You are forgetting that there is much profit to be made by licensing your brand new spiffy game engine to other developers. Just look at all the companies that have licensed the quake engine in the past (Valve included).
Learning php in conjunction with html may be the way to go. The reason for this is that unlike most "hello world" programs which end up in the boring and seemingly non-relevant console, her first programs will be on the web: something she is familer and comfortable with and immediatly sees the value of. In other words, it may be best to try to keep things relevant and relating it to ideas she already knows well.
The original intent of copyright (in the US anyway, not sure about Australia) was for it to be a means to encourage creativity for the public's sake, not simply to make publishers rich.
Actually it was to encourage creativity by allowing the creators (working with/through the publishers) to become rich. Why would someone spend large amounts of time creating something without guarentee that, if successful, would put food on their table and not someone elses?
Sure some of the big publishers today are evil but you have to keep in mind it was always about the money.
How can it bring value to any market when you can do the job on a less expensive piece of hardware?
Another 'insightful' comment from someone who is too lazy to read...
If you already use proprietary UNIX-based software, put simply, the Blade 1500 allows you get more work done. With roughly twice the processing power of the Blade 150 and the 3D capabilities of the Wildcat4-powered XVR-600 graphics adapter, the amount of time you'll save in industrial applications is well worth the initial cost of the machine. The SunPCI adds an incredible amount of value, allowing you to run Windows applications on the same machine with the ability to easily transfer files to Solaris.
I just poked around kazaa a bit and found the video of US soldiers that was shown to most of the world but censored in the US. Perhaps p2p could be used to distribute images from al-jazeera as well?
Yes p2p can be used for more than just music, movies, and porn...
"This radiation is the remnant of the Big Bang, the explosion which forged the universe in trillion-degree temperatures. More than 11 billion years later, this heat has cooled to minus 270 degrees, but is still detectable."
When was the Big Bang theory proven and the guesstimation of 11 billion years determined to be fact? Does it bother anyone else that so many modern day theories are presented as fact so often that the general public doesn't stop to question but simply accepts these theories and statistics as factual truths?
I'm not saying these kinds of statements are right or wrong but I for one am tired of talking to people who will bite my head off if these theories are questioned in any way.
Simply disable cdrom and floppy boot in the BIOS and set a password so these settings can't be changed. Sure people can still get at data by taking apart the box but that becomes a bit more obvious in a public or office environment.
Of course, there's still the "pre-dawn-raid-and-seize-hard-drive" tactic which I've heard makes that moot...
Any real geek would be at his workstation until dawn. He would hear the FBI bust down the door and have more than enough time to scramble a fdisk command into the console.
If the linux nwn client is anything like the linux nwn server then I wouldn't even bother with it. The linux NWN dedicated server has given us major problems with stability and being the source of lag by not handeling encounters very well.
I have been playing the NWN client on windows 2000 since last summer. It is stable (as much as nwn can be for it being nwn) and runs great for hours at a time. The win32 server also has stayed up for 12 hours at a time before needing a reboot (this is good for a nwn server).
This might be a big step for linux gameing but it is still not that big of a deal. Anyone who is serious about NWN should just stick to the windows version like the rest of the serious gamers in the world.

I was not trying to bash people who steal, I was simply making statments about people who steal and try to hide behind their moral justifications when deep down, they just want free crap like everyone else.
(3) Customers want to do the right thing, if they can
I tend to disagree with this. I think it is safe to assume that a majority of the people in the US will always take the 'free' alternative if they can get away with it with ease. People says that "If the music industry let me pay $.50 per song to download in a unrestricted format, I would pay instead of steal" and while some would, most would still get their music from kazaa. The reason why we hear people on slashdot say this so much is that they know a system like this will never happen with the current RIAA. Instead they decide to use it as a poor moral justification to their illegal music swapping habit.
In conclusion: (1) People like stealing if it is anonymous, easy, and leaves no possibility of getting caught and (2) People need to stop trying to justify their actions as if it were some kind of morally justified duty bound civil disobedience
On a side note, I have gigs of downloaded mp3's but will not pretend that I have a good reason for breaking the law.
I personally can't wait to see it either as the trailer was awesome... except for the fact that they used music orrgionaly composed for the move Requiem for a Dream. I kept having visions of elves shooting up heroin after hearing the music.
What the slashdotters will say?!
on
Cringely on P2P
·
· Score: 4, Funny
Nothing new there, but as usual, the interesting part is what SlashDotters will say here afterward
- P2P is just a technology and P2P networks shouldn't be shut down
- The RIAA sucks
- I will say I will pay for music when the price is fair and I can do whatever I want with it
- What about OGG vorbis?
- My underpants smell as they have not been changed in 2 weeks
It's a bit more complicated than that as you would also either need to update apache using RPM's (no fun) or recompile it from source.
Tack on about 30 more commands to those 4 and you might get somewhere...
Does anyone remember the Sea Quest episode where they built one of these things underwater? They brought up an interesting point... what happens when the brakes go out at extreme velocities and no friction to slow you down?
Does anyone else think it would be cool if you could get R2 to serve drinks at your party like in Jabba's air ship? [Forgive me for not knowing the correct name of Jabba's vehicle *waits to get crucified*]

It is detremental to society to limit the distribution of progress in every way except by which it encourages inventors.

When did Massachusetts get so evilly ambitious?

Team Fortress 2... And seemingly Half-life 2
While many parallels may be drawn, beer tends to increase a geeks chance of finding a woman. Linux, unfortunately, does the opposite.
You were just waiting for a reason to gloat that you have a fiancee to the slashdot crowd weren't you?

I hate to remind everyone but it is still January of 2003... which means she will be around for awhile still.

Also, it's not like CD sales have decreased Umm, it's well known that music sales have declined the last year or two.
