Much as I like free stuff and dislike DRM etc I appreciate that if I want someone to write a book, record an album or act in a film I enjoy then there needs to be some form of transaction that allows them access those little essentials that prevent them from going the way of Newton and friends. If we don't do this then you'll rapidly discover the next generation of artists doesn't exist because they are all to busy working to pay the rent.

No, you forget it may be a bad game but the addition of extreme violence to the game means that it is also "art".

After the most recent firmware update I've noticed that this doesn't happen any more and the moving and twisting responds exactly as you'd expect it to now.

  21. Re:Not the first... on The Destiny of Lord of the Rings Online · · Score: 1

SWG is not tied to the stories to the same extent as LOTRO is, while limited by featuring characters that have a story some time in the future it does not follow these characters anywhere plot wise. We may know that Darth Vader has a destiny and so cannot be killed but SWG is fixed motionless in time and we will never see it.
LOTRO is different; for those of you who haven't played it has an epic quest line that follows the books, I have not gone far in the game but have already gone from a point where missions involved clearing the way for Frodo to make it to Bree to Aragorn having to flee the Prancing Pony following a visit from the Ring Wraiths. I gather that Turbine intend to continue in this way following the story to Mount Doom. It appears right now that as opposed to SWG LOTRO will actually meet it's destiny not just sit there and look at it from a distance.

  23. It's not about the games on Mixed News for Nintendo, Microsoft · · Score: 1

I think the whole argument is flawed because it says to me "Nintendo makes great games, they sell well, are fun, and get new people to play them. This is a bad thing because third party developers can't sell their crappy games, and have to spend more time and resources to compete by making decent games."
I think people are missing who the analyst who wrote this in the first place is writing for. It's a comment on the value of investments in the gaming industry and the sole point is "how do we make a quick buck from this".
Sure we're all gamers here and we want to see developers like Nintendo and other developers pouring their heart and soul into a game and making it as good as it can be regardless of cost.
What an investor wants is the biggest return per dollar invested and that sadly means the kind of crappy film tie in that just isn't going to sell unless Nintendo stop spoiling it by producing better games. Other developers could of course spend more money and make better games but that works out good for us, not for investors.
If you read the investors note linked to in the article it's basically saying get ready to sell stock in companies that make crappy games, there may not be any money in it for much longer.
  24. Roleplay better in Europe on The Call On Lord of the Rings Online · · Score: 1

This game sounds like a bit of fun, but having looked on the sideline at these games, I'm getting a bit tired, there's nothing revolutionary here. Even worse, still it doesn't really seem to be focused on real role playing. Just another pump and dump RPG scheme in the wake of world of warcraft?
This appears to be more of a problem with how Turbine are managing the US servers (no specific flagged RP servers I believe).
Over here in Europe where the release is being run by Codemasters there is a dedicated Roleplay server (one each actually for English, French and German languages actually) with tighter naming rules and so on to ensure the experience. I've not dropped in to the server yet myself but a quick look at the English RP server's official message board suggests the players are making the most of it.

There are plenty of in game features to support roleplay too, from the simple - for example using the emote /sit while next to a chair will result in the player actually sitting in the chair and there's a good range of emotes inclooding moods which change facial expressions - to the more complicated such as the music system which allows you to buy and play your own tunes on various instruments which allows stuff like this. The tools to roleplay are there they just need to be used.
So no, the game isn't revolutionary but it is well done, the graphics give it a good atmosphere, the player versus monster player system provides an opportunity for PvP action without the opportunity for griefing, class roles are just different enough from the standards to make them feel familiar but original, the quest texts if you read them give far more story than most MMOs I've encountered (and the epic quest line provides a genuine story that tracks along with the journey of Frodo and friends), the focus on gaining experience from quest completion rather than kills makes the game feel far less of a grind and the people playing seem to be a generally friendly and polite bunch compared to the WoW crowd.
I don't see the game beating WoW in terms of numbers but as long as they keep the servers stable and keep the kind of additional content promised in their first post relase patch rolling in on a regular basis I could see it being the number two 'western' MMORPG.

    3) The cost of legal fees and vet bills for treating spontaniously combusted neigbours pets would be taken in to account.

The parent's point still holds, the important factor is the total cost of a PV system (installation, land space, maintenance and enclosure costs included) divided by the power it produces.
