LOL. I've had girlfriends who thought playing games was a waste of time, they didn't last long, my current (of 1 & 1/2 years) is quite happy for me to play games, as long as its not too much.

Discovering girls doesn't mean gaming has to die. However I did go from being a top notch FPS player to a barely okay one. ;)

As for games. The Half life mods Counter strike and Day of defeat are the two games in the last 5 years that have kept me coming back. Good enough graphics, with good game play. All in all they provide the best online experience, they are fun whether you're playing for 15 minutes, or all night long. As long as you can find a well controlled server (i.e. one where the idiots are kicked off quickly).

And then of course there is civalisation. Civ 1 for many years, then Civ 3. I still play Civ 3 or Free Civ every few months.

I always got the feeling the life expectancy, or rather the lack there of, of old AMD's was the fact that they ran so hot. While Intels ran nice and cool (well cooler).

With the addition of the AMD64 though, the tables seem to have turned. They run much cooler, while the competing p4's seem to have serious issues. Will be interesting to see in a few years which of the current generation have the ability to last.

That said, those old intel P2 and P3's just seem to keep going and going.

In the end, any model that results in the creator/industry getting money will probably result in people trying to bypass it.

Slap an advert into a downloadable movie, someone will remove it. Do some form of micropayments, people will still go for the free option.

While I'm sure they will still be able to make money from various methods, I feel that the number of bands/movies/whatever will begin to decrease as their respective industries have to focus more and more on a select few to make their profit.

Oh thats true, but you have to ask whether its actually what you really want? It will lead to several things. Innovation in ways to get advertising on you screen (something we don't want, since most of these innovations are worse than the stock standard banner ad), or generating income through merchandising.

Unless of course you know of some innovation that will allow small entertaining sites to make some money without acting like the movie business. But of course you don't actually point out any real innovations, just that they might be there in the future...

I know that cell phone service in some countries is apparently bad, but here in the 3rd world (South Africa) our cell phone service is very good, so I'd assume that most of the 1st world does have good service.

Anyway, the point is, even if ipod sales grow and grow, I'm willing to bet mp3 playing phones will grow more (especially outside of the US). The end result will be that the ipod will become just another player, a cool one admittedly, but definitely holding a smaller percentage of the market than it does now.

To bring this back to the original topic, I think Ballmer may be right. When longhorn comes out and MSN search is embedded in every aspect of the OS (I assume they will do this), google may find their market share dropping drastically. It all comes down to the fact that the vast majority of people (ie. not the /. crowd) will use whatever is there, be it the mp3 player that came with their phone, or the search that came with their OS.
