Are you talking about using just Skype or the additional services? Yes setting Skype up to call other Skype users is a no brainer. But it took over two weeks and many emails to get Voicemail working! It took over a week JUST TO GET A RESPONSE, and that was a worthless canned response.
Once setup it's works great, but they need better support to sell this to businesses.
Very simple. The line is there because of requests from businesses that have already standardized on Linux. These people know Linux and support is minimal. Dell wants to take care of these customers. Dell doesn't want to sell Linux to newbies or businesses without support staff already trained in Linux. It would be a nightmare for them to support...
Nowhere in the article does it say they conficated CD's. They were contacting him BEFORE they took action. While he says they should return any conficated disks, it doesn't say they actually had confiscated any.
but the gov't is a non-profit. Not a money making machine. Or at least it is not intended to be one
Have you ever heard of a government making a profit? Even if they ran a surplus, it would take several hundred years to wipe out the deficit they've already incurred!
Unless you work for a company that is publicly listed, since SEC regulations call for the permanent archiving (on "non-editable" media) of all electronic communications. Penalties for non-compliance are very steep...
Not at all. Semiconductor yields are frequently lower than 80%, but chips that survive the burn in period are very reliable. Granted, this is a mechanical device and it's a little different, but an 80% yield for a pilot project of any type is excellent.
I use my Tivo through a wired network, and it's painfully slow. It's easier to just do it real time through the record to VCR, and not deal with the Tivo software.
I remember touring Turner's facilities and seeing the banks and banks of automated Betamax storage. They converted from that, they'll convert from this system too when it's obsolete.
The article has nothing to do with facial recognition!

OpenOffice Bloated?

With the exception of Outlook, Office 2003 has never crashed on me, even when handling huge files. On the other hand, when we evaluated Open Office, we couldn't get it to stay up for more than 1/2 hour, and when it did work it was unacceptably slow.
What a stupid question. Since when has a "real" scientific background been a requirement for any form of tourism? If he's there for scientific research, he's not a tourist, is he?
Between my Tivo and my Sony 400 disk DVD jukebox, I do this now. What's the big deal?

Over two weeks to straighten out a problem. If that happened at work, we would have dumped them...

Absolutely. You beat me to making this point.
Wrong. IBM has had free versions for years. This is nothing new...
Look for Google to make acquisitions in many different sdvertising mediums, so they can offer "one stop shopping" for their advertisers.

Didn't read the article, did you? Symantec has also been doing what you're talking about for a long time, but that's not what the article is about.
how much money they are making in India now. I suspect this is just a reasonable investment for such a big market.
AnyDVD does it better, as well as many other things (disabling ads in DVD's).

others are worried that the absence of OSWD.org will hit the internet hard
I doubt anyone will really notice.
ever heard of RTFA?

You do realize, nobody is talking about the newspaper, The Onion, right? The guy owns American Onion, an American onion company.

What ever happened to Family Television time each day?
The fifties ended a long time ago...
Sure, why pay for R&D when you can get others to do it for free?

You need to get out of your dorm room and meet some people....
Same company, different interface.
