  1. Re:not a rockstar on A Music Industry Case Study · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'm not big into music, but I laugh at the pretensious people who act like they know more about music then the general public, because they've decided they know more.... *grin*

I know what your saying but I think i'm actually one of those people who act like they know more than most people about music. I've been a musician for some time now, and am studing Music Production and Engineering at Berklee College Music.

  2. Re:Enviorment, not Genes for personality... on The Taste of Pain · · Score: 1

You're right. But there are too many people who blame things directly on their genetic makeup. I have heard too many parents who have adopted children comment that the reason for the kid's misconduct is due to their genes- which I think is bullshit. Ok, the kid might have a tendancy towards agression, but it's your job as a parent to help their work past that. That's part of what I feel separates us from other animals- the ability to push a little past the confinements of genetics, and try to make it better.

Ok, so if our personalities were more influenced by Genes, then why aren't all Australians violent people that steal, rape and kill?

I seriously think that enviorment has alot more to do with it than anything. Perhaps there are Genes that make people lean slightly more towards agressive behaviors. But I think it's much more enviormental than anything else.

Yea, Supermicro stuff is great. The only downside to my current board (P6DGU) is that since I am running with some fincky software (Protools LE 5.3.1) it gets a little harry reconfiguring the IRQs. Also, some of the newer features aren't on mine. But then I guess it is an older board. I just wish I could slightly upgrade the board by flashing it. No, it didn't seem typical of Compaq. I had encountered them while working as an intern for a county government, and they seemed much better.

Perhaps it was the guy had a bad day? Or just didn't like me? I guess i'll never know. I didn't think that I would get much outta it. The computer was a temporary one, just used it for a few graphic apps. The case was a little too constraining so I went afterwards to a Supermicro 760A case, and a P6DGU mobo.

I can't figure out why they were bothered by my opening the computer, and found that rather odd. I don't think he liked the fact that I couldn't step through his steps that he was told to to talk me through... who knows?

Why was I using it? It was cheap, and beforehand I was using a Pentium 90mhz computer. I thought to call to see if I could get the part. Otherwise, I would just replace the mobo with something better. I never intended to keep the Compaq for long, it was a temporary solution.

  8. Compaq too!!! on Illicit Leaky Capacitors Killing Motherboards · · Score: 3, Interesting

I had a simalar experience with Compaq. It was on an older system (PII/300mhz) a few years back. I was on my computer one night, about to call it quits and I hear a loud POP! About 20 seconds later the computer crashed and went black. It did that often though, so I didn't think anything oddly of it. I assumed the pop was a tree branch or something.

So I come back the next day to turn on the computer. Nothing. It's dead Jim. So of course I open it up to see what's wrong. When I open it up, I saw the outside casing of a capacitor laying on the floor of the case, and noticed an odd indention in the case. Aparently a capcitor near the CPU on the MOBO just blew itself off the night before and put a dent in the case! I found on the MOBO where the capacitor was, and it had greatly expanded.

Now it get funny. So I call compaq, thinking that I can ask for a new capacitor, because it seemed to be an odd one that I didn't have a spare of. I call up and I say, I need to get a new part for my motherboard. He asks me what the problem is, not listening to my question. I said the computer won't turn on because of a problem with the MOBO. He took that as a cue to run me through making sure all the cables were plugged in, etc... At one point he thought I had it in sleep mode. Moron.
Anyway, he is like, well I want you to do this- and I said "well I can't really do that I know the problem is a capacitor on the motherboard gone bad". He tells me to hit the sleep button again, making sure everything is plugged in. I say I can't do that because the computer is taken apart on my desk. (to get to anything on those you had to take half of the Chasis apart to get to the mobo, which was now laying on the desk). He seemed rather taken back by the fact that I had even opened up the case, let alone taken out the mobo.

So he says to me "didn't you see the warrentee stickers" I said yea, but how else was I supposed to put in a Voodoo 2 instead of your crappy Rage card, and more memory. He seemed to think I was supposed to send it in for that. Anyway, he wouldn't send me a capacitor. And told me to get my warrenty stuff in order and then call them.
Morons at compaq. When I build systems for people, I expect them to take them apart. It's not like I overclocked it or anything.

You need D/A convertors for the monitors, you need quality cable, you need a recording system. You'll probably want large flatscreens. You need mic preamps, compressors, microphones, great A/D convertors, etc. Then you probably want a good mixer, which will start about 10 grand, up to over half a million.

There's really alot to it. Just your Protools rig will probably top 20K if you are really going for a good setup with the new 192khz interfaces.

As it stands, I'm working several very part-time jobs, and covering living expenses pretty easily - had to take out a loan for tuition, but that's different.

I know what you are saying, but like the point you make at the end, it's really hard to live in a big city. Why live in a big city? I dunno. I am in Boston for school, and the rent is crazy. I see studios go for 1000-3000/month, and 1BR's go for 1000-4000/month. I am from North Carolina, and you can have ANYTHING there for 1200/month. Personally I pay about 100 in bills a month, 175 in groceries, and 700 (my share of rent). I guess that's around (quick, but inaccurate, math skills..) $1000+/month in living expenses. I have no car, I don't have a TV, and I don't have a Bus pass- just a subway pass, and I don't eat much. So I am trying to save money...
But with school taking up a majority of my week (bad schedule makes in almost impossible to work a job). Even if I had a job working 20 hours a week or so, I couldn't do it at min wage. I would pull about 80/week (after uncle sam's share), or 320/month. That doesn't even make a dent.

My advice, move somewhere cheap, and get a job. I have been offered jobs in NC, that would probably pay 40-60K/year after I got into them, but nope, I wanted to go to school....

Support for OS X (10.2) will be out in December, but there's no linux support in site, and we don't even think that the developers know what linux is. Perhaps some smart chaps will figure out how to take the 10.2 version to Linux, but until then...

So why don't I have a mac? For the most part I don't like OS 9.2. It's about as far from Linux to me as you can get. Windows is much more down and dirty as you would say, than Mac OS 9.2. Well, that's my opinion. I always had a PC (x86 processor) but now I want a mac, but with school costs and everything, I must sell my HP laptop to buy it, and even then I am still down on the cash....
