Sure, give them computer education. But I still don't see how learning about an ancient machine is going to help modern kids. I learned about fortran and punch cards when I was in school and I really don't feel like any of it was that valuable. If anything, why not just have them mess around with a modern computer? If the goal is to just familiarize them with components. Showing someone an ancient machine seems like a waste of time.

If we are training kids for the future we should definitely have them use a windows/linux variant. I remember back in the university our C++ class had a computer lab that was split between Macs and PCs. The PCs would always be all in use and I had to make do on a mac. I definitely did not enjoy having to do everything differently than the majority of the class, but my teacher appreciated me taking one for the team. If anything I think having a multi platform environment would be good for students having to deal with different platforms at different companies.

I was thinking about Sony's consumer electronics strategy. A pair of their most successfully products, the walkman and later the discman were amazingly successful. 1) Because they looked and worked awesome. 2) Used the industry standard media that everyone had. I remember loving my sony cybershot camera, except to get the photos off I had to use the ghetto sony picture software and a serial connection. (They didn't like usb for a long time for some reason) It seems that everytime they try and shoehorn us into their (usually inferior) proprietary formats they screw themselves. Sony makes great looking products, they just need to stop forcing consumers into proprietary shite.

Well I guess I won't get gold support. Whatever warranty we get with Dell Small Business gives me next day support. I don't have to deal with five different manufacturers, I can call just one. And in my experience, these days dell doesn't spend a lot of time troubleshooting if you make it clear you've already tried everything. On the home front, I've purchased a c640 latitude with complete care warranty and YES they come next day with whatever part breaks. In the three years i've owned the c640, I've replaced the lcd twice (two accidental breakings) the keyboard once(broke some keys), the motherboard once (fan died), and finally the dvd/cd-rw (was kind of acting up) just for fun. I don't think Dell is the god of computer company's but they certainly aren't bad enought to be characterized as crap. Compared to other companies I think they do pretty well for a computer seller.

6 months to get the printer to work?!?!! Its pretty clear to me that from a user experience standpoint, some tasks in linux are just a pain in the arse to get working. Sometimes I wonder if linux people take 5 minutes to imagine if a tool or function is user friendly? I mean you got to admit the current state of windows for the average user is getting pretty sweet. Peripherals most often can install themselves, drivers are easy to find if not already in windows somewhere, and each new iteration of windows has more legacy support (like hp tcp/ip port support) just built-in. Don't get me wrong, linux today is way easier than it was 5 years ago. There is more info online, and linux does detect some stuff out of the box. But snobby attitude is only going to hold it back. Macos X is a good example of a basically user friendly unix os. Maybe start there.

I was an early palm adopter. I had a Palm, then a Palm III. At the time it was the best PDA avaiable with a lot of third party software available. Then color Windows CE devices started coming out. They came with Pocket Word and other apps that integrated easy with Windows. I really like how nice the integration was syncing with outlook. One of the nicer PDAs was an Ipaq. Had to get one. After that I never looked back to Palm. It got to the point where palm was behind technology wise (took a while for them to get color, wireless, bluetooth, faster processors) and eventually on the software side, they were getting more and more behind.
