A Japonese compnay has offered to dig a tunnel between Russia and the US for half-price. It would be very cool to travel from New York to England by rail the long way!
I dare say, seeing how this is slashdot, where most commentors don't seem to actually read the story, having a proven-knowledgable-about-the-subject-matter person tell you in a first post that the story is actually good is, indeed, worthy of modding "informative". It is most certainly NOT redundant, or troll, or offtopic, or flamebait.
What I wonder is, will there be consequences for ECMA, after approving a substantially flawed, vendor-locked specification as a standard. Quite obviously they failed to do the review required for approving a standard, so in my opinion they disqualified as a "category I liaison", a status they need for bringing standards to the fast-track procedure. Do ISO/IEC think the same way?
I love it when people are being pedantic. I'd have modded you up if it weren't for the lack of modpoints.
That aside, the loudnesswar has been lost for those of us who, like me, like to actually listen to music. Apart from the afore-mentioned insane bass-blasting-from-a-car thing, apparently it now is hip to walk around with your cellphone spewing out music in utterly distorted tin-can-speaker fashion because you want the world to hear whatever it is you're not listening to. If THAT kind of puke is what today's youth deems acceptable soundquality these days, they'll go with anything.
I love cast iron. Frying pans, cooking pans, pans to simmer stuff in, all cast iron.
Also, as one of the parents said, recipes are guidelines. When I work by recipes, it usually means, read the recipe, get the ingredients, and from the moment you start cooking, don't look at the recipe again. The more you cook, the better you get at knowing what you do, so a recipe is inspiration, but never the holy grail. My favorite cookbook is Artusi, written in the 1870s or thereabouts, whose recipes are quite erratic at times. Does give me great ideas though.
Also, and this cannot be stressed enough: GET FRESH INGREDIENTS! Grow your own herbs goddamnit. No supermarketstuff, go to a GOOD butcherstore, and vegetablestore, etc. Really.

Apparently you can't ever mention google again. This might mean you can only wear your t-shirt at home, with the curtains closed and no-one around.
Tom Waits is the epitome of consistency; everything he ever did sucks so bad I consider him a risk to my sanity. His albums are themed, all right, but should probably be illegal under the Geneva Conventions.
And, yes, I swear to whatever deity might be out there -- we really did have one guy who lifted his mouse up and pointed at the screen!!
Some 6 or 7 years ago the Dutch prime-minister at the time was shown on national TV doing just that - pointing his mouse at the screen and wondering why it did not work. Pretty hilarious, in a way.
Actually, do DO try to use their monopoly to gain a monopoly in other area's. What people fail to see is that it is not about the mediaplayer, it is about content. Contentproviders know that most desktops (ie windows desktops) have windows mediaplayer installed, and must guess about other players. Therefore they will provide content in windows mediaplayer format, which is proprietary. This way, MS will get a big say in what content will be available, who can get to see/hear it (WMF is riddled with DRM), and who gets to provide content (You don't play by MS's rules, you don't get a license). User-stupidity, though abundant, has nothing to do with it. MS working towards a de facto veto in the content industry does.
Also, when was the last time you've heard wine retailers sell you white wine - which have less tannins then most reds - that are designed to be stored long term? You can probably list some exceptions, but those are the very rare ones.
Actually, most whites from the Burgundy-area And some Cote-du-Rhones are meant to age. Try a 1 year old Sancerre and compare it with a (correctly aged) 15 year old one.
Same goes for most of the extra sweet white wines, often referred to as dessertwine. Some of those can age over a 100 years and still improve.
So, in short, most whites are not to be stored but to say that the exceptions are few and between is very wrong.
cheers.
Other way around dude. The culture stories are by Iain M. Banks, the other stuff by Iain Banks.
thank you. that was a most informative link.
iMARS? They're running Macs?
Been a long time since I had to look up an abreviation, and a first casual google did not yield any useful results for IPHBT. Pretty impressive.

reply to the story (bottom right of the story).

Should that not be "stream south from"?
The male refractionary period.
It is consistent in that every other horizontal scrollbar scrolls left when turning the mousewheel up and right when turning it down.
I am NOT unwashed. I showered this morning.
they DO, not do DO. I should use the previewbutton.

Go check http://www.qnx.com/ to see a true microkernelarchitecture. Very nice, very fast RTOS.
