I've had a Nokia 6185 for over almost 3 years now. Nokia has been a very reliable brand for me. I've dropped several times and had it slide across a parking lot once or twice but it still works. I carry it with me almost every where I go. We only got about 8 months out of my wife's Samsung. The thing just fell apart, and the battery just didn't hold a charge anymore.
I'd be careful with an open box Palm. Is it a floor model? People beat on them all day long. Make sure it's in good condition. You may want to consider buying a service plan with it, although that may negate the savings you get for it being open box.
CNN is typically my first choice for internet news, but I experienced the same thing you did on the morning of 9-11. The Washington Post was the least slow of all the news sources I regularly check. But when I finally got through there wasn't much content in the articles. Early in the day the articles basically said "Planes have hit the WTC, more info to come." There were no pictures either. It wasn't until they rolled a regular old TV into our lobby when we truly grasped what was going on. The average jorunalist is not trained to put what we saw into words, nor is the internet *currently* equipt to handle a breaking news story of this magnitude. I think the internet is great for your average news day, but if a similar event ever happens, I will turn on my TV before my PC.
(Qualifying this with IANAL) You have the right to request the maintenance and calibration records for the device that was used to catch you. You can file a motion of discovery to obtain the calibration records and often the officers training and certification records for that device.
There are just a *few* sites on the internet that can help with this:)

1. In a Pittsburgh campaign stop last month, the Bush people made local law enforcement herd sign-carrying protestors into a fenced off, "designated free speech zone"...
Unfortunatly a small percentage of the population has ruined it for the rest of us. There are protesters that show up to major activities and with the specific intent to commit violence. Tomorrow the World Bank is meeting here in Washington DC. Protest groups have already said they intend to stop traffic and cause other disturbances. I am sure someone will be looking to do more (I hope not). It is often the local city government that sets up the free speech zones, so that when things do get out of hand the police can control the situation.
I will support anyone who wants to stand on a street corner and shout his/her ideals, but start breaking windows and throwing rocks at police and you are on your own.
I agree with you... Just because UC is a publicly funded institution doesn't mean you can use their servers to post any content that you would like. If the link was to a child porn site we would be having a completely different conversation. The University does have the responsibility to make sure that the content on their servers are in compliance with the law. As stated earlier, if you feel that their interpretation of the law is wrong, then get your own servers and domain and run the site privately.
The store I helped run for a summer had a very high markup on soda. It cost us about 6 cents to pour a 12 oz. drink from our fountain. We sold it for $1.00. Putting lots of ice in the cup helped to keep our cost low. I am sure it gets better if you are a large restaurant chain that can buy in bulk. This is why it is easy for restaurants to give free refills on drinks.
The author makes his "list" of how the movies are like by over generalizing and braking the plots up into the most basic levels.
I aggree whole heartedly. You can do this with just about any television show or movie. Take any episode of Friends, Frasier, ER, NYPD Blue, (Fill in favorite show here):
One or more main characters encounters some kind of problem. This is usually due to some character flaw or outside influence (how's that for general). One or more characters help to solve the problem. In a comedy we have a funny solution, for a drama we make the solution more serious. In the end everyone is happy and the world moves onto next week.
I remember reading some place that the Greeks' invented this format. We use this format because noone wants to see Joe Nobody wake up, drink his coffee, go to work, come home and sleep. I can see that "entertainment" comercial free every day.
I give the Star Trek writers credit for making a large majority of the episodes and movies really fun and interesting. It must be very tough to write scripts every week that are completly new.
It is sad to say that there are some critics that walk into a scifi movie ready to find some flaw so they can say the whole think stinks. I never understood the phenomenon, I have just learned to ignore it.
Why is it that a backup tape can sit in a closet for 20 years, so some guy can research the first simley, but when my HD crashes I cannot retrieve information stored on tape less than a week ago? Murphy's Law I guess?!?
While in college I worked for the college computer lab as a repair tech. My group maintained the computer labs as well as the computers in professors offices. I could tell many stories, but here are some of the highlights.
Many students had the nasty habbit inserting their ball point pens into the floppy drive. Typically they would insert the pen cap first, but when they tried to remove it the cap stayed in the drive. Of course no one would tell us so the next five studens to use the machine would try to force their disks into the machine often causing use to have to replace the drive.
I had to help one student figure out how to insert a disk into the machine. The interesting part is that this student claimed to be a CS student trying to work on his programming assignment. I wonder where he is today?
One professor, who was renouned for his cluttered office (every school has at least one), had no place to rest his cigarett. This was no problem for him though, he had a PhD and could figure out a solution. Just open the CD ROM drive and rest it there. After a few days of doing this he managed to leave some nice burn marks on the drive tray, not to mention the ash that fell onto the keyboard. We took his computer for the better part of a semester. We kept telling him "the broken parts are on back-order". Remember the great CD ROM drive shortage of '96;)
I am in a similar situation. I did get my BS and I recently started an MS degree. I don't own my own company but I think our situations are similar. I thought long and hard about how I would balance my school work with work-work, as are you doing now. It's a tough question to answer.
First you have to be extremely organized. I filled my Palm calendar and task list with all tasks related to school, work and HOME (my wife doesn't like when I miss dinner dates:). You need to make sure nothing falls through the cracks. Establish a system and follow it to the letter!
Next, it doesn't hurt to have an understanding boss. You are lucky; you are your own boss so there is no negotiation. I have a very understanding boss that let's me flex-out early for classes and assignments. This is a must.
Finally, find a buddy. I am doing this with one other guy from my office. It helps a lot. I am also making friends at school. If I have to miss class for work reasons, your friends can get you through material you missed. They also function as a back up to your organization system.
I can tell you this much for certain, it is a great feeling to finally finish and walk across the stage and finally get your degree.
I wonder how it alerts the assembler they are doing it wrong.
In some far off corner of Virginia: Danger... Danger Will Robinson!
You have failed to properly assemble the seat module. Posterior collision with floor is imminent!
This is a great invention. I will finally be able to surf the net in peace without my manager pestering me about doing work. After all, how will he know? I could just waste my day away on/. Wait... I do that already!
I would have to aggree. There is no good replacement for strong physical security. If something is so super secret, don't work on it out in the open. I use an access card to gain entry to my work space. When we have visitors, we simply lock out our screens. Generally we do not give "random" people access to our work stations. I think wide spread use of these could give workers a false sense of security.
On the other hand, this is a very cool technology and I am sure there are some instances where they could be used on a limited basis. One use could be in the lobby of an office building. It would allow security guards to check a visitors or employees access records without showing the whole screen. I am sure the U.S. Gov't could also find some uses for these as well.
I would have to aggree. Mach 7.6 would be a bit too much for your average passenger. Fighter jet pilots train for hours on how to keep concious, they are also in excellent physical shape and have a lot of equipment to help them.
Even if you did find a few willing souls, would it be enough to make any kind of profit? If I am not mistaken, it costs about $8,000 USD to fly on the Concord and they still have problems making money.
I might as well jump on the banwagon. I am anouncing today that I will be seeking the patent rights to the.html and.txt file formats. I will make you all pay dearly!;)
I would have to agree with your scenairo. Most of the people out there are flustered enough with that "tricky" mouse but I still think this a step in the right direction. If Linux can get enough market share, the software/hardware suppliers will have to pay attention. Hopefully stores like Best Buy and Circuit City will offer more OS options on the premise of "If Wal-Mart can do it, why can't we!" Even a 5% share of the average user market may be enough to get something started.
I do not pretend to to be an expert in orbital mechanics (believe me, I work with a few and they talk like Stephen Hawking some days:) but this net might hold some merrit. We have satellites that hold very precise orbits. Would it be that hard to hold four to six satellites in the same plane? I guess the question is how big would it need to be, to be effective? If it was a couple hundred meters accross it may be enough to clean up the nusance stuff that NASA cannot track easily. We could just let it go like one of those automatic pool vaccumes. When the net is full, we could bundle it and send it into a lower orbit where it will burn up.

Do they pay for you to be off of work for 6 months so you can go for the training? My wife probably wouldn't let me go anyway :(

You are absolutly right. I still use my Tandy 8086! Who could possibly need more than 640K? ;)
I create element 120 in my kitchen sink. Look for my research to be published next month. I plan to call it slashdotium.
