Yhis could just be me still being ticked that MS even tried a stunt like this, but does anyone know how much Dell actually pays for a license for each box. This is hypothetical, but lets say that MS GIVES them the os (or for like $10) a box, because they know that end user is probably going to use Exploder, MSN, and probably buy and Office product, not to mention the data it gathers on people who use the "free" Passport. So maybe the cost is the same or very close to the same for Dell to sell a Osless Pc and A windows PC. Like I said I don't know these things for sure it is just a stab in the dark. Also all those asking why no Linux OS, can you imagine how hard it would be to get a commitee together to decide which linux to ship, and we all know how fanatical Linux users can get (I know I am one) I can see all over the place "What the hell is Dell thinking shipping Corel Linux, its such a Piece of crap, they should have shipped (insert your fave distro here)" so the freedos is a great idea!

I admit I thought that Dell was going to bend over and just take it, I am glad to see they were inventive and found a way to get around a truly unfair business practice. Good Job Dell!!!

I hope more companies that get bullied (and I mean even if this wasn't slashdot I think most people would agree that this was bullying) by MS will come up with different ways to follow thier stupid restrictions and still give it to MS. Again good goin Dell!

  6. Re:No, OVERVALUED on Is Today's IT an Undervalued Asset? · · Score: 1

I am a CTO at a company and maybe I am too close to it to be objective, but if anything Overvalued is not the word I would use for me. I am the first one in, and the last one out EVERY day, and have never had a weekend where a client didn't call me, heaven forbid I get a vacation. While I do agree with the software and hardware spending I keep my shop running as lean and mean as possible because I also realize that for a company to survive and thrive they need to be frugal. I am not complaining about having to work all the time, because I love what I do but I don't think me or any of my assistants (only 2) are Overvalued. While there are for sure companies out there that are (were) spending too much on IT, it is still a very important part of any successfull company nowadays.

This is just my opinion but I think the fact that Mozilla did do it right by not making it be different on every platform. I use OS X mainly but have a unix and winblows box and I like the fact that I can go to any three and have my tabs and they all have the OS X theme so it looks good on top of that.

And this is a question just for ponderence (probably not a word) why should an app have to be a windows feeling app? As long as th UI is good, I'd prefer it to not have a windows UI because then that means the Unix and Mac versions get stuck with a UI that I didn't like to begin with. I know a lot of programers go to the system ui on each OS, but I have had too many windows feeling apps on my Mac to deal with.

Unix geeks and Mac Lovers should unite for a common goal in Open Office, the biggest problem is many users have no idea what fink is and are scared of the command line so we need a true OS X port of it, but I will be downloading it today!

Well we told the client that we were not going to do it and I still have my job, I know a lot of employers aren't like that but if we keep quiet how can we invoke standards in the work place.
