producer, engineer, roadies, lighting designers, etc... They all need to live too, and if you are just playing at people's houseparties, you can't make the money to pay them, let alone you. And don't tell me that professional musicians do it all by themselves. Just open up any cd and look at all the credits. They need to get paid. Go to a concert, it makes money, but it costs money to start up. You need a lighting and sound system, tour busses, etc.
Yes, I love the music. But as a real professional, it's insulting to not try to get paid for your talent. Most programmers program because they enjoy it, but at the same time, program what the boss says, not whatever they are doodling away on randomly.
I hate to say this, but.... you're wrong.

I would rather work with bands like Radiohead, but for now i'll take whatever pays.
