First off, I assume you don't think this is EVERYTHING that is likely new in 10.3.
Secondly, some of these things do look to be significantly new..... as far as look and feel, of course it's the same.... what would be the point in dramatically changing the look and feel?
Feature-wise though, Expose looks like a very nice addition, as are labels.... not sure what Folder Actions are, but they could also be an interesting addition..... the new drive view also looks like it could be an improvement.
Some of the screenshots of course don't seem different at all, so I'm not sure why they posted them (the main desktop screenshot in particular, although a lot of it is "censored").... but the Mail.app inbox screenshot and the System Preferences screenshot look fairly standard.
Anyway, the point is, this hardly seems to be everything that 10.3 will have, feature-wise... just a few screenshots to show some new things.....
Wait til Monday, of course, for the full thing to be unveiled.
If the only thing that will impress you is a completely brand new look and feel though, then yeah, you'd probably be disappointed. Apple's focus is on adding and improving features, not drastically changing the look and feel itself.
I have to assume that would be the price if you bought it without a service package. Usually there is some sort of discount if you buy it and activate it with a service plan at the same time.
Otherwise, that price seems way too out there, even with a color screen. It puts it right in line with the prices of the latest color Treo and the various PocketPC phones.
The Sidekick is supposed to be more of a consumer item, and there is just no way that price could be right, in terms of expecting its target audience to pay that much for it.
Aside from that, a $300-400 premium just because of a color screen seems like too much, even if it's the best color screen ever made.
For what it's worth, Apple does have a history of pushing some "concept" designs into the market, but they generally have limited success, usually because they inherently cost more than all but the die-hards are willing to spend. For example, the 20th Anniversary Mac, or more recently, something like the G4 Cube.
In terms of why you don't see Apple push more radical designs, it's because Apple's design philosophy is still to design practical things that can actually be used and are pleasant and fit into people's environments. There are other people out there doing just totally out there designs, but it's not something Apple wants to get into.
It's sort of the same reason you don't see car companies make more concept cars into production models. As cool as they are, there is a limited market for them (i.e. the Plymouth Prowler).
Umm, sorry, but competition for the GBA is EXACTLY how this thing is being positioned (not just that, but as something that is supposedly supposed to be superior to the GBA with its wireless gaming and 3d capabilities).
I have no idea why you're calling me a dimwit. My expectations for regular plain old cellphone games are low. Nokia has been pimping this n-gage specifically as a game machine, and has even said publically it really isn't going to be very good as a phone. This system can not be judged by the standards of other cellphone games, which are inherently simple. Nokia has set a bar and expectation that they are taking on Nintendo, and especially at $299, there is no way anyone can justify "ok, the games aren't great, but it's a cellphone!" line, because this product is being sold as a gaming device, not as just a phone that happens to have some beefed up gaming capabilities.
I've got to say, I'm a little underwhelmed by it. It looks a bit crisper than the typical GBA FPS game, but it didn't look nearly as impressive as I was expecting. The narrow gamescreen seems a little annoying too, but outside of that, the graphics just don't seem all that impressive. - Tom
Try MacKido.... they have a pretty good breakdown of the innovations at Apple between when Jobs was forced out and when he came back. Certainly Apple made a number of advances in different areas.... although at the time in the mid to late 90's, they certainly were sort of directionless.
You're talking about a Mac OS 9 system, it sounds like, which is outdated and irrelevant. Mac OS X doesn't have these problems (other apps becoming unusueable while a file is copying, etc.).
Umm, isn't there a distinction between graphic novels and "comics"? You seemed to be dismissive of people here referring to many of these things as comics, but the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil, Spider-Man, etc. are all published as comics. Sure there are some graphic novels, but those are not what are generally being adapted as movies.
I know this is just semantics, but you seem to be saying that "graphic novels" is the only proper term (and seemingly looking down on people who refer to them as comics), but comics is the proper term, and certainly not a term that anyone should be ashamed of using. I remember Neil Gaiman had a good essay a little while ago about why he makes it very clear to anyone he meets that he writes comics, and doesn't take the tact of trying to hide that or use a different term.
Not really..... Sony knows that DVD-R's can be used for pirating, etc. - but they also know that they can sell people Sony Vaio computers and Sony camcorders, so they can take their home videos, edit them on their Vaios, burn them with their Sony DVD burners, and play them on their Sony PlayStation 2 hooked up to their Sony WEGA TV.
Also, not sure if the last line was a joke or not, but Sony does make a few devices capable of playing MP3.... even a CD walkman capable of playing MP3 CD's (CD-R's burned with a bunch of mp3's on them).
Nope, it's not just your imagination. The talent pool of people who do English dubbing is both more diverse and a lot more experienced. Some of the big dub studios like Animaze/ZRO Limit, etc. have gotten a lot better. With anime becoming more popular, there is also more money to dedicate to doing good dubs, and depending less on technologies like WordFit which can really hurt the sound of a dub.
I think there is a valid point, depending on how this site is done.
For example, just as it is interesting to see which actors or characters were in various movies, I think it would be really nice to be able to look up all the books that a certain character showed up in (i.e. find all of the Heinlein works with Lazarus Long in them), as well as finding different books that deal with the same real-world people or events..... i.e. every book set during the Napoleonic Wars, for example.
I think there's a lot that is worthwhile about this idea. You are right that a knowledgeable staff at an independent book store can be helpful, but even they wouldn't necessarily have the diversity of knowledge you would find on something like this if it becomes successful. And this is a lot more than just book recommendations.... and aside from that, not everyone has access to local book stores and book clubs.
Hrmm, really interesting......definitely looking forward to hearing more about the GeForce FX 5200..... might not have the latest and greatest, but that price is pretty impressive, and much closer to what I'm willing to justify paying for a video card, as I just don't want to invest $400 to have a top of the line card. If this can handle games well, it seems like a fantastic price point. Looking forward to hearing more about these cards.
Yes, it shouldn't be flamebait (although I would probably say that Southern Cross wasn't specifically great, and Mospeada was only decent, compared to SDF Macross). Macek has gone on record numerous times saying that he thought the original Japanese creators couldn't tell a story as good as him, which is why he had no problem tearing out the original stories and putting his own story in, which he considered to be a lot better. This is of course also the same guy who thinks he can tell a better story than Miyazaki, when he hacked up Nausicaa into his "Warriors of the Wind" dubbed version of that movie.
Robotech is sort of a hacked up version of three Japanese series; Macross, Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada. The storylines were changed quite a bit, dubbed, etc. And yes, the video quality is awful.
AnimEigo released the entire original Japanese Macross series with English subtitles and the original Macross story at the end of 2001, and this year started releasing the discs individually. They spent $1 million to completely remaster and re-shoot the video, and it makes it look a lot better. And even if you're a Robotech fan, you should definitely think about checking this out so you can see the original story. ADV is planning on releasing the original Japanese versions of Mospeada and Southern Cross, but they won't be doing video remastering or anything.

In terms of why we won't see it, it will most likely have a lot more to do with the amount of money Gainax would want for this......ADV never bought the Director's Cut footage or movies because Gainax wanted an astronomical amount of money just for those.....so the amount Gainax would probably want for this newly remastered footage is probably mind-boggling. And even though Eva is a popular show, ADV also surely realizes that the number of people willing to buy Eva on DVD again just for the remastered footage is probably limited enough that there's no way they could justify the cost of bringing it out in the first place.
One thing to note with Alan Moore, he basically seems to care very little about movie versions of his work. Same thing with From Hell. He is sort of the opposite of Neil Gaiman in that regard, in that he doesn't particularly care what they do to his work in translating it to the movies. I'm sure he doesn't like the changes, but he also seems to realize that he works in comics for a reason, and that what he does in the comic books can't really be done in the movies. So for any Alan Moore-based work to be good in the movie version will depend ultimately on the people making the movie. I hear that the Watchmen script may be an exception, written by someone who really appreciates the comic and is trying very hard to do a good movie version of it.
If you say so.....either way, I just find blatant commercial plugging of your site like this to be distasteful, especially in a slashdot news article and discussion about a site that is clearly a competitor to you.
Give me a break......your site sucks, you have no community feel (no-one comments on any of the stories it seems).....and it seems like a lot of the stories are just to plug some commercial arrangement you have.....i.e. one news story on partnering up with a company that sells PS2 mod chips, and another with an affiliate link urging your community to buy a copy of RahXephon. Really ridiculous. Plug your site elsewhere.
Sorry about that.....when I said "which makes sense", I just meant that it makes sense they have to charge for it because of the encoder royalties which you cited......i.e. it makes sense that they have to charge for software that they have to pay royalties on for every copy. To a lesser degree it also makes sense because Apple doesn't seem to expect many of their potential iDVD customers to want to download a huge program, although of course it wouldn't be as big a deal for customers with broadband connections. But I can also understand Apple preferring to just sell it on CD with all of those themes and stuff.
