A lot of this type of intrusion started when PC distributers bundled the OS with ISP software (advertising) such as AOL and MSN. At the time none of us though anything about it. We all got our new computer, booted it up and found all of this extra crap. Some useful some not. We complained a little but just got used to it. We didn't mind because it kept the cost of our computer down. Then the internet got big. We didn't want to pay for access to our favorite websites so companies started putting banner ads at the top. Again we complained, but it wasn't all that bad. Then the popups started, we began getting annoyed, but put up with them. I think now with this Gator advertising we have hit the limit. Now companies are installing stuff on our computer largely with out our knowledge, and getting paid to do it. Hopefully this will wake people up a bit, but I fear that most of the dolts who just want their email/internet, but do not want to really learn how it works, and the danges of using it are going to let companies like Gator get away with this for a long time to come. I just don't know what can be done about it. I would have to aggree with many of the comments already posted. This may be immoral, but not illegal. The only way to stop this kind of advertising is to eliminate the market for it. But as long as Joe User is uneducated enough to click on the ad, this will continue. This is all brough to us by the same people that actuall call those overseas investors who claim to want to give you $1 milion if you just send them $80k.

  11. Some unknown facts about oil on Iceland to Voluntarily Go Oil Free in 30-40 Years · · Score: 1
While I believe it is important to exploit other cleaner "burning" energy sources such as solar, nuclear and fuel cells, there are some common misconceptions about how much oil is really left. Here are a few that I have learned about:

    • Most oil companies only hold/buy enough oil reserves to get them through the next 20-30 years. This being the case, when you ask any oil company, how much oil do you have? They reply with, "about a 25 year supply". Obvously this is easily twisted to fit what ever global oil crisis you want to create.
    • In a typical oil well there is enough natural pressure to push up only about 1/3 of the oil in the well. After that you have to have to use more expensive means to get the oil so most companies cap the well and leave the other 2/3 in the ground. Most oil crisis figures do not take this into account. However when companies do have to start pumping the oil out it will make the costs go up.
    • No one really knows how much is out there. The reason the estimated amount of remaining oil keeps changing is that we keep discovering new reserves.

Spiderman is a good movie, but it just will not stand the test of time. I am sure it will have a few sequels, like Superman and Batman but the movie is bound to become dated. Think of how the Batmobile and the costumes looked on the TV show. That wasn't good enough for the movies, Batman had to be encased in armor and look tougher. Now no one really thinks much about them. Spiderman like most other movies is appealing to the fads of the here and now. Star Wars on the other hand is timeless. Lucas has managed to get people to ignore common stereotypes for heroes. Who would have though little Yoda could kick ass, Luke and Vader were not all that buff. I think this is the same reason that the Lord of the Rings is still popular in book and now movie forms. It is a timeless epic of good verses evil. Years from now all 6 Star Wars movies will have been made and this whole debate will be long forgotten. I am sure my children will still be watching them with the same excitement that we grew up with watching the original trilogy.

You should ask about the educational and the work background of the professors. Find out when and how long each of them worked in the "real world". Also do any of them currently consult on the side. Having a PhD is nice, but current real world experience is the mark of a good teacher.

Look and see the experience spread of the profs, i.e. do they have five profs that all recieved their PhD's in the 70's or are they constantly bringing in new blood every four or five years? Also look and see where their degrees are from. If more than two or three of the faculty in the department have their PhD/MS from the school you are applying to, this is bad news. It shows that they are not going to be very diverse in their thinking.

You should also ask about adjunct factulty. These are profs that have full-time jobs but teach one or two classes a semester (they typically do not have a PhD). They had the best in real world experience. They typically teach the mid-level stuff. I think they are the best people to take your programming languages from (they are also good at getting internships and job leads).

Finally if you want real brownie points with the department chair, ask about his/her doctoral thesis. I have yet to meet a PhD who does not love talking about that subject.

    Good luck!

Poling samples would be a good way to figure out how many people actually saw the movie. There would be some margin of error, but it would be a good indicator of how popular a movie is. Hollywood does alot of this in the conceptual phase of developing movies. Before spending $200 milion they have to figure out if that have a large enough audience of people willing to see a movie once or group of dedicated people willing to see it 10 times.

You have to first figure out what you are trying to measure. If you want to measure popularity, which many people are trying to do between Spiderman and Episode 2 dollar amounts are not going to cut it. It is too confusing, because you have to adjust for facts like, Ep2 had a midnight release but Spiderman opened on more screens. Hollywood is interested in how much profit they made on a movie so gross dollars is fine for them.
