Don't feel too bad, he is getting a golden handshake in the tune of $150 million at least. (They are still working on some stock options and HP just came out with a nice profit)
Erm, excuse me mr. performance specialist - but you are quite wrong.
The most expensive part of a dynamically rendered web page is the database, I'm interested in how you propose to gather the set information you talked about in the first post with trivial amount of compuatation for a site with a userbase as big as slashdot.
Lets boil this down a bit, assume 150 posts per thread, avg. 5 moderations (this is very low), avg. 100 red listed per user, that means, for each view you are looping 150*5*100=75.000 iterations to get the view - now this isn't a big number when you can do millions of calculations per second, however, scale this up to a user base of millions of users and you have a big problem (note these are small numbers, the redlists can easily grow very big, so can the amount of moderations per post).
Also, remember, this site has billions of posts (they hit the limit for 32bit ID's some time back) - you are searching through some very big indexes.
So again mr. performance guy, how exactly do you solve this problem with trivial amounts of processing?
I'm intrigued - everyone can claim to be a performance specialist, especially with vague answers like that.
Based on Slashdot, how exactly do you propose pregenerating information using smaller sections while still actually solving the original problem (sorry, but to me that statement sounds like bullshit)?
Crikey, that sure is putting things out of proportions - here in Denmark, taking a leak in public isn't legal, but you will only get a fine ( although, if you happen to be a drunk teenager, the police will usually also give you a good yelling at ).
Well if you read the rest of the post, you would have seen we are working on it - The small operators are fine with within the hour porting (the official goal is to make sure a customer has his new handset ported before she leaves the shop). the problem are the big carriers, it takes quite a long time for them to change direction, which is why the EU has set the goals within manageable periods for the big guys.
Its called number porting and happens all the time. Here in the EU operators are required to service a porting within a month - in the coming years we will be required to service them within 1 week, then 1 day and finally within the hour of a request, so no, it wont be a pain in the ass.
Obviously, if you do something silly and handcuff yourself to a contract for 2 years, then yes it's a pain, but you lie as you lay your bed.
If they want answers to such trivial things they can start by giving him a call or write an e-mail (or try google...) - detaining someone against their will for 3 hours to "learn" is by no means acceptable.
As someone who hangs out with regular smokers, I can guarantee you most of their paper is not used for pot, but for tobacco. If they smoked more pot than regular tobacco they would be flat out broke, and more importantly - wouldn't be able to stop giggling about it (OK ok, reaction may vary).
He is talking about the password hashes, if you have MySQL, look in the MySQL catalog for the users table, it should have a field with password, where all passwords are hashed.
Haven't checked, but they where most likely using MD5 back then for hashing, so it's a matter of quering a rainbow table to get the passwords.
In order for Samsung to buy out Rambus shares have to be for sale. If we assume they are willing to sell those shares, and it got out Samsung was buying, the price per share would explode since everyone using Rambus technology would be forced to ensure no single competitor sits on the IP. It's better for everyone to have one independent company sitting on the IP licensing it out.
Well first of all, most of Europe got the hang of English, so language barrier is a not really that big of a deal. Secondly, when you get a job here, most companies are willing to spend money on teaching you the local language, a new employee is a big investment, we (the company) want to protect that investment and make sure you thrive. Also, I think your view on UK police is misjudged, from my experience they are nice and friendly - not sure what you base the police state on.
I have indeed done my research on this since I have had to consider hiring foreigners.
And as I wrote in reply to your sibling, you are by no means required to spend all your money, you can save it up, earn interest, invest them - at no point do you have to pay anything more.
And please, please, please don't tell someone they are incompetent when you can't even work out what 17.5% VAT is in terms of total taxes. By the way (for both you and sibling) in the UK you don't pay VAT on everything, unless you only buy goods.
Let me give you a nice example from Denmark where we in fact pay VAT "on every goddamn thing" at 25% - Lets say I earn 100.000 kr, I pay 40% taxes, that leaves me with 60.000 kr.
At 25% VAT, it means 20% of everything I buy is tax, so lets say I spend all 60.000, that means 15.000 of that is an additional tax, which is 15% of the original, that means I pay 55% taxes total.
I'm very much aware of how much I pay in taxes, and I do my share of gibbering about it every month when I get my paycheck, but then I remember, this pays for my medical bills, for the roads, my education, for safety on the streets (milage may vary here, I'll give you that) etc .
Yes, the earnings threshold was an simplification, but in this context it makes sense, he is a (I might wrongly have assumed) skilled worker, therefore the earnings threshold is his problem - in practice you have to show you can take care of yourself, there are medical considerations, you have to be spotless on your criminal records etc. - but that applies to almost any country you want to work in, the hardest part of getting a green card is to show you can earn enough money.
In Denmark we pay 25% VAT on everything bought, so don't give me that BS, but you can't say you are paying 15% additional taxes, VAT is only applied when you spend your money, and you are by no means required to spend all your money on goods.
Well I happen to live in Denmark, so no offense, but I know a bit more about life in EU than you. And last round of hirings we did we looked at some foreigners (Chinese, not US), green cards where no problem as long as they made 300.000 DKR (about $50.000) a year.
Also, traveling to EU is a lot different from wanting to live and work, so not sure how that applies. The taxes here are 40%, thats it, if you chose to spend your money on gasoline, then yes there are sales taxes and environment taxes, which is why it's frigging expensive to own a car here. If you decided to take public transport here in Denmark (we have 190% sales tax on cars), it's tax deductible, so are loans, unions, pensions etc.
I earn enough to pay some of my wage at the 60% level, but with all the deductions I get I still only pay 40% (38% is lowest in my region) - and I don't own a car, so as I said, your statements are complete and utterly bullshit. But hey, lets not have facts come in the way of a good bashing...
Bullshit. Complete and utterly uninformed bullshit.
1. UK is part of the EU. 2. Nowhere is it a requirement to be a citizen, nor a spouse of a citizen. There are rules for minimum wages you must earn in order to have permission to stay in some countries, but thats it. 3. The 60%+ taxes are very very localized (specifically Denmark), and they only apply to the very highest paid citizens (you are taxed based on your income) - you should keep in mind that higher taxes equals higher wages.
But having a mindset like yours you should stay where you are.
I keep notepads with me all the time, faster for writing and you can easily scribble down random thoughts.
I would love a "*pad*" where it was possible to have the same writing capabilities (including feel of the pen) and same weight as an A4 notepad.
Don't feel too bad, he is getting a golden handshake in the tune of $150 million at least. (They are still working on some stock options and HP just came out with a nice profit)

Trivial is it?
So instead of caching views you are now forced to look up every single users combination of mods, no way servers could handle that load.
They do, they even come with a monitor you can open and close over the keyboard - they call it a "laptop".
Crikey, that sure is putting things out of proportions - here in Denmark, taking a leak in public isn't legal, but you will only get a fine ( although, if you happen to be a drunk teenager, the police will usually also give you a good yelling at ).

Damn, you beat me to it - it has to be posted on every single discussion until people get it.
Wait.. WHAT??
If they want answers to such trivial things they can start by giving him a call or write an e-mail (or try google...) - detaining someone against their will for 3 hours to "learn" is by no means acceptable.
I pay 350 DKR ( around $55) for 60/60Mbit here in Denmark. Granted I rarely get above 40Mbit in the evening, but guess it's ok.
As someone who hangs out with regular smokers, I can guarantee you most of their paper is not used for pot, but for tobacco. If they smoked more pot than regular tobacco they would be flat out broke, and more importantly - wouldn't be able to stop giggling about it (OK ok, reaction may vary).
Also, when you are already dealing with Hell, I think it's hard to get in good standing with the competition...

Haven't checked, but they where most likely using MD5 back then for hashing, so it's a matter of quering a rainbow table to get the passwords.
And did all that without even having to resort to pointing at other networks and say they have the same problem.
