People will do as they want. If stores didnt carry Grand Theft Auto 3, they would be losing out on a good chunk of change.
True. Case in point: Mortal Kombat. It was censored on SNES, but not on the Sega Genesis. Sega made a lot of money and happy customers. Nintendo made a lot of angry customers, but not a lot of money.
Money has the power to change business dynamics, and after Nintendo saw the resulting loss of sales from the censored Mortal Kombat, they didn't censor any game after that.
Personally, I don't think Microsoft wrote this. I think someone from Saturday Night Live broke into the MS server room and uploaded this.
...with the message you have been 0wn3d,/\/\$. All your bases belong to us.
Really, microsoft are masters at marketing, and to have such poor FUD makes them look very bad and unprofessional(from a marketing standpoint). Was Don Funk Drunk when he wrote the freelance article? I won't be suprised if Microsoft pulls down the web-page in the coming days. I mean it's so full of shit, that even Bob The Computer Guy will have a good chuckle at this article.
Look at the article 'she' shows an example of a file open box.... obviously her real name is 'Don Funk' and quick google search shows 'her' email address is 'donfu@microsoft.com'
Even more interesting..."Don Funk" is used in microsoft examples(i.e. msdn code snippets). Here is one showing Microsoft's repadmin.exe(diagnoses replication problems between Windows 2000 domain controllers):
I'm entirely sure Mr. McVoy could care less if you pay for his product.:) When svn (or whatever) is done, he can simply say "they had to use bitkeeper to develop it. What does that tell you?"
Well, I could say that C was used to develop Python, or C++ used to develop Java. In both cases the C and C++ were used as tools to develop something better/easier. The same can be said for Subversion(except that BK is not used to develop the product, but is part of the development life cycle aka configuration management).
"Why bother bickering over which is the most UNIX-like or UNIX-based? This isn't a pissing contest."
Not trying to be an ignorant troll, but what makes an OS, UNIX-like(Linux) or UNIX-based?
For example we all know that GNU is Not UNIX, but GNU is simply a free implementation mimicing/extending tools that are/were used in UNIX. So what makes a UNIX, a UNIX(aside from the trademark)?
You want to piss Larry more, since he called kernel hackers "whiners"?
Let's all chip in to get a couple of licenses for the core Subversion contributors, so that they can develop a better code revision system than BK.
It's like using their product and giving 'em the middle finger with a capital 'F' once subversion is done. Then you can chant, "we gotsa our own program now, fucka. We don't need you".
I'd suggest that Peng move to the domain [fuckaol.org] and tell AOL what they really think.
This is what is says:
"www.fuckaol.org has been suspended by Domain Direct Administration. If you are the owner of this domain, please contact help@domaindirect.com to have your domain reinstated."
In other words, the AOL/TimeWarner police are everywhere.
Try running make -j on source packages, not all kinds of packages will compile(case in point: SGI's Linux FailSafe). The submakefiles assume a library is built and try to reference them via gcc -L../somelib/dipshit.lib. Only thing is that dipshit isn't compiled.
Another question why you won't recieve N speed-ups: (but rather compilation problems) is that not all source packages write Makefiles properly so that you can do make -j2(run 2 jobs in parallel).
e.g. it will try running two sub makes within the same depth level at the same time, but the makefile hasn't specified a dependency. for ex:
SRC_DIRS = ha_fsd \
fsd_lib \... \
Unless you put: ha_fsd: fsd_lib somewhere, you will run into compilation problems with sub makes and make -j. So my question is how does distcc happen to fix such dependency problems?
AFAIK, samba has written makefiles properly so you can do make -j2, so maybe it was designed for samba(distcc is part of the samba.org domain...go figure).
In other words what he's trying to say is that fetching data items from cache allows your processor to achieve its maximum speed for most of the time, without it having to access slower memory.
Now if your working set fits into cache, then main-memory access is not your bottleneck. So now the speed depends on how fast your cpu can execute instructions and how fast it can fetch data items from cache.
Of course there are other problems which can limit your speed: pipeline stalls. Though a person should consult a book on cpu architecture for more info.
Some games are very addictive, and can trap people in for hours. I've had my school mark drop because I've wasted my time on pointless games.
Yeah, I tend to agree. I bought Final Fantasy X for PS2 about a month ago, and I have been playing it non-stop until the end. I was literally playing it for 4 to 5 hours from 8pm to 2am, after I came home from work. I've never played games for that long per day since my pre-teen years. I'm 24 now.
FFX is truly a mesmerizing game--awesome story(like watching a live drama) & action--enough to suck me in. I din't realize how absorbed I was in the FFX world until I finished the game. I felt like I was in a another world, another time...and the withdrawal effects with FFX memories...caused me to feel depressed and gave in to false hopes.
BUT, who cares! It was an amazing game! One of the best things about humans is that THEY FORGET AND GET BORED! As soon as I realized I was hooked, I went 180 degrees in the opposite direction trying to forget about Ffx and the enchanted story...I knew in a week or two my mind would be somewhere else.
That's when I met UnrealTourney2003! Awesome game! Twitch style play! But I would never get addicted emotionally, because a) its pick-up style and b) has no enchanted-make-u-go-to-la-la-land story. And it sure as hell made me forget about Ffx...
Only time when I give up games is when I get married...women are dignified and honourable individuals...you have to be a man to feel the humility vibes you get from a woman.
and if you really want to piss me, the telemarketer, off, all you had to do was spend 20 minutes on the phone with me saying how interested you were in my company's product.
Then at the last second, say "Sorry, I changed my mind". LOL. Fuck, if you were in front of me, I'd give you a noogie with my phone headset right then and there.
You see, most telemarketers like me need to sell as many items as we can, or boss will complain "you're not selling x products in y time" or "money you get==# of products sold".
As an aside, if someone pissed me off and then asked me to remove them from our call list, I didn't. Instead, to piss them off, I'd flag the caller "Customer not Answering" which would then add the number to our 'to-call' list again. And bingo, within a couple of days, they'll be hearing about our wonderful products.
I love sweet revenge. And If I ever got fired, I didn't give shit because telemarketing sux and it's a summer job.
This is off-topic, but lately I'm finding that more and more people have absolutely no idea what usenet is. I mentioned this to one of our new IT guys here -- a so-called "hot-shot" just out of college -- and wondered if usenet "sells DSL because he can't get it through AT&T."
For fuck's sake, don't tell people about usenet!! In my local broadband area, it used to be the fastest for downloading "stuff"!! I was downloading at 300K/s about 2 years ago...and 200K/s during peak hours.
But people like you tell everyone how great the usenet is...hell I don't even tell my brothers 'cause they'll start leaching mp3s all day long. But 'tis too late...I now tread along on usenet at 100-120K/s, and 60K/s during peak times.
Repeat after me: - People don't need to know the treasures in usenet - People don't need to know the treasures in usenet - People don't need to know the treasures in usenet
If you live in the Toronto/Mississauga/Brampton Area of Ontario, Canada--don't goto usenet. It's just a boring chat network okay? You're better off with your Yahoo's and MSNs...
I've always thought it would be possible to construct license plate frames that bathe a license plate in infrared and/or ultraviolet light, thereby making it "invisible" to speed control cameras (or, for the truly criminal out there, tollboth cameras), or any other CCD device. Would such a scheme actually work? Maybe put some sort of "diffuser" over the license plate to better diffuse the energy...
You gave me a wonderful idea. In Canada, we have a 407 toll highway that is free of toll-booths. Instead when you enter and exit a ramp, a camera takes snapshots of your license plate so that you get charged for the amount driven on the highway.
Anyways, using your suggested method, we can just blind the camera and drive free...and they'll think its just some technical issue...

We should find someway to convert these numbers to their relative fps speeds. That way, we can have entire threads, "My browser has more fps than ur browser d00d! I'm leet!".
UNIX developers to stop being afraid of multithreading and maybe some of us UNIX users would be able to take advantage of this
Do you know why they are afraid? In my view, threads re-introduce the problem where you have a bunch of processes that can freely share any memory at will, use any means of communication, and are a pain in the Ass with a capital A to debug/trace properly(without using internal debuggers). Try debugging a single process with dozens of different threads(i.e. threads with diff. entry points), where each thread has another dozen instances of itself. Now try using traditional debugging tools like strace, gprof(for tracing), or gdb.
In traditional multi-process environments, multiple processes are forced to communicate using well-designed message passing interfaces(pipes, unix domain & net sockets, FIFOs, message queues, shared-memory). Sure you can use share memory, but its done in a more restricted way(you share a buffer) so that it's not abused. Badly written threads in my experience use global variables and literally hundreds of flags(i'm not joking) for communicating what to do,whats the state, etc. Debugging processes are easier IMO, because all processes can dump their core, you can pause a process in action and see exactly what its currently doing(tracing).
I want to ramble more, but I'm tired. Anyone have more input on threads v.s processes?
