I was never terribly impressed with Jericho, everything seemed overly urgent all the time, like 24... but maybe you like that? The key phrase here would be "intended result". The manufacturer/distributor made it work as it was intended to work, so it is effective. The fact that it can be circumvented in no way lessens it's ability to work as intended, ie: it's not 'defective'.

  8. Re:No, but it is getting more problematic on Is Email 'Bankrupt'? · · Score: 1

Sounds like someone needs to create a discussion board client/server suite, similar to email but way more boxed in security wise, ie: it is not public and only user/pass authenticated posts/replies get in.

The UI could be a lot more targeted to threaded discussions, with filtering rules etc. pulled from email clients but also some of the better elements of web based d-Boards. As a local client app the UI would be a lot more responsive and capable, maybe include SQLite for doing local stores of downloaded threads so it wouldn't need to access the server except for the first view of a topic and for live updating.

Maybe this is too much? OTOH it seems like email is too little for this use and that existing web based apps are too slow and prone to security problems because they have to talk over 80 or be even slower over 443 AND they drain the server resources due to high number of DB calls, so are inherently server killers.

Email wasn't meant for this kind of mass threaded discussion.. it's why discussion boards were invented. Hey that's an idea... set up a discussion board AND publish an RSS feed of the latest posts. Maybe one per thread as well.

Keep your eye on the ball, which is 5 years from now, no matter when now is. That 40% you put into growing your money will compound no matter how poorly you manage it. In 5 years you will have a hell of a lot more money than you had before AND because you bought a house your housing investment will also appreciate and you can then sell and get something much nicer.

In 10 years you may even look like a respectable member of society AND you'll have enjoyed getting there.

I say it's censorship. Google can easily provide a way to disable ads of this nature 'by preference' from the user.... and 'by preference' from the client. They simply have to put in few checkboxes for each: "Do you prefer to not see/serve ads of the following nature: [list of potentially repugnant services]"

They do this already with image/ad/results filtering of 'adult content'.

There isn't even a good economic reason to avoid this feature. Google should empower users to block all ads in search results... most of their money comes from hosted ads now anyways, so why not allow their searches to be clean and virtuous for those who aren't interested in buying anything right now. They could even close up the ad box to just show a headline bar "There are 5 ads relevant to your search, click to view" where clicking would slide open the ad box.

Google should be all about personalizing the web experience for their users through providing choices.... not taking away choices.

Why any color professional would rely on RGB to begin with is beyond me. It's great for web and digital display graphics as the color space is equivalent (still test your work on the deployment platform (screen model, projector, kiosk, etc.) before stating "it's done"... it's called Quality Control). For print work OTOH it sucks balls. Some other poster mentioned matchprints, color proofs... I'll add in press checks. These are what you use for color QC, not the monitor. Then you use absolute values from colorometric profiles to fix what's wrong.

Also it's really dumb to think that your laptop screen is good for this type of work. Get a laptop sure they're great, I use one. Then get a 2nd display... even a small one. Use that for doing your digital spot checks. A high quality 17in. monitor that has been perfectly fine for this type of work for at least a decade will cost you under $200.

  21. Re:3 Choices on Better Communication with Non-Technical People? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Graphic Designers use this same technique. We are always asked to develop multiple 'comps' or compositions to present to a client. Usually there is really only a budget for one 'comp' as creativity takes way more time than people think and we always always take as much time as we can to come up with something interesting to us AND the client (good designers also consider business needs, demographics, existing branding strategies, etc. etc.).

SO, we will typically make 3 designs. A) is bland and boring but meets the requirements. B) is outrageous and cool and but doesn't meet requirements and C) meets requirements but has a very cool concept that we spent 90% of the time working up.

They usually pick A ;-p but we got to have fun on B and C.... AND the client feels like we made a great effort to present them with viable options (even though B was never in the budget) and every once in a while some client will go crazy and pick something other than A or incorporate some aspect of B and C into A.

Be careful though, never present (design or technical) any option that you DO NOT want them to pick. They assume that all options are recommended because you presented them. You wouldn't be presenting a bad option now would you?
