When one party to an "Agreement" can change the terms and conditions of that "Agreement" and the other party has no recourse other than to accept the changes or abandon the "Agreement" in its entirety, then there never was an "Agreement", just a set of required terms and conditions. "Agreements" imply a certain amount of trust and honor between parties. Intuit's "Agreement" is anything but that.

We went through this with 56K modem and 802.11g standards. A vendor's marketing department tries to get the jump on everyone else by introducing equipment that is "pre-standard". People buy them to get the latest whiz-bang capability and either don't care about the consequences or are too clueless to understand them. If the approved standard turns out to be what the equipment uses then the company is home free with an existing market share. If not then marketing beats on engineering to put together a minimum cost (to the company) upgrade path. If there is no practical upgrade path then the customer is left with a doorstop and no recourse because the unread fine print says compatibility is not guaranteed. Either way the company profits by being first out of the gate.

No, you can not legislate morality and ethics, only behaviour. Morality and ethics are expressions of a person's internal belief system. Society creates laws to govern the behaviour of those individuals whose sense of morality and ethics are deficient or unacceptable (this is important) as defined by that society.

Pull the disk drives out of the equipment and put the rest in the drum to soak for a hour. Tie a stiff-bristle brush to a long stick and scrub the equipment as needed. When you think the stuff is clean enough, rinse it thoroughly in another 55 gallon drum of clean hot water. Remove from the rinse, shake off the excess water and dunk it in a drum of 99% isopropyl alcohol to absorb the rest of the water. Air dry and check for damage before returning to service. Do this outside and keep the alcohol drum away from the two with the fires under them. When finished, seal the drums and leave them with somebody you don't like.
