  3. Time for Token Ring wireless... on Sluggish WiFi Connections Hurt Everyone · · Score: 2, Interesting

It sounds like it's time for some form of Token passing. That would prevent slow nodes from dominating the bandwidth, and would make sure everyone gets their fair share. Each node would have to register with the AP and then the AP would serve as the ring monitor.

How many RIAA executives have paided for a prostitute and thought it was a victimless crime? Things that make you go hmmmm....

The first thing I've always thought of when I think Unix, is Solaris. I believe what people first think about Unix is subjective. Some people will think of Sun, AIX, or HP. But I also believe SCO is pretty far down the list when people think of Unix.

The current company I work for has been going on for 15 years under various names. I was rummaging through some bookshelves with all sorts of obsolete stuff and ran across some SCO manuals. I think that pretty much sums it up.

It's getting to the point where I think we should all just turn our backs to these B.S. articles. SCO is acting like a spoiled child. If you stop paying attention to them, *eventually* they should stop. That idea seems to resonate with the fact the SCO is trying to win this battle in the press first, and the courts second.

  9. Unix History Time Line on Why SCO UNIX Is A Bad Idea · · Score: 5, Informative

This site, http://www.levenez.com/unix/, has an historical timeline of *ALL* the Unix variants. One thing I don't see is anything crossing over from SCO to Linux. I do see SCO taking some stuff from Linux. Maybe Linus is owed some royalties?

What is everyone whining about. We already have video cameras in every other conceivable public place. You can't buy a cherry squishy without the convenience store camera watching. Besides, the airline has valid security reasons, as they mention in the article, such as air rage. I don't want some drunken idiot endangering the plane and then have his case get thrown out because of lack of evidence. And for those of you worried about the demise of the mile-high club, they do mention the bathrooms won't have cameras (that you know about)!

  12. Patronage... on Funding Open Source? · · Score: 2, Interesting
It sounds like being an open source developer is becoming more like being a playwright. You need to find some wealth patron that will be willing to give you some money. Nowadays, it seems the patrons should be companies like RedHat. Let's face it, without Linux and open source, RedHat wouldn't exist. They should give a little back (they probably already do, but let's squeeze them for a little more!)

The only other thing remaining is to find muses for all the developers. That could be a tough one!

  16. The same mistakes as Microsoft? on Adobe Drops Mac Support For Premiere · · Score: 1

It seems this is the same mistake that Microsoft makes all the time, by alienating their 3rd party application developers. Pretty much the worst thing you can do in this situation is start competing with your allies. Let's just hope they don't make a bigger mistake, like pre-installing it on Macs.

  20. Trusted computing for the home? on A Critical Look at Trusted Computing · · Score: 4, Insightful

I believe "Reliable and Secure" computing is what people want for home computers. The term "Trusted" computing is usually saved for military computers, etc, that are following the Rainbow books' criteria. Also for systems trying to get a Common Criteria rating. "Trusted" computing includes two-man controls, the kind that prevent one person from launching a bunch of nuclear missiles. The NYtimes version of trusted computing means computers that the RIAA and MPAA can trust not to let you download their stuff. It might even include letting the RIAA and MPAA destroy your computer if you do (based on what some senators want to pass as law)

Nobody seems to like the idea of Big Brother. The idea of the Government watching all its citizens wasn't palitable to the voters. But if Big Business keeps building little parts of the "Big Brother" functionality into all the items you want to buy, pretty soon you have willing purchased your way into all that control the Government wanted in the first place. The irony is that because of all the campaign contributions and lobbying, Big Business is really the Government. It's the ultimate marketing job. Creating a demand for something you didn't want in the first place.

However, I've observed kids often view hacking, etc as something cool to do, without thinking of the consequences. While they're running this program, they should be teaching ethics and legality. Otherwise these kids might take this program as a license to hack.

A buddy and I lined up opening night for Star Wars II with much anticipcation, and hope that it would be an improvement over Episode I. (I grew up with the original trilogy, not to mention a basement full of all the Star Wars toys) Afterwards, realizing what a waste of a movie ATOC was, I don't think I'll bother to see the next one in the theatres. I'll agree the special effects were staggering, but the plot was weak and the acting was horrible. I'm beginning to think George Lucas has sold out (or sold his sole). Putting up webcams seems to be the latest trendy thing to do to get hype. Why can't he just write a good plot, get Steven Spielberg to direct (because I know he's always wanted to), and actually produce a decent film that everyone can enjoy, both kids and adults.
