You don't really make any sense... You didn't choose divx because it required additional software, so you chose wmv? Wmv can ONLY be played in windows, and I think it requires a fairly new version at that. And now you're switching to Quicktime?? WMP can't play quicktime, everyone hates the quicktime player, and it's hardly supported anywhere! Now you've gone from a more or less open standard, to a rather closed standard which requires a special player. What was wrong with divx again? Or the open XviD for that matter...

For my local area, the real killer for Word Perfect was that everyone related the name Word Perfect with the dull blue screen of 5.1... While we, at my school, still sat and watched that screen in dispair, I happily used Word Perfect 6.0 at home, way before my school converted to Word for Windows (which looked surprisingly much like WP6). Later when I kept using Word Perfect, people would stare at me in chock, because they thought it still had that blue interface, even though I used a WYSIWYG Word Perfect long before they switched to Word. I guess I blame my schools for jumping on the Word wagon, rather than sticking to Word Perfect, which I still find superior.

Because the radio won't let me listen to alternative music, I can only find out about it on the internet (Or rarely on special shows in the middle of the night). But I have no doubt, that I will be sued and condemned by RIAA if they should ever catch me doing something nasty, because they can't fathom why on earth I would want to buy the CD if I already had the music on my computer.

So when they hear that people are purifying waste and putting it on the hill side (which probably isn't too sterile as it is), or... say... Watch Dune, where people use a suit to purify their own bodilly waste products for drinking, they go "eeeeew! Gross!". Well, FYI, your water has been on this planet for millions of years! Just about every species that have lived on this planet has crapped in your water, and then it's been through natural followed by artificial purification... What APG is doing is the same thing they have always done: They try to scare the users. They go after the weak, who think APG has a case against them. What they're sent isn't a bill, it's a settlement offer. Often for without telling the person what he will be sued for - you have illegal copies on your computer. Settle for this amount or we'll sue. There are ignorants everywhere. People with no insight into computers usually don't use them, and are therefore the ones who sit in high places (like judges and lawyers), and also the ones who makes the grand decisions. In Denmark (at least) we have these everywhere! In the congress (or whatever... Folketinget), in the courtrooms... Everywhere! And they are the ones who keep screwing it up for us (or for the record industry in some cases).
I know plenty of danes who don't know anything about computers. I guess it's all about what crowd you are in.

Well, they *are* only human, perhaps this judge has some, ah, non-Danish lineage. This would explain this temporary lapse of judgement.
As I said, we have a lot of non-geeks in Denmark. Not many computer literates would be content as a judge, and not many judges understands how even their keyboards work. We could pick judges who know about this, but those people usually have an oppinion from the start, and then they aren't qualified.
IMO all bad rulings are made because either the prosecutor or the defender hasn't been good enough at convincing the judge, or understanding the case. The judge ought to know as little as possible about the subject from the start.

One of the recent feature requests on the mailing list was support for CVS, so that daring, bleeding-edgers could use portage to install CVS versions of their software.
What I meant was that they the packages distributed so fast, that there's hardly any time for testing if it's stable enough. I hope that clarifies my (misunderstood) comment.

I used gentoo about a month ago (still have it on a computer I never use), and I didn't have problems with the mirrors. I only had to choose a local one, and I was up and running again.

I DID have the problem that the gentoo-XFS-kernel was broken, so I couldn't use modules. Fixed this by getting my own kernel and patching it, but it was annoying.

My reason for trying out gentoo was, initially, curiosity. I would have liked the speed boost people keeps goind on about, but I got nothing. So it takes a longer time to install packages and I gain nothing except more control of my programs, which I don't have the time to use (the control).

About the stability. Debian patch a lot of their programs to gain stability and security. I may have excagerated on the way, sorry about that, but my debian STILL is more stable.

Bottom line must be, that you can get a stable, yet a bit old distribution, which does a couple of things for you (I like the menugeneration), or you can get a do-it-yourself distribution, which is faster and has newer packages, but is a bit more unstable.

That's my experience, anyway, maybe a bit less biased this time...
