"The only reason it's still popular, as far as I can figure out, is because it's hyped so much as being "the easiest" and "the most feature-filled" and whatnot, when every other distribution has caught up with and, dare I say, surpassed Ubuntu in usability."
Ubuntu is still the most usable, simply because it's the most well-supported. Yes, I realize that anything that works on Ubuntu will generally work on any Debian-based distro, but the fact is that Ubuntu is kind of the 'standard' for desktop Linux these days. And Redhat/CentOS is the standard for servers.
The *vast* majority of how-tos/FAQs/setup guides you will find for Linux and Linux software is written with Redhat or Ubuntu in mind. So why use any other distro? They're all Linux, after all. Might as well use one that is heavily documented.
Netflix isn't stupid. They want advertising revenue just like every other network. Why else would they do this? $100 million is a lot of money, if you are going to just "give it away" to Netflix subscribers.
My guess is that the show will have ads. If you don't want ads, you can pay extra. Never mind that you are ALREADY paying for Netflix.
You are trying to game the system. But all the ISPs and wireless phone providers have anticipated what you are trying to do, and they don't want you to be able to do it. At least, not in a way that is satisfying.
You might be able to get it to work, sort-of, but you won't end up with a phone that works very well. Frankly, you're better off buying a pre-paid Verizon data card for data, and a pre-paid "burner" cell phone.
Yes, SyFy's programming sucks, but let's not pretend that "Caprica", or "Stargate:Universe", or even the last years of "MST3K" were GOOD. They were all terrible, and deserved to be canceled.
Seriously. It's not worth it. Google/Postini does it better than you can. Pay them to be the MX record for your domain, and let it handle all of the SMTP traffic, and then spit the non-spam mail to your on-site mail server. Much better.
Running your own internet-facing mail server these days is a colossal pain-in-the-ass. Let Google do it.
All Google has to do is say to Oracle, or IBM, or anyone that tries to sue them for violating their ridiculous patents is this:
"Okay. How about we de-list all of your sites from our search engine, and block all of your IP space from using our search engine, or any of our other sites, like YouTube? Oh, and we'll renegotiate all of our peering agreements, so that we don't route any traffic from your networks over our network, too."
I mean, Google isn't *required* to index anybody's site, or offer service to anyone it doesn't want.
The PATRIOT Act is here to stay. There is NO WAY the Federal Government is going to willingly give up all the powers it granted them.
Of all the stupid things that happened during the Bush years, that is by far the most damaging. And it's going to take a Congress and a President with a hell of a lot more spine to repeal it. I don't see that happening anytime soon.
Literally NONE of my friends go to the movies anymore. They all have Netflix accounts and Blu-Ray players and big screens.
Movie theaters will essentially disappear within 10 years. I would say it's their own damn fault, but really, they simply had no chance once home theater technology got good enough and cheap enough.
Opera's interface is a total fucking nightmare, and always has been. Obviously it appeals to some people, but those people are a minority. And insane.
I swear, Opera's interface reminds me of a bad KDE application, with its enormous collection of settings and buttons, and default settings that almost EVERYONE hates.
Seriously. If I was Google, I would block all of Oracle's IP space from accessing any Google service. And, hell, IBM's too, for good measure. Then I would threaten to block the IPs of all of Oracle's big customers.
What is Oracle going to do? Google isn't a public utility. Yeah, Oracle would obviously sue Google immediately, but that would work in Google's favor- they could say "Open up Java, and we'll unblock you."
For that matter, what law says that Google has to give you access to their site? I can't think of one that would apply.
Google holds ALL the cards, is what I'm saying. Oracle is too stupid to realize that, but that's no surprise. They've always been stupid, and they were stupid enough to buy Sun.
There are a TON of monitors that have 1920x1200 resolution. I own one. It's a 26" Samsung. MOST monitors are NOT running at 1920x1080. That's a TV resolution, not a monitor resolution.
Seriously. What morons are using ZoneAlarm? WHY would you use it, when Windows has had a better firewall since XP, and the Vista/Windows 7 firewall is even better than that?
Here's the thing with the legal system in the United States-
It's not if THE LAW is on your side, it's if THE JUDGE is on your side. The major benefit of hiring a lawyer, especially a "local" lawyer, is that he likely knows the judge personally. You likely don't. A lawyer will get things done that you can't, simply because he is part of the local "old boys club".
Basically, you have to hire a lawyer, because it shows that you are willing to "play ball", as they say. When you defend yourself, most judges think you are just being obnoxious, and aren't going to be very cooperative.
"God forbid if Sony ever decides that we don't pay enough for games and starts charging us a dime for every minute we play."
They have talked about this. It's coming, and Microsoft plans on doing it, too. They want to "rent" the games to you - without the option to buy. The game might *eventually* be available for outright purchase, but not until it is no longer popular.
The dream of EVERY software publisher is to somehow get you to pay them a monthly fee to keep your software working. It's guaranteed income. Looks great to the stockholders, and almost eliminates piracy. Never mind that it is PURE EVIL.
But they could *absolutely* develop it in 3 months. You could build a better-than-360 console that quickly using off-the-shelf stuff. If you have it run Linux on x86, then developers can CRANK out the games. And if you don't go nuts with the copy protection and licensing restrictions (and historically China doesn't care about those things), you'll have what amounts to a modern version of the Amiga- i.e., a computer built for games.
If that's what it's going to be, that would be pretty awesome.
If Obama and Congress want to stimulate the US (and, really, the whole world) economy, the BEST thing they could do would be to invalidate all copyrights and patents that are more than 10 years old, and abolish ALL "business practice" patents, and ALL software patents.
Say what you will about Microsoft, and Windows, but it's a STANDARD. Before "PC compatibles" dominated, the world of microcomputers was chaotic as hell. Every manufacturer used their own proprietary hardware and OS. Yes, that meant that advancements could be made more quickly. IN THEORY. The reality was, all the various manufacturers tried to lock you into their HARDWARE, and the price never dropped, because their were no clones. And OS improvements? Why would they bother? They were making money on the hardware.
Basically, we owe it to Microsoft for showing the world that it was the SOFTWARE that mattered; specifically, the OS. Before MS started licensing DOS to everyone, the computer industry was driven by expensive, incompatible hardware. It was an exciting time, but it was also frustrating as hell.
And, for that matter, would any other company be better than MS? Apple is all about lock-in. So was IBM, back in the day. Sun was/is no better.
The ONLY truly effective security measure is to hire armed guards. You probably can't afford that. For the average non-wealthy person, the best thing is a dog. Get a big dog that will bark when people open the door or break a window. Most will do that without any training, especially at night.
Security systems don't prevent break-ins, and if you can't prevent them, then what's the point?
It means "We have dedicated 5 different development and marketing teams to 5 different products that all compete with each other. Each of them has different strengths and weaknesses, each of them is mostly, but not *completely* compatible with the other, and NONE of them will actually be available for sale before Apple or Google makes them completely obsolete. Also, there will be skins available."
3G has come to mean "GSM network". Verizon is still CDMA. They're moving to LTE, which is basically the new version of GSM, and is what people are calling "4G".
Verizon DOES have, by far, the best coverage. No, you aren't going to get 5 megabit/sec downloads on your phone, but you don't NEED to. Nobody does. A phone doesn't do anything that needs that kind of bandwidth. 1 megabit/sec is PLENTY of bandwidth for a phone.
"We're going to fuck all of our users in the ass. But we want to make sure OUR asses are covered, legally speaking. So we are going to warn our users that we are going to fuck them in the ass. But we aren't going to go out of our way to warn them, because then they might not let us fuck them in the ass. We're going to secretly warn them, and then our lawyers have informed us that we can fuck our users in the ass until they ask us to stop. And then confirm that they want to stop the ass-fucking by clicking on a link in an e-mail that they will receive within a few hours, during which they will still be getting fucking in the ass."
"The only reason it's still popular, as far as I can figure out, is because it's hyped so much as being "the easiest" and "the most feature-filled" and whatnot, when every other distribution has caught up with and, dare I say, surpassed Ubuntu in usability."

So, for their $2.6 billion, Virginia doesn't get redundant systems? Everything is on ONE SAN?!
I would sue the living shit out of Northrop. That's insane.
It probably is too pricey for the Chinese market.
But they could *absolutely* develop it in 3 months. You could build a better-than-360 console that quickly using off-the-shelf stuff. The thing is, if you are TRULY concerned about the environment (and must drive a car), then you would buy a used car.
The amount of energy and resources and toxic chemicals involved in the car manufacturing process FAR outweighs any "statement" you make with a hybrid.
And if you REALLY REALLY care about the environment, you would carpool, or take the bus (if it's available), or walk or ride your bike.
What I'm saying is, you aren't being "green" by buying a hybrid. You're just pretending. You're a poseur.

Frankly, the cops have better things to do.
Buy a new laptop and move on. And don't leave it in your car, which is *unbelievably* stupid. Consider it a lesson.
It means "We have dedicated 5 different development and marketing teams to 5 different products that all compete with each other. I've been publicly flagellating myself for years. And it WORKS. Since I started, we have had ZERO hurricanes here in Iowa.
