/. is a news site...right there in the slogan "news for nerds..."

News \News\, n [From New; cf. F. nounelles. News ?s plural in form, but is commonly used with a singular verb.]
    1. A report of recent occurences; information of something that has lately taken place, or of something before unknown; fresh tindings; recent intelligence.
now basically news is defined as reporting of facts. the thing is that we seriously doubt JonKatz...he is the origional karma whore. its just that if he had any journalistic integrity, he would at least post the email, or tell the truth. but as we have all come to find out, he enjoys pulling stale nuggets out of his ass and posting that shit on /. now some people ignore his posts (i'm sure that's why it was put in) but i keep his in so i can see himself make a larger and larger fool. News != symbolism. there is nothing symbolic about "hey this kid in afganistan emailed me..." we just know he's full of shit and can't understand why he is allowed to post stories, especially when its neither news or shit we care about. so hows about you quit being a pussy?

    so let me recap:
    1. JonKatz sucks...not even an online mags or reputable news agencies would hire him.
    2. he makes shit up to look cool
    3. he's not cool...because he makes up news.

you pay for most channels on cable. certain channels like M2 (MTV2) were free, now pay.

cable companies get their feeds from various sats, they pay per set. so channels like HBO cost around $1, but channels like TBS cost like $.25. the do deals where if you get 4 turner channels you get the 5th free. when i worked for a cable company our average bill per set was around $7.50.

most cable channels are paid for, if they are not thats what the adverts are for. often times local stations will insert their own commercials (those cheap cheesey produced ones like the old dirt devil commercials).

John Devorak is a fossil...he is only dating himself by saying stupid shit like this. TiVo isn't stupid, pretty soon they'll figure out, if they haven't already, how to insert commercials when you turn on your reciever or the TV, etc. and whats to keep the people from doing the same thing with a VCR, this is just cleaner :) i like tivo, my roommate has the sony reciever with it. you can bet i'm getting one as soon as i move out.

anyway they called in my father the next day, they told him, yada yada, then he asked me to step out. when i came back in they told me that nothing was going to happen and that i was to never do that again. a slap on the wrist basically.

well on the way home my dad told me that when i closed the door it went like this:

dad: so how do you know what he was doing?
admin: we have logs that log any wrong activity.
    dad: may i see this?
    admin: its been deleted
dad: ok, do you have a set of rules or contract that he signed saying this is an unacceptable activity?
    vp: actually no.
dad: so basically you're telling me that you have no evidence and no rule for what he's done and you want to suspend him for 5 days out of school, possibly even look into expulsion?
    vp: yes
dad: if you do that i will sue this district for everything. you will not even look unkindly upon my son, or you will hear from my lawyer.

needless to say it was cool, but there was more rules next year. sometimes all it takes is someone with a strong will to stand up, hell they prolly could have suspended me, but my dad made it plain as day that i had rights and without proof they had no case.

i'm not going to say this is the case all the time...i just tend to notice this. that and my employer doesn't mind sending me to confrences and training to make me smarter on how to do my job.

if you go into a interview and they say: "show us how to get info from two tables using one select statement (sql)" and you can't do it...your screwed. if you can your in.

one last thing. all the teach now a days is java, asp, and VB. since when did academic and commercially viable solutions like perl and C get the shaft. no wonder employers will hire ppl w/o degrees, you can't get any education in those languages that are still very practical.
