I actually think that keeping informed counts as one of the basic needs.
Having said that, I'm aware that people with some other particular interests would have url_s bookmarked as well.
What would be nice to see is that, for example, 'Spiderman' search produces huge number of hits for "arachnology" - that would tell me that most humans are not just zombies without any investigative spirit left.
As a matter of fact, I find Slasdot pretty cool. It's informative (most of the time) and enlightening (not because I'm posting to it but because it gives me an opportunity to read some really clever stuff posted by some really clever people about the topics of my interest).
What gave you an impression that I had intended to differentiate myself in any way, anyway?

You are absolutelly right.
Statistics like this one tell us something, don't they? Average human being is mediocre who has very little interest in anything beyond basic needs and fun/amusement. People who realise this are able to communicate with masses, get their agenda out there and capitalise on it in various ways.
No wonder entertainment corporations make shitloads of money each and every year and fundamentalists of all flavours have so much followers - to name just a few consequences.
If you really are a proponent of 'the best tool for the job' dogma, you would want to sort out your web site (isn't that a tool?), so it doesn't ask me to upgrade the latest version of the most advanced web browser. Ugrade to what - IE?
1. Matthew Sczulick - making and distributing the most successful version of Linux
2. Peter Jackson - using Linux as a platform for his work
3. 100s of people (including me), implementing and supporting Linux
Anybody else who uses Linux saves lot of money in various ways - licensing costs, system uptime, hardware costs, support cost, you name it. I guess saving money counts as making money, don't you think?
It appears that all Microsoft were doing (.Net this.Net that) was to distruct competition from what they really wanted - introduce more anti-competitive practices through discount deals for SMEs, taking over Borland, bribing Indian govt, Palladium...If that wasn't the case they could have made.Net server released perhaps.
Is full-blown war with OpenSource/Linux/IBM/Sun... just starting?
IN SOVIET RUSSIA...The Two Towers get YOU (for free).
Whatever the correct answer is, the fact that/. moderators suck always stands. I am still sure that there haven't been too many threads in which 'In Soviet Russia' comment was more appropriate. However, I realise that most moderators are clueless, ignorant bunch, therefore Karma related line in the original post.
Coming from the same background, I actually found learning Linux far less difficult than NT.
This may sound strange but I have found an explanation in a fact that the whole logic of the Linux (*NIX) system is much better fit for me and the way I think. I guess system openness and the ability to try and do virtually anything with it helps a lot as well.
Microsoft were able to do everything they did mainly due to an enormous lack of cultivated and constructive innitiative.
Other states reps' argument about keeping MS on their toes by watching and enforcing rulling if necesarry is a very weak one. Actually, it's a load of crap, complete and utter bullshit and good sign that MS have shelled out few milion bucks where it was needed.
You can try keeping MS on their toes only if you take the battle to the next level, which is what Mass AG is doing. And rightfully so, since settlement was not the propper remmedy for breaking the law. In fact, it was big win for Microsoft.
Kudos to Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly, he deserves all help he may need. I'll do my part:
1. Show how neat Linux is to at least 2 people a week and help them run penguin on their PC.
2. Activelly advocate Linux and Open Source anywhere, anytime.
3. Keep the fight for Linux at my workplace going, despite the fact that some guys have already been sacked for doing so.
That's what I can do. Have you asked yourselves what can you do and have you started doing it?
You should have tried 'apropos network', which is used to find info using generalized topics, rather than names of the commands, daemons, conf files, what not.
Besides, if Windows help actually helps, that's a fair sign that user is pretty hopeless.
$25mil/325=$76923.1 per person. I'm not familiar with bankruptcy lows in US but have a feeling that this may amount to the average yearly salary of $40-45K for those 325 people.
If this enables WorldCom to pull out of bankruptcy, amount doesn't seem to be so huge.
If the game of chess is played between two equally skilled opponents, it all comes down to taking advantage of 'tempo', which would be described as an accurate utilization of the innitiative.
What Grandmasters at Kramnik's level play is bordering with art - there still is an amazing level of knowledge, memory and calculation involved but what distinguishes Kramnik, Kasparov, Fisher, Kortchnoi, Karpov, Talj, Kapablanca... from the rest of the players with the same title is (was) their ability to see and understand micro strategies within historically well known and explained offensive and defensive macro strategies. It is hard to play against such an opponent, even for themselves. They know everything and a bit more and the only weapon left is that one tempo.
White moves first and has the advantage of that first tempo. Advantage is not huge but in most cases makes all the difference.

You know what? Makes it even more hilarious!
So long, Karma, couldn't resist...

2. I am, there is nothing more important to me.
3. I do, see url above.
Now fuck off and stop trolling.

"XXX For Crappy Operating System From Redmond"
Replace XXX appropriately to get:
BFCOSF --> Backup Software
CFCOSF --> Commander
AVFCOSF --> AntiVirus, and so on.
If nothing, these ugly names may help in a battle to stop using said operating system.
You should have tried 'apropos network', which is used to find info using generalized topics, rather than names of the commands, daemons, conf files, what not.

This is not OT. Please moderate parent up. I guess +1, Insightful would be the best fit, although in this case I would prefer +1, Clever.
http://linux.gen.nz/supply.html
There's a list of companies that supply Linux preloaded on new machines. No dual boot, just pure Linux.
Too bad it's summer games. For the winter olyimpics mascot choice would be easy :)
That browser of yours sings pages?
However, may have even sounded appropriate...

Wouldn't beowulf cluster of these be cool?
What am I missing here? IOW or IAW?
That's insightful mods, not funny
Oh, wait...
Player I mentioned was Kuban :-)
