I took on online class, calculous, to fulfill a pre-requsiste for my MBA.
I had not taken calculous since High School, and it was almost impossible to learn it via the online class and the text book. To take the weekly tests and quizzes, I just figured out the patterns of where the numbers went. You could take the quizzes over and over again till you go a passing grade.
Give me a class with a grad student who can not speak english any day.
My wife's 2g just got wet and died this month. She took my old 3g that had dead pixels. Now she will get a 4gs. It is not that hard to understand how someone would want to upgrade,
Robot driven cars will only exist on special roads that do not allow on human driven cars.
The machines will line up in a specials lane and enter one at at a time. There will be a fence to keep out other cars. See the movie, Minority Report for the idea.
It will replace the HOV lanes that exist today.
Mixing human driven cars and machine driven cars would be a disaster, but with all the cars talking to each other and the road bed, everything would be be great.
Imagine driving 6 hours and not having to watch the road. Turn your chair to talk to the passengers, check your emails, etc.
My wife and I both drive BMWs. We have 355K miles on two vehicles, and (knock on wood), never had a break down or got stuck any where. One is a 2001 and one is 2004. Always getting to where you are going, and doing it with some style is worth every penny. They both drive and look like new.
Oh, yeah and we both own mac book pros, go figure.
Rack Space cloud sites is true cloud hosting, You do not add servers, you just pay for CPU usage like you are buying bandwidth. It is expensive and you can not customize it, but it always works and scales to meet demand.
It is not a VM, where you can install your own OS, Web server, etc. It is a apache server, mysql clustered backend and varnish cache front end.
Great for Blog hosting, PHP applications, etc. We do about 8-10 million page views on it per month and like it for what it is,
If I had staff that needed to configure servers all day, it would be different, but for hosting large dynamic LAMP websites, it is great and reliable.
My design firm charges by the hour. If you want a logo that we did in an hour, we can do that, in an hour. The prices is one times our hourly rate. It is not going to be the best logo, but it will only take us one hour.
If you want to have two planning conference calls, a focus group, then six rounds of comps and five final versions for various mediums, a favicon, a 125x125 banner and more, then it cost as much as time as it takes.
If clients do not like this, then can negotiate the world of crowd-sourceing, getting a cousin to do it and mocking it up themselves.
The problem with all that is that if you want a change later on, you are on your own, If you need a two color version for a silk screen, you might be SOL. If your cheap logo is not 100% vector, good luck putting it on a billboard or wrapping a vehicle.
Just as anyone can work on their own plumbing or get some cheap person to do it, there will always be a market for creative professionals who know what they are doing.
If you are losing work to the design sites, you don't want those clients anyways. Or you can let them get their logo from a contest, then design their business cards, website, make money brokering their ads/print/etc/, and create a long term relationship. That could happen as well.

I am posting on a powerbook 667, that looks like a brand new machine because it has been almost completely replaced under apple care.
I have had all of the outside metal panels, the optic drive and the screen replaced, under apple care over its 4 year life. Every-time I sent it back, i just swapped out the HD with a little 4gb HD with os 9 on it and kept mine, no worries about my data.
I really want to buy a intel macbook, but I just can't justify it with this one working so well.
Plus, I really can believe that the new laptops can not use any EVDO wireless cards, that is a real pain.
I use is for the base of many commercial web sites, utilizing the WYSISYG (FCKeditor) page editor and the news manager. It provides an excellent frame work for developing sites on top of, especially if you need a basic website with some extras thrown in.
By changing the templates or config to eliminate links to the parts you do not need, (example, links pages, polls, etc), you can use the user login, edit, and admin parts to allow your web clients to edit their own pages, saving you the trouble and saving them money in the long run. The templates are completely separate from the code, allowing you to design graphics for the site separate from the code.
Updates are pretty easy if you keep your custom code out of the main install, a process that is pretty easy if you put your code in lib-custom.php. The code is well written and clear enough for a person with basic php knowledge to hack if they like
The software is all php/mysql and run efficiently on most linux shared hosts. There are also a wide variety of plugins.
The forum and developers are responsive to support requests.
When I was in High School, in 1993, a friend of mines, brother burned me a copy of the Journman Project Mac CD-Rom Game on a CD burner at work. I think I paid $15 for the blank media, but I had a burned CD.
Last time I checked, that disk was still readable. It has been in box ever since.

I have been researching this very topic all day, and now this is in/.
We are looking at replacing our existing Nortal Merdian system with a Nortel BCM 400, so we can keep all of our existing desk phones. The Nortel BCM is about 5k with 32 extensitons and 4 voip phones and licenses. We will use a the voip phones at our remote office untill it out grows and then add a BCM 50 locally and bridge the two offices over VOIP.
Does anyone have any comments on this set up. I would love to get astericks in the mix, but I am not that smart:) and I will not be around the main office to admin it.
