  1. This is a very good thing. on It's Official - AMD Buys ATI · · Score: 5, Interesting

    http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=33 219
    *head asploded*

I'm getting the 'gist' of why this transaction needs to happen. AMD needs GPU functionality on the CPU. I think everyone kinda expected that to happen at some point. The Inq. then takes a left turn in the plot and mentions 'mini-cores' which are multi-cores with massive amount of threads. Sort of but not really like Intels' hyperthreading times 32x. Shitloads of threads.

    Bottom line?

ATI will work on AMD's new cores. I don't know if they'll work on something that'll plug into a PCIe slot still like nVidia.

nVidia will still be around making graphic cards for AMD. Just won't necessarily be anything remotely similar to what's out on the stores today. AMD doesn't like closed technology like Intel does. So it'll be an open platform still which is a 'good thing' (tm).

Forget about GPU's and chipsets. The main innovation has to come from these new GCPU's.

ATI was going to lose its Intel chipset business anyway with or without this takeover. So no big loss here.

Intel has about a year lead on this tech and probably be first out to market with it.

CPU cores change radically every 5 years or so. With GCPU's, think more in terms of GPU's and radical changes every year to 18 months. Crazy shit.

Plenty of space at FAB 36 to build the new cores and the recently announced plant they are building in New York. So no more costly production runs in Taiwan.

If AMD didn't do this, they'd be out of business in 5 years. Period.

Of couse Norton & Mccaffe were two off my list the quickest. CA's eTrust was what I used personally before but that software disables itself if you don't close down the computer properly. It kept forcing me to reinstall it over and over every time that happend. That and the fact they supported Sony's rootkit thing which I sent one hell of an email back at them saying I'll never trust thier service ever again. So now it was a battle between NOD32 & PC-cillin. It basically boiled down to how much of a resource hog they were and NOD32 won that one easily. So I tossed it on my folks computer and that damn thing cleaned up the mess on there really good. Seems like my mom liked playing games from MyWay.com and it placed viruses in these java applets that spread everywhere else. NOD32 did an excellent job not only cleaning up the mess but clueing in as to where the problem was comming from. This is a little off-topic, sorry. You can make an unlimited amount of custom XP discs, but just how often are you allowed to use the Product Activation service? I mean, it seems like everytime I reinstall XP these days I got to call Microsoft up for a 60000 digit confirmation number. I'm getting sick of that. It's basically forcing me to give up reinstallations alltogether because of the hassle involved. And yes using Windows Update is critical in determining if a particual install I'm doing will work the way I want to or not since I don't know if I properly installed all the damn hotfixes from my custom made cd or not. Now I got this XP cd years ago and it seems like recently MS is bitching about OEM cd's, like the one I got with a power spitter cable at newegg, being tied to only one montherboard. Swap the MB out (like I have 4 times due to shitty MB's), and I would have been forced to by a new CD 4 times? Why didn't they clarify that years ago? Doesn't sound like a FULL OS if it's so restricted in reinstalls or upgrades you can do you your machine. I swear, I bitched about this issue to their manager when I was forced to do a reinstall AGAIN just after I bought a new creative soundcard which was the last piece of my major upgrade last November(found out it was a bios issue with my Abit MB).

I'm tired of calling them up and 'making up an excuse'. Why should I be forced to? Are custom CD's only good for like businesses that don't have to deal with this shit? Would paying $300 for the full retail version of XP/Vista solve this problem?

This does suck in a way as it'll be the end of the crazy super bargain deals where Toys R Us has a 33% off each item (3 item minimum) and an Amazon.com coupon for an additional %20 off that amount. It was a killer deal back in September where I got the Star Wars Lego Imperial Star Destroyer (reg price $300) for like 55% off. I'm going to miss those kind of deals. *sniff* *sniff* :).....

I was hoping Digital Extremes Pariah game would kick major ass but it didn't which disapointed me greatly since it wasn't a sequel unlike many others.

I sometimes think that gamers who play games all the time need to realise something. With reading many books, plots will become repetative and boring. With watching too much TV, every story seems to play out the same old cliche (OMG! It wasn't real! It was just a dream!!). With games it's the same old shit but due to cost factors, it sticks out more of a sore thumb.

Been there done that affects every industry. People just waking up to that fact or something?

As for new gameplay ideas, THEY ARE OUT THERE AND COMMING SOON FOLKS!! Spore, DNF, Prey, Gears of War.. ect. New game ideas take longer to execute properly so that's why you'll see less of them.

I can't believe people complain about stupid things like this. Oh wait, they're hardcore gamers/game reviewers so they HAVE to play everything. So how about this as a solution. You play too many games so admit that and shut up.

  25. My review of Mozilla Firefox on Mozilla Firebird gets .8 Release, and New Name · · Score: 5, Informative

    Mozilla Firefox 0.8 Review

Some of the best things I like about Mozilla Firefox 0.8:

    1. Two words - Bookmark Management

Wow! I was able to modify/delete/rename/move 450 bookmarks in a few short hours. It was a combination of being able to edit bookmarks off the menu bar easily and opening a whole folder of websites in seconds. It makes Internet Explorer's 'Organize Favorites' look like a sick joke. Actually it is and I consider it one of the very weak things about Internet Explorer (lets call it IE for short). I simply cannot check all 450 bookmarks to see if the website still exists while using IE. With Mozilla Firefox, it only took like a half hour to get that part done. Tabbed browsing works. Big time. I used to use Tabbrowser Extensions to add some additional tweaks but found it hindered things more than helped. I'll mention what those are in my what I dislike about Mozilla Firefox section.

    2. It doesn't crash

Oh Mozilla Firefox can still crash if there's bad code written for a web page, make no mistake about that. Still, it's very very rare and it's so much more stable than any Mozilla 1.x Application Suite release. Perhaps its because I have more confidence in Mozilla Firefox than with the Mozilla Application Suite (call it App. Suite for short), due to some previously bad experiences doing real web development with Composer with the 1.5 release. However, this whole crash issue is more of a release-by-release kind of thing. It's my hope that the Mozilla development team continues to focus on making Mozilla Firefox as crash proof as possible. Keep up the good work!

    3. Mozilla Firefox loads up fast

It is way faster than the App. Suite due to it not preloading several applications I don't use at all. I have no confidence in using Mozilla Mail, nor do I use an email account with POP access. I've tried Composer and it crashed on a regular basis that it was a totally useless program. I also have no clue on how to use ChatZilla, and I keep my small address book in a text file. So my main focus has always been on how well the Mozilla web browser was. Now with Mozilla Firefox I have a web browser that loads almost as fast as IE and to me it's important that it loads fast because it greatly hindered me from switching over for good.

    4. Properly displayed webpages

There's always going to be one minor annoyance per website since it was built with IE in mind, but all in all, Mozilla developer team finally nailed it. It's good enough for most webpages and when I can't view a webpage properly in Mozilla Firefox , I switch over to IE quickly. There's an extension called 'IE View' that adds a right-click menu option that'll open IE for whatever webpage you are currently on at the moment. Very handy feature and its something I use every now and then. Certain webpages that just don't work well include any Microsoft/MSN website, pages like this http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime .php?id=1825 (try to click on the details link in the middle where they rate the anime, note the website seems down at the moment). MBNA payment page won't work anymore.. ect. Little things like this.

    5. Options dialogue box

This was one of the things I always thought were desperately needed for a Mozilla web browser. The Application Suite way only shows a directory name (which is sometimes truncated), and you have to double click to see more directories underneath it in order to get to the specific preferences you wanted to change. First of all, you can't at a quick glance get to the section you want right away. There needed to be a visual aid to help guide you to the section you wanted. I always thought the most *ideal* way was a combination of icons and a word or two to describe the general section of preferences. I couldn't believe what I was seeing with the first release of Mozilla Firefox that I tested. Icons plus a short word or two that's not truncated plus I didn't need to do anymo
