Well, besides the fact that they dont geographically overlap at all. Just because its possible that they could interbreed doesn't mean that they ever would in the wild, Ligers and Tigons are artificial species and require humans to be produced. Also, their offspring are almost always infertile. There are many more differences besides their fur and markings. Also, I believe that various species of lions and tigers have been palentologicaly diferentiated specialy going back many thousands of years.

  2. TV Library. on Hitachi's 500GB SATA-II Reviewed · · Score: 2, Interesting

Compression free video? I rip or download files for all the TV DVDs i've got, and more. Average 1hr show is around 350MB in a DivX or Xvid .avi. Seems like a lot of space, but its really only about a fifth of the space of whats on the DVD. Compression is good these days, but its still not as crisp as off the discs themselves. Sure having the DVDs is nice, but you've still gotta pick one, take it off the shelf, put it in the player, switch your AV stuff to it. Whole lot easier to treat the DVDs as a backup to sit on a shelf for display, or even in a box, and then just being able to call up anything in seconds off the HD. Its nice to hit a button and have my playlist of a couple dozen series come up on shuffle. Its like adult swim, sci-fi channel and TNT daytime all rolled into one whenever i want. I have 2 250GB SATA drives in RAID0, and infact ordered another 100GB drive the other day to move my music onto (65 or so gigs of legally ripped CDs, 300+ CDs @256kb MP3). If i had the money, would i like 2 of these? Hell yes, double my storage without taking up any more room in my already full case. I will admit that all my stuff isn't 100% legal, but thats more out of practicality, simpsons DVDs are only up to season 5... and fair use vs DMCA with the issue of me being too lazy to rip stuff myself...

  12. The consumer doesnt care! on Inside Hardware Design - Competing Against the iPod · · Score: 1

Most consumers dont know or dont care, they use whatever they have/download. WMA is the default if you rip a cd, AAC for itunes. You can get 3rd party rippers (i use audiocrusher, and rip to 256mb MP3s, good mix of quality, compression, and compatability), but you have to download and install the encoders yourself for legal reasons. Only geeks do that. But really, the consumer doesn't care about quality, or mp3 never woulda taken off. Check any p2p network, rough estimate, 85% of the files will be 128mb MP3s, 10% WMVs at whatever the default bitrate of WMP is(96?). The remaining 5% will be mp3s, mostly at 192mb with a few VBR abd 320mb files, probably less than a percent. Ogg will never take off because its not a default for anything (except audiocrusher since its the only encoder they could legally bundle), and most people havn't even heard of it.

This all of course depends on your taxonomical definition of speciation. Weither throught simple taxonomy or through gene sequencing. Some people would argue that every distinct breed of dog is a species, while others argue the opposite that dogs are one species since they can all readily interbreed. This of course is not the only factor, since nearly all equines can interbreed (although not necesarily create fertile offspring). Even taxonomicaly is a sixth digit that much of a difference? Despite our ability to inbreed, one could argue that the basic races of the world, given their different colorations, physical features etc could be classified as seperate species. Species have been differentiated for less... On a similar subject, out of curiosity, has anyone ever knocked up a chimp? They're supposedly 99% genetically similar to us, are their chromosonal differences keeping us from having monkey-men? But anyway, it would take a complete collapse of civilization, a loss of language, sudden geographical isolation, and probably a major ecological shift for humans to evolve radically to fill another nich. Basically where humans are going is taller, less hair, etc, the same characteristics that have been progressing for the past million years or so in our species. Interestingly enough, your point about 6 digit humans reminded me of one of my own theories that the pinkey is becoming opposable. Think about it, we'd definitly benifit from having another oposable digit, and although the bone structure is not that different, the muscle structure on the pinkey is different from the other 3 fingers, allowing it to opperate more independently.
