  1. Interplanitary modem? on The Interplanetary Internet · · Score: 1

Im not very well versed in physics but I remember many years ago hearing that somehow you could split an atom or part of an atom so that you had two electrons and no matter what distance they were seperated by, change in spin of one electron would be duplicated by the other. I remember thinking that if you could alter the spin fast enough and read it reliably, this could be used as a wireless modem technology. I beleive the backstory of earth and beyond mentions this technology as well. Does anyone know the term for this and if it would ever be technologicaly feasable?

  5. Re:Well gnomes eh?, a little story on MIT Gnome Invasion · · Score: 1

From the site: The word hack at MIT usually refers to a clever, benign, and "ethical" prank or practical joke, which is both challenging for the perpetrators and amusing to the MIT community (and sometimes even the rest of the world!). Note that this has nothing to do with computer (or phone) hacking (which we call "cracking").

  14. In the beta... on There.com's Virtual World & Economy · · Score: 1

I've got an Avatar in the There beta and the economy has to be my least favorite part of the experience. Given, this is only beta so hopefuly we'll see some changes but heres how it works: Every player was given 10,000 there bucks to start. Theres a wide variety of stuff to purchase from the there store. The problem is that almost everything has the same price. A Buggy, a Hoverboard, and a dog all range around 9,000-10,000 there bucks. A Tshirt costs 2,000-5,000 there bucks. I have never gone to a dealership and picked up a buggy or even a plain old manual powere bicycle for around the cost of a shirt and a pair of pants. The economy in there is flaky at best. This is just a personal opinion of course, and I know people are already spending money on there bucks, but at least in EQ and other similar online games, there was a general value of virtual money felt by players, but I still can't figure out what a there buck's worth.

  16. Comfort Device on Dell Dropping The Floppy · · Score: 1

I think floppy drives have become 'Comfort' devices. I could use CD-Rs and CD-RWs for all my data transfers, or to boot when my PC goes down, but there have been times when something has gone horribly wrong with my system and a Floppy was there to fix the problem. I like that! Its not so much that I need my floppy or that some other media couldn't be used, but it gives me that sense of security that only a floppy drive can give. It says "Hey big boy, don't you worry! Ill be here when you need to boot to a DOS prompt". Maybe its just me, but even tho floppys can be flaky sometimes, for emergency recovery purposes id rather have trusty boot disk than relying on bootable CDs (Maybe its just me but my PCs dont always like to boot off bootable CDs)

Of the people I knew who played with me, some of which I still talk to, every single one of them felt this way too. The game is like a drug, without the part where you enjoy the high. RUN AWAY :-p

How many people actualy buy a lindows pc to use Lindows? It seems to me that most people I've talked to buy low cost lindows PCs and install a pirated copy of Windows. In the short term this benifits Lindows since they will profit from the sale of the pc, but in the long term it would seem that Microsoft will come out ahead, since even tho the copies of Windows are pirated, Microsoft is expanding its user base as Lindows user base dwindles.
