I always refuse to show my receipt / property when leaving Fry's (the worst in my opinion) / other stores. I also refuse to wait in line to leave. I just walk by and leave. Only once has the "loss prevention employee" tried to stop me. I simply informed him everything in my bag and on my person was my property and if he wished to search it he would need to call a law enforcement officer. I also informed him that if he tried to grab me I would consider it assault and I would defend myself. I do not surrender my right to privacy because I enter a privately owned store. Their effective recourse is to inform me I am unwelcome to return, ask me to leave and/or call law enforcement if I refuse.

As to blocking my car in the parking lot, that sounds pretty much like the textbook definition of unlawful detention / kidnapping. Maybe a call to the FBI is in order.

One note on not keeping the logs. Picture this:

FBI/Secret Service Agent shows up with a warrant, and you give a glib reply that "you have not kept logs" or "I am not required by law to keep any logs". They have already subpoena'd your upstream provider and tracked the (insert illegal activity here) to an IP under your control. They arrest you and sieze all your computer gear + all cd/dvd/tape/other media, for their investigation.

You sit and rot in federal lockup and try to explain it was not me, it was my neighbor that was downloading kiddy porn, hacking a bank, etc.

  19. Re:What do current taxes do? on Will FCC Regulate Internet Phone Calls? · · Score: 1

I have a couple of problems with the FCC and their "service fees".

    1. These fees are self serving. The Federal agency that BENEFITS from the "fee", decides if the "fee" is necessary, then decides the amount and finally decides the services to which it applies. What happened to seperation of powers?

    2. These are clearly taxes, but the FCC prevents the local telcos from listing it as a tax. The Telco which lists this has to list it as a fee! This may seem like a slight differnce, but Joe Average consumer has dificulty determining which are fees from the Telco, and which are government mandated fees (taxes).

    3. This shifts the burden for collecting taxes from the federal government to the local telcos.

    4. Taxes should be called taxes, not fees. They should be voted for by publicly elected officials or directly by the electorate, not by lackey appointies who are not really answerable to the voting public.

These are just my opinions, as always your milage may vary.
