Intel going to produce AMD clones? After Intel adapting AMD's favourite memory architecture (DDR instead of Rambus). Is AMD the new chip architecture leader? Will it be recognized as such?
While it's impossible to tell from this shitty article what was actually observed, it's clear that this super-low-temperature experiment has nothing to do with high-Tc superconductivity. At least not more than a million previous experiments; a more likely candidate would have been experiments done long ago on superfluid 3He.
Check out the benchmarks. A Celeron is much slower than a P4. For most applications, the slowest Athlon you can buy will be faster (and consume less power).
This complete and utter BS is. As a native German speaker confirm I that although verbs to follow at the end tend not it possible to construct a sentence that to finish half an hour it takes is can.
Since today is my RTFA day, I came across this nice excerpt: In addition to Torvalds and Stallman, SCO told the U.S. District Court in Utah it would issue subpoenas to... software maker Novell...
Quite possibly, Novell will not be amused. The next logical move by SCO would be to terminate Novell's unix licence. Oh wait...
a healthy ecosystem cannot. Preserving our only earth does not have an intrinsic cost. It's only a question of priorities if every familily needs their third SUV or if the money is spent on projects like cutting down on air pollution or cleaning poisened rivers. In both cases, workers get their salaries and nobody has to starve. In fact, usually a larger portion of cost seems to be associated with personnel for ecological projects than either for consumer products or fuel.
[England's] murder rate higher than DC's is a shameless lie (see other replies). It's even much smaller than the average rate for the US and falling (see other replies).
Would you only exclude the directories that you really want to hide (so they are easily found by looking up robots.txt) or would you add a lot of trash so that it looks like a bad script? The question is, of course, what will the robots.txt file look like tomorrow? Errors should get fixed soon.
As others have observed, some of the excluded directories do exist.
In five minutes I was able to find three books that talked about findings first listed in two of my own published scientific papers, yet these books did not cite me, or anyone else, as the source of that information. My lawyer is currently preparing three letters.
...that not everybody reads your papers? You should definitely contact the authors first. They might have had the same ideas by themselves.
This is what the guy with the stupid signature (poll about Haiffa bombing) cannot understand. You can only condemn people who are given options (still, I would try to stop attacks on civilians).
Conversely, I can hardly think of a definition of the term "terrorist" which does not include Ariel Sharon (and several other politicians).
10 Mbit/s via more or less electrostatic fields? Excuse me. Maybe one can use humans as antennae, but imho (as a physicist) the resulting radiation has nothing to do with natural body electric fields.
If you RTFA, you will/would see that Ginzburg got the prize for contributions to low-temperature superconductivity made in the 1950s. And you will hopefully agree that superconductivity as such is quite important.
On your other note: Personally, I only know Leggett (from my time at the UIUC). In my view, he represents what one can admire in a theoretician; in some sense, he is above this world: shy with other people and bold in developing new theories (and very british). Pure experimentalists may be useful, but without theoretical grasp they are no great physicists. As a physics PhD in condensed matter theory I am not impartial, of course.
How do you define POW? What war? My understanding is that these terms are defined case by case by the US government. The times when wars started by declaration and ended by a treaty unfortunately seem to be over.
Regarding your second point: my primary sources are personal US contacts, US newspapers (e.g. Washington Post), US news sites (e.g. CNN), and US community web sites (e.g. Slashdot). If anything, I am not a consumer but an agent of European anti-present-US-politics propaganda.
Finally, I find Martin Niemoller's famous quote
fitting:
"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."
My point is not that one should not bring terrorists to justice, but that it cannot be ignored or tolerated when certain groups are deprived of basic rights and legal guarantees.

May I offer one single data point: I am a German physics PhD, I have several offers for working at US universities which would be good for my career. In fact, I have been to the US before, got a Master of Science at the UIUC some 5 years ago, and loved it.
But this time I am not coming. I have a family now and will not move to a country where people are held without trial for years (think: Guantanamo).
My hope is that the situation will improve with the next presidential elections. I can't believe that Americans will not defend their freedom.
Europe is not one of many countries getting involved. It is a continent and union of countries with a very successfull commercial space program: ESA. Ariane 1 started in 1979; Ariane 4 was just discontinued after 113 (out of 116) successfull launches with payloads up to 4700 kg. 19 percent of customers for Ariane 4 were from the US. Brazil is trying to get into a business (satellite launches) in which the US, Russia, and Europe are for decades.
According to the article, several completely innocent students have been jailed due to malfunction of SEVIS. In my view this is absolutely unacceptable; the responsible people are criminals and should go to jail instead. Since arrested students never know if they are scheduled for some years in Guantanamo, they might even resist and people get killed. The US can and should follow their constitution.
Then it is not binary (but instead some 25-system if the possibilities are nothing or one of 24 colors). An archeologist trying to be a mathematician is apparently worse than vice versa.
We (theoretical physics group with some 6-8 scientists) considered signing up for RHN. The problem: we have regularly used Linux desktop machines, dual-boot WinXP/Linux machines, some Linux laptops and separate Web and NFS machines, let alone our 16x2 CPU Debian cluster. RHN would have made sense only for all machines (except the cluster). However, 12x120 Dollar per year for enterprise RHN is too much and doesn't seem fair since the required support is only very weakly dependent on the number of machines. Therefore, we have just switched to SuSE Linux where the automatic updates are free and 2 months of support can be bought at the price of a single copy (60 Dollar). At 400 Dollar per year for RHN we would have kept Red Hat.
Obviously, as soon as Red Hat offered significant volume discounts, the incentive for underlicensing would be much reduced.
According to this
(German) article, volume licensing at a discount is available. I would assume 50 Euro per seat.
Note that SuSE generally offers university discounts of about 30 percent.

16. doesn't matter
Cheers from a theoretical condensed matter physicist (correlated electron systems) ;-)

You can order a maglev from Siemens, Germany, at any time. Provided you have a deep pocket.

By the way, I just happen to have mod points. Found a comment more constructive, though.

How does your contribution relate to the specific subject of the parent post, the impact on blind people?

History of Ariane 4
In an ideal world, maybe. In this world, intruding your life a little can translate into several years on Guantanamo.
