There was a time when I wasn't ashamed to be associated with them, now it seems they are trying to out-do the kooky left for crown title of loony-bin material.
I don't have a TV (not since 1989) so TiVO like devices haven't interested me, but I've been keeping a casual track on the goings-on with TiVO, MythTV, and others.
But what confuses me is this: All the "new" features they keep adding, seem like a step backward to me, are these features forced upon you regardless of device you have, or are "1st Gen" model TiVOs and whatnot, valuable property for ignoring all the new stuff?
I do IT work, have for the past 6+ years. In the past year or so, I've started to see people, who, once infected, start asking if there are alternatives where "crap like this doesn't exist"
It is slow to start, but every revolution must have a beginning.
Agreed, alt-apps are not direct clones of Windows ones, but to joe sixplack, he may not notice the difference.
Allow me one small example. Mozilla's e.mail client, Thunderbird, is such a clone of Outlook Express, that when my OE work e.mail was corrupted, and I tried to use Thunderbird to get it back, it crashed on exactly the same e.mail, and in exactly the same way, that it did under Outlook Express.
Eudora got my e.mail back, but I was saddened at how much of a clone Thunderbird was. If it's so close to Outlook Express, and apparently handles (or lack thereof) e.mail in the same way as OE, then why should I use it?
>>They're not. They're trying to get the best look and feel for the task in hand. And, believe it or not, so is windows. And, surprise surprise, the answers come up similar.
Thi is the reason all my illicit activity done on a computer, is done on really obscure platforms.
That way, if I'm ever caught, it'll be hard for the authorities to find out what I did, cuz my machines are all arkane and shit, or something like that.
Do you know why? Because my morals are not their morals.
Their country is (dare I say radically?) different than mine, and as such, I don't have the right to tell them what to do with their laws/morals/culture.
I have several clients who run CNC milling machines. Big ones, for the Big 3 automakers. They make very specific custom widgets.
If the software that controls the hardware fucks up, and it's obvious (or provable), then the software maker eats the cost of any widgets made that weren't made right.
There *are* industries out there were 100% uptime, and 100% accuracy, are default requirements of the software.
Given that most viruses these days seem to have a built-in e.mailing client (or the ability to hijack Outlook Express), it would be trivial to create a virus that e.mails itself out to those in teh Address Book, then scramble the hard drive of the user.
That way, the infection stays one step ahead of notification.
Instead, we get these "low level" ones that turn your PC into a zombie or gateway for spam. Ho-hum.
I say those writing the new viruses lack the saavy to create a really *destructive* one, unlike virus writers of years past.
You *do* know the OS/2 powered ATM machines are *bone stock* PCs, right?
Even the card reader is bone stock, there are ways around any number of security systems, you wouldn't need to open one up, just interface through the card reader.
to the Republican party?

Free speech indeed...

Where are all the Bush bashers now?
(Sure, this is a flamebait comment, but most, if not all, comments bashing a Head of State is, regardless of merit)
I'm not so sure-
I do IT work, have for the past 6+ years. In the past year or so, I've started to see people, who, once infected, start asking if there are alternatives where "crap like this doesn't exist"

And every single comment on my original comment, misses the point.
Try running a new disto, with KDE, or Gnome on this, and get back to me.
I've played wiht Linux on 500MHZ cpus, Linux crawls on this.
Unless this distro is *highly* modified with a very lightweight GUI, I think people are going to be unhappy with it.

I disagree, BeOS did it (the GUI) better.
Not good enough. If free were the only factor in people's mind, then Linux would rule the world.
I don't get it, why does it seem so many alt-os projects are forever trying to emulate the look and feel of a Windows environment?
Linspire, KDE, GIMP, and others, if you spent the time improving, not cloning, your application, perhaps you'd get more users.
I mean really, if your app is going to look, feel, and function, like a Windows one, why should I use yours??
Except it doesn't work.
I used to use their 98Lite on an old Fujitsu box, set it as win95 look and feel, no IE, super slimmed down, and used Opera.
1st time it connected to the internet, I clicked on a link (turned out to be a video file) and bang, IE popped up trying to install something.
I was most displeased to see their product didn't function as claimed, especially since I had paid for it.
I liked the film, for one main reason:
They managed to pull off a translation to big screen, a long running comic series that has almost no action in it, just lots of plot and intrigue.
Tricky to make into a 2 hour "big budget" flick.

Mainly I just like using weird platforms.
>>Immoral deed being done by an organized body which claims to have a monopoly, or at the very least a mandate, on justice, are still immoral
But immoral by whose standards?
Mine?
Yours?
Theirs?
It's their country, by what "right" do I have to tell them how to run it, and conversely, what right do they have to tell us how to run ours?
None, except by force, and so far, that's not being considered.
Personally, I don't have a problem with this.
Do you know why? Because my morals are not their morals.
Their country is (dare I say radically?) different than mine, and as such, I don't have the right to tell them what to do with their laws/morals/culture.
This is the way of the world.
Then you don't work in the same circles I do.

>>That would be the chapter about running more inferior, costly solutions?
You mean, custom, business-specific, fully supported 24x7, money-back guarantee if it fails, applications, right?
>>Yes, but most of the ppl who are credible AND have a fair amount of evidence are the ones who are sounding off on man made global warming.
And 25 years ago, according to some old articles in Newsweek (and a few other places) Global Cooling was the new coming disaster.
Many scientists of the day were seriously concerned about the drop in temperatures causing all kinds of havoc.
Make of this what you will. Who's to say what might be found out in the *next* 25 years?
Respectfully, I disagree.
Allow me to explain:

>>...how about you finding reasons why it IS OK?
Defending yourself, or others in harm's way, for starters.
>>Violence against anyone is wrong...
No, it's not.
I've done work in and around them. They are bone stock (at least, the ones I worked in/around are)
Goddamn but yer a schmuck. How hard is it to give the UPS store your work number, or a fucking fake number?
Jesus what a dick you are.
custom made a card, with buffer overruns or other scripts on it, swipe through card reader, and bang! you're in.
Note: having been in the same room as the servicing of some OS/2-powered machines, I've seen them updated by card swiping....
You *do* know the OS/2 powered ATM machines are *bone stock* PCs, right?
