Yeah... that sounds about right. I've ordered plenty of VMWare host servers for "consolidation" as well, only to have them grabbed up my new projects that were higher priority and had more potential to make the boss look good to his managers. Sure... A few servers get shut off every year due to projects that leave, but the actual server count ends up expanding every year.
I wonder if IBM factored in the number oddball projects that require Windows systems in their server count? Windows won't run in a zSeries VM, and there is plenty of software out there that is still Windows only.
Exactly. Most of these IT guys were probably the same ones who said that they were happy with Windows 2000 five years ago, and had no plans to upgrade to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 when it came out. I think that we all know how that turned out!
I'm personally not happy with Vista myself because the driver support still sucks, but manufacturers are being quickly being forced into fixing that for new hardware.
It sounds like Microsoft has their first unofficial release date of July 2010. Does anyone want to start taking bets on what the release date will be? I'm putting $5 on October 2012 myself.
We should also take side bets on whether or not Duke Nukem Forever will be released before this comes out. I think that I've give that bet even money at this point!
I'm curious... How hard would it be to create a jamming signal from the ground that would cause these UAV's to lose control and crash?
I'd imagine that the insurgents in Iraq won't be able to build something that sophisticated, but I'd bet that China or Russia could and sell it to their allies.
Who knows, they might even be able to figure out how to break the encryption that they're using on these things and take over control of the planes!
Good point. Maybe kids will be less willing to buy less of those Maroon 5 or Rihanna CD's if they know that the profits were indirectly being used to sue their friends who got caught using Limewire.
Hearing less Maroon 5 or Rihanna would just be a bonus:)
Bingo. Companies might need "jack of all trades" type people, but it's not what they hire for. Just look at the job IT listings on Dice and Monster... They're all looking for people with x years of experience with 2 or 3 specialized products, thinking that's the best way to find the specific skills they're looking for on their current project.
Of course, that probably won't stop your new boss from giving you a dozen Windows servers to build three months down the road even though you described yourself as a UNIX administrator on your resume. That's just the nature of the beast.
They also left off the new Core 2 Duo 6420, which is basically the 6400 with double the cache at the same price point. I was a bit annoyed by that omission, since I just got one for myself.
I thought that as well, until I saw the list of participants on savenetradio.org. They have some big names like Yahoo Music, Pandora, and Rhapsody on there, so a lot of people are going to notice this IF they don't decide to change their minds at the last minute.
They know enough about the security holes in Windows to have created and promoted their own Linux distribution called Red Flag Linux.
That doesn't prove a conspiracy theory or anything, but it was probably a good idea anyway! Smart thinking, and I wish that the US government did the same thing. Red, White, and Blue Linux has a good ring to it.
Cringely was pretty smart about how he reported this story. Although the 150,000 number in the headline is complete and total bullshit, it certainly is an attention getter! Lots of people are going to read this story, and IBM's semi-secret "LEAN" program won't be a secret anymore. IBM will now need to fess up and give a REAL estimate on how many people are getting axed.
I'm curious... Does this mean that EMI is dropping the DRM requirement on wireless Zune to Zune transfers as well? Without that insipid "3 day, 3 play" DRM rule, the wireless song transfer option on the Zune just became a hell of a lot more useful!
Of course, it would also make it a hell of a lot easier to pirate songs as well. Something tells me that the RIAA would never let this happen:(
What we REALLY need is the ability to post a story with words "Apple iPhone" in the title! That will be guaranteed a bazillion Slashdottit points no matter how bad the story is:)
Don't they make an x86 version of Solaris? Just set up one of your Windows machines to dual boot, and you're all set.
Even the most frugal corporations have old hardware lying around in a storage room somewhere. It shouldn't be all that hard to get a hold of another system if you're friends with an IT guy or a server admin.
Heh, I doubt it. The Mythbusters guys were looking for JATO's for one of their first myths, and found that no one in California had them. They had the use model rocket engines instead.

Hmm... I wonder if that's an IBM issued laptop that he's running an unauthorized software build on?
If so, I bet that he's breaking a ton of IT security regulations!
Basically, it looks like you can do whatever you want (within reason) as long as you don't talk about IBM or identify yourself as an IBMer.
The second IBM gets involved in the conversation, though, you gotta follow their rules.
I hear that they have some cheap vending machines!
Sure, it's no Google... But beggars can't be choosers!
Didn't try Googling "Bunny Ranch" yet, eh? :)
If you're a Windows Vista user, you don't really have a choice. It comes pre-installed if you want it or not.
I tried this on my computer, and the mailto: tag ended up getting redirected to my GMail account. Thanks, Google Toolbar!
:)
Once again, Google saves the day! Is there nothing that Google can't do?

Exactly! Most of these people are already paying over $87 A MONTH after taxes for their 900 minute service plans.
They also left off the new Core 2 Duo 6420, which is basically the 6400 with double the cache at the same price point. I was a bit annoyed by that omission, since I just got one for myself.
Kind of missing the point, aren't you? If the new rules go in effect, most of the Internet radio stations will go out of business for good!
Exactly. How does tripe like this make it on Slashdot, anyway?
I thought that as well, until I saw the list of participants on savenetradio.org. They have some big names like Yahoo Music, Pandora, and Rhapsody on there, so a lot of people are going to notice this IF they don't decide to change their minds at the last minute.
Like it or not, the corporate IT e-mail "standards" are Lotus Notes/Domino and Microsoft Exchange now.
Blackberries and Windows Mobile Smartphones already work with those standards, but the iPhone does not.
I'd imagine those features will be on the long list of improvements for iPhone 2.0, though, along with a lower price and more storage space.
I'm curious about the weight as well, since the glass screen is probably going to add some weight.
