This looks offtopic, but I just wanted to put it here:)
The CEO is stupid(he shouldn't be there in the first place if he didn't know about the hord of false-impersonation style emails) and therefore a complete dipstick. Take he shambled suit, and counter-sue his ass for every legal damn thing you can sue him for.
Watts is a measure of power, i.e. energy per unit time. So, to ask how long it takes to deliver 100KW is nonsensical.Did you perhaps mean, how long can this thing fire for continuously, i.e. how much energy can I fire at the target in a burst?
Yeah, we play games like Mechwarrior too much:) I mean, if the weapon systems overheat, does the jet propulsion system shutdown? Also what kind of laser is it...PPC or just the boring linear 'zap' style lasers?
Another OS you could of got for $30 bucks if you had a commadore128(dunno for c64). Meaning it was easy to get.
As an aside, when I tried running CP/M...it was hell. I was dumb and stupid at the time(10 yrs), and didn't know why it couldn't read my disks...I couldn't even get it to open files or do anything. But that was due to my stupidity...now that I think of it I guess it was a unix-style os(i don't even have the book anymore)
Yeah, actually I'm worried that Microsoft is getting paranoid. When they get paranoid...the're gonna totally do everything in their power to get Linux down...in other words attack Linux weak spots. I'm not talking about M$ doing massive marketing for windows.
But I think what they want to do is bring the gov't on their side and use legal means to harm Linux. I'd bet they want to say that terrorists use Linux.
Already in the last week or so it was mentioned that as the Linux kernel continues to grow, they're prolly stepping on a very patents here and there. How do I know if M$ is going around to companies asking them to sue Linux for patent infringments?
How do I know if M$ isn't going to apply for new patents at the same time tech is being developed within the kernel?
might be not how much Video ram you need 32mb vs 64 mb vs 128mb, but how well games are utilizing your video ram.
By this I mean: do games use texture compression? If so what quality v.s. space trade off compression method are they currently using?
Currently you can do just fine with games if have 32mb and enable some sort of texture compression within the game.
Or if the games don't have _any_ texture compression support, but yet it uses a lot of video memory(and you don't want to reduce texture-detail), just go from 32-bit textures to 16-bit textures. This alone will cut texture memory usage by 50%. Also reducing your resolution from 1600x1200 down to 1024x768 while playing games will reduce video memory footprint too.
So to all those people who say, "64 mb will become obsolete", I say yeah right. I have had my geforce2 for almost 3 years, and mind you the UT2k3 still runs at ~35 fps average during heavy fights.
No, I hate the hungarian notation becoz of 2 things:
1) It mangles the name, which to me personally hampers readability of variable names.
2) It doesn't apply consistently to all types of variables -- namely aggregate data types(structs). I mean i is int, l is for long, so what is the hung. symbol for structures like struct my_data_t { int a, char *b, void *data, long len}?
Besides if your working on a large software project, you SHOULD a) study the header files b) have nice commercial tools to cross-reference the code.
For example, I use vi + ctags + cscope to cross reference code. If I don't know what the variable "foo_t hold_this_thing" is, I just have to hit ctrl-] and boom instance lookup.
What, you want to upgrade your Gameboy? Did you try overclocking it first?
Aside: I remember having an old Commadore 128D back in the days...it used to run at 1mhz(I also believe it was a Z80 proc). By typing fast into the console, the proc doubles it speed to 2 MHz!! But get this--it was so fast, that my computer screen turned all white everytime I used it!
No joke:) Must be extra useful in non-interactive batch scripts...
If you're really that bothered, JavaScript even lets you track their mouse's movement around and how they scroll up/down the page and then play it back on your own PC, telling you things like how fast they read and what they paid attention to.
Seems like Javascript was designed from ground up to be window-spamming and user tracking friendly....enter conspiracy theorists...
You might as well buy a used Apple G4. I considered the article interesting, but I just build myself a dual-proc rig for Linux a couple of months ago.
The point is, is anyone willing to sell a stripped down 400Mhz-based G4? Or even better: Can anyone find one?
We all know that Apple is not going to bring OSX to x86, so why not create a PCI imac daughter card Apple? That way we can run OSX too!(don't know how fast that would be though).
Under this simple and fair scheme the death penalty would be used less on murderers, rapists etc (who, really, only cause harm to one or two people at a time) but would be used a lot on spammers (who cause a small amount of unhappiness to many millions of people).
Really? How the fuck can you tangibly add all the small unhappiness, and consider it bigger than murder or rape?
Would you like it if your mother, brother, father or sister got killed cold blooded? Or if your mother, sister, or wife got raped?
I mean, do you feel disappointed as the girl who got raped?? According to your "theory", since the whole planet gets so much spam, your collective unhappiness goes up. Yet that would mean you are like a the Borg in Startrek, connected mentally and physically all the time.
Your logic of applying utilitarian laws are just plain stupid. I agree firm punishments are needed to handle spammers, but to discount other major crimes is just plain stupid.
I was glad to see that UT2003 isn't going to require a computer upgrade. All I had to do was downgrade by video settings (1024x768 rather than 1280x1024) and I got really nice frame rates.
I have a 1.2ghz Amd Thunderbird + Plain-old Geforce2 GTS. It runs ok at 800x600x32 as long as you don't put Hardware Voices/w EAX, and you keep some of the settings at Normal. I would like it if Epic could detect my hardware settings and give me recommended settings though.
Bombing run is a blast to play btw. Though I can't go online...no master server!
There's a difference between people dying in a natural disaster and people being murdered as a deliberate act.
Wake up.
Parent post was describing numbers dead related to the amount of coverage on CNN for the incident.
This is where Apple's implementation of the Dock is a bit better. The Taskbar shouldn't be showing open windows unless they are minimized. This is the way the Dock works, and even the Dock can get cluttered if you minimized a bunch of windows.
This is how Window Maker dock tab works too. But the real question is, who's implementation of dock bar is better: Window Maker or Mac OSX? I know they both share the same heritage(NeXT), but there must be differences that makes one better than the other, no?
It's ironic how MDI gets trashed and praised, often by the same people.
Tabbed browsing in Mozilla? Quicken's tabbed windows? That's MDI, too. And lots of people like it. It's MDI done right.
And I agree. When I used to browse with IE, I simply hated the fact that all IE windows would appear on the taskbar. I mean, it cluttered everything! When you have one instance of Word opened with 10 instances of IE, window management becomes a chore. Even more worse is when XP introduced the option of grouping; now you have to scan through X amount of windows using two-clicks(one to open the group, the other to select) which equates to longer 'latency' trying to grab the window I want.
This is why tabbed browing is a Good Thing or as you said "MDI done right". Applications know how to display multiple instances of themselves properly and nicely. A GUI's window manager on the other hand can't, as it's generic like process scheduling(if you get my drift).
the length of time required to make the backup, which can be a problem if the data being backed up is changing all the time
All the backup solutions do their job, it's just that while the filesystem they backup maybe consistent, the data--from an application standpoint--may not be consistent when taken at a certain point in time.
So what to do if the data is being changed all the time? Databases, which can be constantly changing from one second to another use transaction logs. Every operation that commits to the db(ie. add/delete/update/etc) is written to this log. If and when the database needs to be restored for any reason, the db simply needs to step through the entire log and redo the operations. Of course I'm pretty sure you can take the db server offline, and make a backup of the data at a consistent point. Then you can use the transaction logs to only redo operations from a certain point.
What I just described is what I learned through my database classes while in university, so take my comments with a grain of salt as I've never worked with a Real Database(tm) before.

And there's no risk in sticking your neck out if you know you are right.
Wish that always the case in legal battles, where for some reason more $$$ wins the battle rather than "I'm gee-o-geedly-do right, and I know it"
China made Karate Kid popular too:)
don't you think? :)

(sorry everyone else does it too:)Though I tried to make it better by adding dollar signs)

Karma monger...the 1,2,3,profit! technique is getting old

Even more funny are the top-10 channels from Netsplit:

2. iso-xdcc 2206 zerolimit
3. WAREZ-CENTRAL 1575 Criten

make you own conclusions:)
But you have to agree, a good story with good gameplay does wonders. Case in point: Final Fantasy X.
If you think NDA is allowed, then what if another company tries to sell you GPL software but you must agree to its NDA that:
You are not allowed to disclose the source code.
To me, NDAs are another form of licenses, and not all licenses are compatible with GPL.
Most geeks don't like it cause it's extra typing.
