Slow down your hardware/software upgrade cycle. Hire some interns, you don't need to pay them. And make lots of images. If a manager has a problem with his machine, re-image. It will be his responsibility to do a backup of his data. If not, he's not doing his job. Reduce the speed of your pipe. If you have a T-3, goto a T-1, that will reduduce your budget a ton. Use an add blocking proxy such as proximitron(spelling). Use mozilla Firefox. 95% of the web sites I visit work perfectly under Firefox. There are some exceptions, notably microsoft. The more adds and popups you can prevent from being sent down your line the better. All those images that come in popups, those are bandwith being wasted.
Maybe we can do a slashdot version of Vh1's I love the 70's, 80's, and 90's.
I did this in highschool. The school I went to had lots of rich students and about 2/3 of them had graphing calculators. I used to charge them 50$ to overclock it.
I found that the battery life is signficantly reduced, and if you go too far overclocking them, the cpu will overheat playing tetris on warp speed after 20 mins and will cause the plastic case to melt and the cpu to die.
He had been living at his cabin in the woods for 4 years before he got a phone line. It was only 1/2 mile, but 10K$ was a pretty steep price to pay and have polls sunk and trees trimmed. He used a cell phone but that was rather expensive and even with a monster cell antenna on the roof, if there was a cloud over the house there was no reception. He ran off of gas and a generator for 2 years and put solar power in. Just recently he had power lines run out to his house.
For me, it's cheaper to use a cell phone than a land line. Plus with cellular number portability, I can take my number anywhere I move to and not have to worry about giving a new number out to people.
Lock your machine down and CYA (cover your ass) with lots of banners, any port that you have open to the outside, have a banner stating the AUP for your organization. For the main website, a like should be sufficient, but check with your legal department. After you post the banners, start recording the traffac, as with your AUP, consent to monitoring is perfectly legal if they click OK or continue to log in. That way you have more of a case should someone actually break into your systems... or more of a case when you send a letter to the upstream ISP, they won't give a shit if you don't have banners.

I have 2 cars, an 85 BMW 325e & an 86 BMW 535i. Both are inline 6 cyl engines, 2.7 liter & 3.5 liter respectively. The 325e has 202K miles and the 535i has an unknown number of miles, I bought it with a broken odometer at 169K miles. I run Amsoil synthetic lubricants in both cars from the engine, to the transmission, to the diff. I also have the 2-stage rechargeable air filter from Amsoil. With the synthetic Amsoil lubricants in my car I go 7500 miles between oil changes. For the 325e I drive about 30K miles a year and that means 4 oil changes instead of 10. That means 20 quarts of oil instead of 50 quarts of oil that need to be disposed of. Also, there is the oil filters that need disposal so total 24 units of waste compared to 60(used oil + filters). As for the transmission and differentials I got 3 times the rated distance using Amsoil, so that is about 1/3 the waste as with petroleum gear oil & ATF. The 535i (with auto trans) is rated by the EPA at 16 city / 21 highway. With Amsoil I get 22 city / 25 highway. The highest I've seen is 27 mpg at 55mph with cruise control. For the 325e (manual trans) it is rated at 21 city / 28 highway. I get 26 city / 33 highway. The highest I've seen is 35 mpg. Other things I do to keep my cars running efficiently is every other oil change I do a valve adjustment, I run narrower tires 195/60/14 Nokian NRW all season tires) on both cars and rotate every other oil change. Also, I change the 02 sensors at the recommended interval of 30K miles. What's cool is my cars are almost 20 years old and they are just as if not more fuel efficient than most new cars (and all SUV's) coming off of the assembly line. By running Amsoil I also save time & money and reduce the amount of waste generated by my car. Better fuel economy means less pollution produced by my cars. On just fuel costs I save about $1392.25(@ $2.20 per gallon), or about 795.35 gallons of gasoline over 1 year (both cars total about 30K miles per year each and are 50/50 highway / city). The other cool thing about synthetic oil is it uses NO PETROLEUM base products. This means we do not need to import or use oil from the Middle East. If every car ran on synthetic oil and burned less fuel as a result we would reduce the amount of oil imported and less pollution in the air and in the ground from improperly disposed oil or capsized tankers etc etc.
I have a wife & todler and live in a 5 room apt (2 br, 1 bath, kitchen & living/dining room) and we use very little power. Granted we don't have a washer, drier, water heater, or electric heat. But we pay attention to our power use. 1) our tv (27")& dvd/vcr is on an outlet run by a light switch. TV's have instant on where they are charging the capacitors all the time. ITs not like the old B&W tv's that had to warm up. Also, the vcr drains power displaying the time and what ever else it needs to do. 2) The computer stays on most of the day (7ish - 11ish), its a 200w pwr supply and I've got a raid 0+1 on 4 drives. the 21" monitor which is an IDEK iiyama from circa 1992 is turned off when we are not using it. If we leave the house for a few hours we will pwr down the computer and flip the surge protector and turn off the wap, cablemodem, printers(if on), and speakers. 3) we use the toaster oven & microwave more than the regular oven & stove top. They use way less energy. If I'm only heating up some french fries and dinner rolls it takes less to heat up a small toaster oven that a large stove. The fridge we can't do much about, its ancient, we just don't open it more than we have to. THe more it's opened the more it has to cool back down. 3) lights, we have energy efficient bulbs, they cost $0.39 each after the rebates from effiency vermont. We turn them off when we are not in the room. 4) We only have one clock that is plugged into an outlet, the other clocks in the house are battery operated and the battery will last 2+ years. 5) we unplug the wallwart for anything we it is not being charged/used. The only things that may be left in to suck power when not in use is a radio down stairs and the one in my daughters room that we leave on at night for her. 6) the a/c in the summer time, I've insulated as best as possible around the window it sits in. I ahve it on a timer, it only comes on at night in my daughter's room to help keep her cool. It's on from 7- 12, by that time it's cooled off enough and the cold air stays in pretty well. We adjust the shades/blinds to keep as much direct sunlight out of the apartment and from heating it so we don't use fan's very much. Only when it is above 80 degrees.
So less than 200kwh per month is possible for a family and you can still watch a decent size tv & have a computer on all day. Even if we forget to turn something off or unplug something, its not that big of a deal. Plus living in a town that owns it's own electric company, I have never seen a bill for my place over 27$.

After viewing this thread I noticed that Clam AV came up quite a bit. So I went to their website and went to the news section. From there I saw a link for PC worlds response times articles. Here is the original article in german.
Clam AV is #5, but the AV program I use frequently is BitDefender, which is ranked #2. I use BitDefender because they have a LiveCD that is a remastered version of Knoppix which is a Live CD based off of Debian Linux. BitDefenders scan engine can also scan Microsoft Windows partitions (to include FULL RW support for NTFS). The only thing missing from my recovery pack is a spyware scanner that runs under linux and will remove windows based spyware.

Get a 2 way sat dish and run your webserver off the grid. I wonder what sort of gov't/business incentives this sort of aragnement(sp) can generate.
Other than a latency issue it would be a very cool setup.
Initially solar power is rather expensive per kwh but if the system is maintained very well it will last and last and the long run cost curve will go down per kwh.
IIRC posting, writing, or keeping copies of instructions for making bombs is illegal in the US. Why? Because bombs harm many people and do lots of damage. Viruses should fall under the same catagory.
Yes, virus writers are rather skilled compared to their counterparts script kiddies (and even worse click kiddies). I don't care how skilled they are, they can put their talent to other things.
The art behind virus writting is make it do good things in a few lines. Put that talent to work on opensource software. Imangine if some of these people got together and worked on the 2.6 kernel for linux. Maybe it would have been out 6 months earlier or it may have some more advanced features.
There are many things they can do, but the fact is they should not write viruses or even post the code/instructions/tools for making viruses anywhere.
Open source is the way to go for software, but it may not be the best way for hardware. There is far fewer hardware makers than software makers. If somebody doesn't like the closed source software somebody has already made an open source version. If somebody doesn't like the hardware being closed source then they can use a different peice of hardware. The only problem with that is there is a limited ammount of hardware for some applications.
Let companies provide us with their drivers in any form that they choose. Chances are they will be better than using wrappers or an opensource driver that does not utilize the full capability of the hardware.
I have already paid for my hardware, be it new or used. If I can't find a driver to use it under Linux or *BSD then I won't buy it. I can't afford a license for a competing operating system, as a result I can't afford some hardware. With intel supporting hardware under linux this give me and many other college students a break on our wallets. Now all we need to do is purchase our student copies of Codeweavers Crossover office (www.codeweavers.com) and MS Office if needed. I have a database class and all the databases are Access so I need MS Office to make sure my databases are 100% like the professors. I would use an opensource program but sometimes they don't save the database correctly.
So let the hardware companies support linux in any way they choose. It makes Linux look more attractive to the average user or company. The more users, the more (and better) software out there.
BitDefender Live (www.bitdefender.com) is a antivirus program that is multiplatform. It works on linux desktops & servers, windows desktops & servers, palm pilots, yahoo messsenger, and on and on. When windows is messed up it can quarentine the virus, say to a thumb drive so if the infected file happens to be explorer.exe its not completly deleted.
I love this program, it does wonders at a university with lots of mindless stupid users.
I haven't tried any of the record options but dScaler works under windows, I haven't tried it under linux.
My card is an old old pci card. It is an AIMS Highway eXtreme from circa 1993. It can only capture 320x240 but it is very good at play back. BTW it is off the BT8x8 chipset.
I've used windows media encoder and while on a university 10 mbps half duplex network I was able to stream from a VHS tape (coaxle input) on a celeron 533 with 384 megs of ram and win2K. I had upto 10 connections and no lag streeming audio & video to the network for wednesday night movies.:-D
I think video4linux works well with this card. Knoppix linux has quite a few video options including streaming video for many cards. The bet part is its a live cd.
You stated that she did not sign the form. If that is so, they used her information illegaly. If I am not mistaken, they keep records of all the applications. Like most banks they scan checks and everything else and keep it for future reference. If they are doing what they are supposed to then they need to call up that record and prove that she did sign the paper. If they cannont prove that she did sign the paper then they are liable for any and all resulting damages. You have damages now because:
1) Fear of identity theft by VISA
2) Expens of going to a new ISP due to the spam. This is serious due to needing to keep the former account for 3 or more months after getting the new account to verify any and all legit. email has been redirected to your new account.
3) Cost of having to get a new mailbox.
4) Recycling costs of all the junk mail in your mailbox.
etc etc etc
They need to keep the records, I'm sure they do, and if they say it was by phone call then they have that recorded.

I haven't purchased this CD and I don't intend to. If I am correct in my assumption you open the shrink wrap, nowhere on the wrap does it have an EULA. Then you put the CD into your computer, does it pop up an EULA? If not and if it put files on my harddrive then I consider that unauthorized use of my computer. They did not inform me of what the CD would do when put in my computer. Also if they do not have an EULA screen then it is not a criminal act to delete the files that it created or use sysdiff or other tools to audit your system after having run this program. If they wanted this stuff to be secret or protected by law they needed an EULA, otherwise its all fair game. IMO, but that doesn't matter to big brother, or to the carnivore system, or to those people whom say they represent you because you did not vote for them and have a big big fancy property in the "country" in Vermont because they were paid off.
for affecting you in such a harsh manner. I mean for me to mistype on word is unacceptable. I mean when you spell Jesus christ like that it makes me wonder who the Goddamn retard is. For somebody who makes it clear they know how to spell and also that they know the Bible so well it amazes me you spelled it incorrectly. You'd think a loooooser like your self would know how to spell Jesus Christ.
You make me laugh
The RIAA is going after users for "illegal" music on their computers.
SCO is trying to go after Linux users for illegal use of their code.
I've heard quite a few people say that once IBM settles this thing... if for some ungodly reason they should loose SCO cannot target Linux users because the damage has already been done. Can't this apply to the RIAA? They already shutdown Napster... how can they still continue to claim damages after having been paid for them already?

just my.02 cents... yes thats.02 cents... its not worth much but its all I have
I'm wondering what music came preloaded on her computer? Did she buy it from Dell or did she buy it from her son who spent a semester at school on an OC-3 connection?
It is not supprising that she used KaZaA to listen to her music. She probably heard about it from people or maybe those random popup windows came on and downloaded it for her and automated the ripping of her music to mp3 format.
She was within her fairuse of the music... untill KaZaA shared it for her. The RIAA is going after major file sharers, so how much music did she have and what kind of internet connection? I mean if she was on a 128K line she would notice that ammount of traffic slowing her down from just getting email.
When I run Ad-Aware on people computers at school I typically get 300 - 500 spyware associated hits. This is amazing and the student who owns the computer is like huh, thats why I get popup windows and why my computer is so slow?
IMHO there should be some way of regulating computers and their user, just like with automobiles. Should she be held accountable for attempting to disable file sharing? I tried to stop my lead foot from speeding but the cop didn't belive me.
People need to take the initiave and educate themselves on how to use a computer on the internet. Drivers education is mandatory in some states if you are under 18 years of age before you can legally drive a car. If you never took drivers ed you are a dumber drive according ot the insurance companies so you pay more. I'm tired of having to pay for stupidity of others when it comes to computers.

But, Thats not the point of the article. They wan t to see what the clones will do in different environments. How well do they survive, what kinds of deformities they will grow. And maybe even the secret to why this tree is so old.
Maybe someday we'll all have huge trees like this one to cut up into 2x4's:-D just think about how many 2x4's are already in a 4K year old tree:-D

IANAL etc etc etc but... 1. Contact your legal counsel. Several People have posted where to find some decent ones. 2. Keep track of every second spent since you were terminated. Now that you are without a job, unfairly terminated & unpaid you need to find a way to get paid for your time involved in getting a new job. Remember every second during your 8 or 9 hour day is accountable at the rate they were paying you. How long does it take you to read every single comment from the/. community? Thats time as well. And don't forget if you get paid for vacations & you have to earn it... the time inbetween is also time earned for vacation. 3. See if you can get your hands on the contractual terms with that company & all their computer use policies. Review them. See if you can get your harddrive & their logs for outside review. IF they won't then take them to court. They fired you and didn't give you enough substiantiated information in regards the their policies. The best thing that can happen is they wiped your haddrive clean. They deleted every bit of your logs. Then they just opened themselves up for a big big suit. They did not keep these at all... how do you know that they even had them to begin with?
Once it is all said & done they will reinstate your job for 1 month & allow you to resign & leave the comany on good terms so you can then go persue other career choices. All the lost time & the fact of being fired has caused you great emotional & financial harm. Your job suited your life style & now you can't get a job of equal pay to suit the life style. They must pay you for the next 12 months along with full benefits etc etc. Take them for all they're worth.
But other computer vendors do sell you bare bones computers, many of which without cpu's, or ram, or harddrive, or other important components. This is to allow the user to customize the computer to suit their needs. The same shuld hold true for operating system choice, send the computer out with out one on it. The people that want Microsoft will purchase that at the same time as the computer, or if they want Linux they can do the same. It makes no sense to sell a computer without an OS but it makes even more sense to sell them without all the parts included.

I've used windows media encoder and while on a university 10 mbps half duplex network I was able to stream from a VHS tape (coaxle input) on a celeron 533 with 384 megs of ram and win2K. I had upto 10 connections and no lag streeming audio & video to the network for wednesday night movies.

You have damages now because: 1) Fear of identity theft by VISA 2) Expens of going to a new ISP due to the spam. This is serious due to needing to keep the former account for 3 or more months after getting the new account to verify any and all legit. email has been redirected to your new account. 3) Cost of having to get a new mailbox. 4) Recycling costs of all the junk mail in your mailbox. etc etc etc They need to keep the records, I'm sure they do, and if they say it was by phone call then they have that recorded. ~ryan

I should study up a little more before babbling like that. But sometimes babbling nonsens makes you a little smarter ... not all the time though

for affecting you in such a harsh manner.
Explain my cluelessness please. ~ryan
The RIAA is going after users for "illegal" music on their computers. SCO is trying to go after Linux users for illegal use of their code. I've heard quite a few people say that once IBM settles this thing ... if for some ungodly reason they should loose SCO cannot target Linux users because the damage has already been done. Can't this apply to the RIAA? They already shutdown Napster ... how can they still continue to claim damages after having been paid for them already?

just my .02 cents ... yes thats .02 cents ... its not worth much but its all I have
I'm wondering what music came preloaded on her computer? Did she buy it from Dell or did she buy it from her son who spent a semester at school on an OC-3 connection? It is not supprising that she used KaZaA to listen to her music. She probably heard about it from people or maybe those random popup windows came on and downloaded it for her and automated the ripping of her music to mp3 format. She was within her fairuse of the music ... untill KaZaA shared it for her.

Maybe someday we'll all have huge trees like this one to cut up into 2x4's :-D just think about how many 2x4's are already in a 4K year old tree :-D

When it coems to winter time that stuff will get ripped up by the plow trucks & turn the road into a nast mess of pot holes. No way, they tried that stuff that lets water drain faster, it worked during the summer but when teh snow melted from the salt & froze in those cracks & then it got ripped up by the plows ... what a PITA

IANAL etc etc etc but ... /. community? Thats time as well. And don't forget if you get paid for vacations & you have to earn it ... the time inbetween is also time earned for vacation. ... how do you know that they even had them to begin with?
How long does it take you to read every single comment from the
They did not keep these at all
Once it is all said & done they will reinstate your job for 1 month & allow you to resign & leave the comany on good terms so you can then go persue other career choices. All the lost time & the fact of being fired has caused you great emotional & financial harm. Your job suited your life style & now you can't get a job of equal pay to suit the life style. They must pay you for the next 12 months along with full benefits etc etc. Take them for all they're worth.
IMHO

But other computer vendors do sell you bare bones computers, many of which without cpu's, or ram, or harddrive, or other important components. This is to allow the user to customize the computer to suit their needs. The same shuld hold true for operating system choice, send the computer out with out one on it. The people that want Microsoft will purchase that at the same time as the computer, or if they want Linux they can do the same. It makes no sense to sell a computer without an OS but it makes even more sense to sell them without all the parts included. ~ryan
In VT and other states, you get paid to purchase bottles & collect them. five cents for each one you return ;)
