I found out through Steam. I finished playing a game and closed the game down. At this point Steam brings up some advertisements about the latest releases or deals in a separate window, instead this time it had a message fro Gabe explaining what had happened.
I've done this a couple of times (a long time ago) in a sense. I changed the motherboard and ran Windows* straight away with re-installing. It detected the new hardware and installed drivers or I installed from the motherboard CD. Not much hassle. It was a long time ago. At least 5 years probably more like 8 years or longer.
* I can't remember if it was 98, 98se, Me or XP or even a couple of them.
This can be scripted. I have written my own script for backups. It looks at the size of the capacity of a DVD minus the size of the file then creates the par2 files based on the remaining space. Once the par2 files have been created it creates the ISO ready for burning.
It could then burn to DVD automatically but I prefer to wait until I'm ready to burn as it can take some time to generate the par2 files.
Try Amarok, I believe it will now run on windows, but given that you will probably have to install KDE libraries to run it, it might seem too much like bloatware. Amarok is the best media player that I've used though bear in mind that I haven't used a great many media players. Look it up.
I cannot see the difference between giving a coordinating authority your copyright to your code or giving it to the FSF directly or through GPLPresent version or later. You no longer have control.
Same here. I recently moved from Thunderbird to KMail with Bogofilter. Thunderbird was good at detecting spam but an awful lot of the same variety from the same source was still getting through (Money Market I think). With Bogofilter I didn't even set it up right. I only put about 600 spam through it (no ham) and it worked great. Very little was wrongly detected (either false positives or false negatives) and what it did get wrong it learnt quickly.
A month later and my spam went from about 20 a week average to about 70 a week (not a lot for some people but 250% increase for myself). I thought Blueyonder (my ISP) had simply removed or ammended their filters.
When installing Windows for friends and family I now just use the Windows firewall unless they are a little more savvy. If you have ever watched a user with zonealarm (for instance) they will always click on allow as they rarely, if ever, read what it is trying to tell them. Or they always click on 'Deny' and wonder why nothing works! They rarely seem to notice the 'always' checkbox. How can anyone get any enjoyment using a PC in this manner.
It is pointless having a firewall which monitors outgoing connections for a lot of users because of this. Last month I watched one of them click 'Ignore' (I think it was ignore as it kept repeatedly appearing every so often) when AVG caught a Trojan trying to activate. When I tried to point out what she had done she just shushed me as she was too engrossed with messenger! She never once read what it was trying to tell her. Her sound card drivers are kaput and it needs to be fixed but I just cannot be bothered to fix it.
If I install ZoneAlarm on anyone's PC these days I try to configure it for the programs they use. Unfortunately this means that I have to install everything to make sure that they have a working PC afterwards which is why I generally avoid it. I just stick on the Windows firewall, AVG, Spyware Blaster, Firefox and Adaware SE Personal (not that they ever run it).
Funny how they are completely clueless about computers but if you put them in a limited account it is amazing how quickly it becomes one with full administrative privileges.
The only person who I've had any success with is my daughter.
Speeding and tailgaiting is a far worse crime than running a torrent site. I suggest the death penalty for those crimes to be handed out by the officer when you get pulled over.... they should put things into perspective.
I truly wish I had mod points to mod you up. 5 months in prison for a crime where no one is hurt. No potential for anyone to be hurt such as someone speeding. Where nothing is stolen.
This is something that I have been thinking a lot about lately and it really is pissing me off for some reason. I think the last time I saw the night sky in all its glory was about 20 years ago. I remember as a kid (I'm 41 now) my mother taking me home after visiting my grandmother and looking up at the night sky in complete awe. I was walking along the street looking upwards not where I was going. A most amazing sight.
My modest ambition before I die is to see the night sky at least once more.
Imagine movies with product-placement ads tailored to your tastes, delivered to you free courtesy of sponsors who target ads specifically at you.
The trouble with this is the advertisers would be "preaching to the choir". I think they would rather advertise to people who weren't already buying their products.
After all, the terrorists might be sneaking communications imbeded into the background of jpg pictures of 90 year old women getting pooped on by robots.
Yeah, as one person's sig put it; count me in with the robot smashers.
You are the only other person I know, apart from myself who enjoyed The Hulk. When I came out from the cinema after the film I was on a high. I was picking up my son and bounding him through the air. I must have looked like a right prat.
I find that anti virus software and firewall is one area of Windows where there are plenty of good free products so there is no need to part with cash. Depending what they want to do with their PC it might be an idea to market Linux as "nearly" virus proof. If you have Knoppix lying around give them a copy to use for when Windows goes down.
Nope. So there are many reasons why people will do something the law says illegal. above are two of them, just lowering the cost won't make all the people stop. Even if iTunes overtakes P2P I don't believe everyone will give up P2P.
Neither do I, as peoples attitudes and ideology to this (and everything else) cover from one extreme to another. The point that I was trying (badly) to make was that a lot more people would buy if the price was more reasonable. There would still be people who wouldn't buy the product if the price was a penny but would still download it if they like it.

Sorry, meant to mod you funny and clicked overrated instead. Posting to correct moderation.

It simply comes down to who do you trust most?
Someone mod the parent up. Scary read.

Now I know.

No, but would you agree that if you do speed and hurt someone that you should be punished more than if you speed and don't hurt anyone?
There is no proof that they lost any money. It's entirely possible (perhaps unlikely) that they may have made more money than they would otherwise.

This is truly out of all proportion.
I actually like this joke 0.6745% of the time
"I fart in your general direction"
Sir Galahad: Is there someone else up there we could talk to?
French Soldier: No, now go away before I taunt you a second time.

What I find most amusing is that they will blame pirates even if profits are up. WTF!
Yeah, as one person's sig put it; count me in with the robot smashers.
Now The Fantastic Four, that was awful.
It's true that they cannot "steal" your identity, only copy it. But after they copy your identity then the real theft can occur.

No need to apologise. It wasn't clear at all what I was trying to say.

What are you trying say that "I've been played". Damn.
