I know, I know... but seriously there is no need to automate everything - store diffs/snapshots in user's home dir and teach user to which config file to point VM to open it.

I don't code perl myself but I really appreciate the ellegance of it and what have guys who wrote this particular one achieved.

  2. Re:Citrix on Experiences with Replacing Desktops w/ VMs? · · Score: 4, Informative

Actually, with VMware workstation you can keep base images on the workstation itself and load only user's plugins / redo stuff over the network. That's what we do and we don't see any network hit on 100 Mbps LAN. This gives you ability to run free (as in beer) Linux distro on all your workstations, which enormously helps with PC support issues compared to any Windows version. With a bit of clever scripting, KDE session retrieves all the necessary stuff from MySQL backend and users have their workstation (Windows, Linux, whatever) running full screen in no time. With good PC hardware (which is dirt-cheap these days) noone can tell that what they see and work on is VM.

Granted, for large network this solution is probably too expensive (we are .edu so we get really nice discounts on VM licenses).

Can be science, can be fun, can be both - as tagged.

I used to do this some 30+ years ago, while in primary school. Every day after school few of us would go to the corner shop, buy coke and pepermints and organise competition - everybody drops a mint into the bottle and whoever spils the least amount of coke, gets the next bottle purchased by the others. It's possible not to spil coke at all but terribly hard. We used .33 l bottles, though.

Partly true. Tiger and other top players must do something to improve driving, though. At their level, ability to hit green in 2 on a long par 5 18 sometimes is the difference between a win and a loss. Or $700.000 in prize money.

Bad thing for people who have plenty of money but not much golf talent is that they will suck even more once they start using really expensive clubs. I'm not complete anti-talent but I don't play or practice regularly enough to improve significantly. There are few holes on a local public course that I par or birdie every time but only with my set of cheapo second-hand ROC clubs. I tried friend's flash new R7 driver and forged Callaway irons - couldn't hit shit, whatsoever.

I'm happy though - there's only three things to fix in my game and I'll be able to play tournaments - swing, long game and short game.

I'm another one of happy customers, although not very fond of Dell. We have 3 old servers, about 15 laptops and 400-500 PCs. Hardware works great, (less than) expected amount of failed parts get replaced the next day, help desk / sales people (India or Malaysia) are pleasant to talk with, knowledgable and they understand that they are talking with professional, so I never had to go through 'did you install the latest driver, have you rebooted' and similar crap. Few times they extended the warranty on the spot, when fault happened just after expiration date. We also never had any trouble getting machine to test before the order is placed or forced to get Windows preinstalled (apart from notebooks), since we run Linux.

I really can't fail them. Just superb.
