  1. Did anyone read the website? on Microsoft Sues and Gets Sued · · Score: 5, Insightful

This being Slashdot, I know nobody bothered to read the article before bashing Microsoft, but if you'll look at the list of defendants, they're almost all small time computer sales or software sales companies. Microsoft isn't the RIAA; they don't waste lawsuits suing Grandma or Little Susie because they're running a copy of Windows without a valid product key. What they do care about is companies who sell pirated copies of Windows to consumers for a profit. Some of these consumers even PAY for a pirated copy of Windows and are told they're getting a licensed copy. I know some people will argue with me that this is a good thing, but if you are a consumer who's been sold a pirated copy of Windows without your knowledge, Microsoft will even help you get a free or discounted copy if you just let them know who sold it to you. A lot of people instantly think it's Microsoft's way of getting you to rat on your family friend who's loaned you his install CD and key, but again, that's not who MS is looking for. So before you start crying foul, this sort of site isn't meant to scare you, it's meant to scare the guy selling 1000's of copies of Windows to unsuspecting consumers for a profit.

When I refer to a full OS crash, I mean a crash that renders the system unusable and requires a reboot. As for a firefox crash, it's just that... firefox crashes. It dies and I restart the application, no biggy unless I was working on something within the browser. I was only using it as a comparison, beacuse my extensions are crashing firefox I blame firefox, even though I know its not it's fault. Beacuse other programs are crashing windows, we blame windows, even though its not always its fault. As for the nightmare, I agree that setting up a linux box isnt that difficult. I could set one up and give it to my parents no problem. The trouble is that I had to spend 2 days teaching my dad to use firefox instead of IE even though I made them look almost identical. I have to show him again and again how to burn a CD or use simple applications. Switching them to linux would require a huge amount of retraining, even though the differences may be purely cosmetic.

Sometimes they make a good point, other times they're just too blinded by their love for Linux and their hatred of MS to stay objective on the subject.

  5. It's not all Microsoft's fault on How Open Source is Faring in Retail · · Score: 4, Insightful

Every time I read a slashdot article about linux it seems like all the Linux fanboys do is blame Microsoft for keeping Linux down. While I do know that Microsoft has forged some exclusive deals with PC manufacturers, I don't feel that thats the main reason why people arn't adopting Linux. I frequently build my own systems and have plenty of experience installing Linux, but I chose to use Windows as my primary OS. Linux is still lacking in many areas and if I were to try to switch the rest of my family over it would be a nightmare. Windows does have its own flaws but all in all it's the best thing on the market for most people. Back in the day of Windows 95/98 the OS bluescreened at least once a week and full OS crashes were constant, but with XP I hardly ever experience a full OS crash and I leave my system up for weeks at a time. It's usualy third party applications and drivers which cause the crashes I deal with but people are quick to blame Microsoft for these faults. A good example is my firefox install, which has been crashing quite frequently recently. I know this is probably caused by a poorly writen extension but yet I find myself thinking 'Damned Firefox'. I have a feeling that when a third party app causes trouble people are quick to blame Microsoft.

I think the reason for most of these issues to be found externaly is the sheer number of external users vs internal testers and the unique scenerios they deal with on a daily basis. Even if you were to take the entire MS workforce of about 60,000 people and have them do nothing but search for issues, that number would still be dwarfed by the number of people externaly using/inspecting/trying to break their software (I'm assuming here, though I beleive its a pretty reasonable assumption). Also, the way people use their systems internal to MS (even in testing scenerios) is going to be at least slightly different than in companys A, B and C. While I agree that MS should continue looking for issues internaly, it's impossible to expect the limited number of employees who are dedicated to security testing to find every issue in every posisble scenerio with varying permutation of systems, users, and knowledge. Given infinite time, a thousand monkeys with a copy of Windows will find an issue ;)

What I'd like to see is these female gamers get togeather and design a few sample avatars for female characters that they'd like to play, beacuse as a male I'm not sure what to picture when girl gamers complain.

From what I've seen the most typical avatars for females are thin and large breasted and for men are toned and muscular. Some game engines allow tweaking of the models so that you can appear heavier or lankier, taller or shorter, and more or less endowed/muscular but since developers have to focus on other elements of the game as well, often avatar customization isn't as flexable as im sure is technolocialy feasable. While I appreciate the extra effort developers go through to add customization options for avatars, I'd have to say that having a limited number of possible anatomical shapes for an avatar is more the result of technical and development constraints rather than the 'sexist' dev's saying "this is the only way women (and men) should look".

This is not to say there isn't some testosterone mixed in with the design of these avatars. I've played games where orc's and trolls were skinny and large breasted as well, when really they should be hidious. From a fantasy perspective this is definatly something I can understand women (and men who play more for roleplaying than breasts) complaining about, but as for the human form most people (maybe just guys?) are apt to choose a form for themselves which they'd most like to look like in a fantasy. While I don't think all women want to have huge bouncing breasts and toothpick waists (and again, not all men want this either), there's much more demand for forms that are pleasing to the opposit sex and/or the ego of the person playing the character. Since it's largly men programing these avatars, of course they'll create forms that please them. Woman think differently though and I understand, especialy from both an RP and a 'surrounded-by-young-horny-males' point of view, not wanting to necicarily look like 'typical' image of beauty, so why don't the girls who want to see this changed give the male dev's a bit of help and let them know what kind of avatars they'd like to see?

I understand the point that I don't HAVE to watch these ads, but my point is that bought a device AND pay for a service and in my mind that means I've compensated the company for what they're providingme. If they want to start advertising to me they could at least lower the price of my service. A good example would be internet access. Free websites use ads to generate revenue and pay for hosting; They provide me a service and I, in return, view ads to pay for it. This probably amounts to a few cents per page I view or at most a couple bucks a month for sites I visit frequently. On the other hand, I purchased my cable modem and I pay Comcast every month for the ability to access the internet. Comcast provides me the service and in return I give them cold hard cash, and quite a bit of it too. Now if Comcast decided that in addition to my normal fees, they'd automaticaly launch some pop under windows with ads that I didn't 'have' to view, I'd be pissed. Yes I don't have to see them but there's always something tugging at your periferal vision saying 'Look! I'm an Ad!'. Their service may still be great and I'll certainly miss some aspects of it, but you can't sell devices which are then both Ad supported and Subscription supported beacuse it just feels like you never stop paying.

I've been a loyal TiVo fan for years. I've got a Series 1 Phillips TiVo unit which I modded with ethernet, a bigger hard drive, TiVoWeb, etc. At first I was willing to pay for the box AND pay the $12.99/month to get updated listings, but recently I've felt like my TiVo is being taken away from me. The showcases and ads in the unit have long anoyed me, I wished I could tell my own TiVo to stop recording ads, but I let it be since it wasnt causing me any harm. Now they add the ability for broadcasters to tell me what I can and can't record and are greatly expanding their advertising, I'm going to cancel my subscription!

The problem is the business model is all wrong. I expect that when I purchase a device AND a subscription to a service that I'm compensating the company for the service which I receive. $12.99/month for TV listings is already a bit steep and I could subscribe to TV Guide cheeper than that, why should I have to pay to be advertised to as well? If they gave away the units and charged a bit for an ad supported service or if they charged for the units but supported the free TV listings with ads I could accept that but I'm feeling more and more like I bought a device that requires me to pay $12.99/month to watch 'custom tailored' ads, but I think I'll be sticking with the ads I get for free.

There are very few people who would publicly admit that they don't feel there is anything wrong with viewing child porn (even if they dont) and even fewer people who wouldn't shun them for it. But all that aside, I't also strikes me as odd that an organization like NAMBLA (North American Man Boy Love Association) is aloud to exist yet anyone even suspected to be viewing child porn has their house raided and could face many years in jail even if they never would dream of harming a child.
