I am no biologist, but isn't downs syndrome caused by the "freak" addition of an extra chromosome? If this is the case couldn't something like this happen with great rarity in mules resulting in a 64-chromosome mule, which would be capable of breading?
I have seen this statement in reference to computer fans so many times, as someone who has worked in aeroacoustic modeling for a while, I am appalled by the lack of knowledge exhibited by most, generally intelligent and well informed,/. readers on this topic. The vast majority of the air flow in computers is laminar regardless of the fan installed; the characteristic length of the case is just too small. The primary source of the fan noise is the rotating fan blade wakes impacting on stationary objects in a periodic fashion. This is responsible for the hums or whines coming from the machine. The turbulence noise is much more broadband, it is more of a rumble or a roar. The quite fans are designed to have lower momentum deficits in the wakes, or slower fan speeds...
An example that comes to mind is jet engines (that is where my aeroacoustic experience was). Next time you are at the airport listen to the jets. When they are idling at the gate, there is a whine (more than anything else) that is the fan at the front of the engine. When they throttle up for take off the noise keeps on whining, but the roar that grows is turbulence in the shear layer formed at the nozzle exit.
I think you are making mountains out of molehills... The radiation is going to be pretty insignificant even with a ~90% change in contact area over the temperature range we are dealing with, besides all of the additional exposed area on the probe that is not in direct contact with the surface will be in the thermal boundary layer, which will be pretty damn close to the actual surface temperature.
And no, my HS physics classes was rather excellent. In 1996 I placed 13th in the state of Illinois for performance on the JETS academic challenge physics exam, and I now work as an aerospace engineer at a large jet engine company, I deal primarily with hot section parts, gas temperatures of over 4000 deg f in the immediate vicinity of metals what degrade quickly at temperatures in the slightly under 2000 range. So don't accuse me of not knowing my shit when it comes to heat transfer!
You should acount for noise and vibration if you are going to do that, they can have a large amount of energy too...
Also a grainy texture will not in any way effect a surface temperature probe. It will effect heat transfer, and that will make it take longer to reach the temperature, but heat will transfer until the temps are the same, it's HS level physics.
Correct me if I am wrong but part of this knee jerk as it relates to the CANDU goes back to the cold war, when we were using breaders all the time to get plutonium. There was a law passed banning breader reactors for comercial use. The CANDU is a breader, but it consumes it's own plutonium without reconfiguration.
You are the one who looses the smarts prize. As an aerospace engineer, I can tell you that speed relative to the local speed of sound is all we care about, when it comes to Mach number. There is no point in looking at anything else! Coincidentaly 10.1Gs is the right answer. There is no need to integrate, I solved the problem in this post.
If you assume a constant accleration, which is not the case (this is because the atmosphere is more dense at low altitudes, and means that the drag is much higher on the rocket towards the begining of it's flight), then you can calculate the acceleration.
You really need to take into account the fact that the speed of sound decreases with altitude. Using data from the U.S. standard atmosphere of 1976, in a non-linear shooting method and an initial guess of 98m/s/s...
99m/s/s or 10.1G reaching mach 5.0 at an altitude of 11138 meters
(the shooting method turned out to be linear because the speed of sound is constant to 4 significant figures between 11000 andd 20000 meters)
The government is indirectly endorsing religion if it gives money to a charity (say a soup kitchen) that assists those in need but requires them to pray to recieve the assistance. Many church affiliated homeless shelters offer free meals, but hold a prayer before them. This is a violation of the 1st amendment.
What does this do to the homeless person? (hypothetical specifics below) If the homeless person is a christian and so is the charity, great, they are full in the stomach and the soul. But, if a Jew is in need of assistance, they have to either pray with them, and go against their faith (speaking the word G_D, or pronouncing Jesus as their savior), and be full of stomach, but empty in soul, or eat without praying leaving them full of stomach, but also full of guilt, or not eat, leaving them full in the soul but starving for nutrition. The alternative, charities with no religious affiliation, provide food and the opportunity to pray if you see fit, with no pressure to go against your faith.
The article (as well as this one) suggest that it works by killing cells that would form a tumor.
So what I want to know is will this work after exposure? Can this be used as a post sunburn insurance policy? Can older folks who got burned when they were young use this to reduce their risk?
I am extremely pale, and though I have been pretty careful my whole life I still get burned, and all of my ascendants that lived past 55 have had some form of skin cancer. It would be great if this could still lower my risk, or help my parents!
I think bin Laden knows quite well that he worships the same god as the Christians and the Jews, and he knows about Jesus. Bin Laden is a very educated man, who was a mujahadin (sp?) in the 1980's war with the USSR, during which the CIA was aiding the mujahadin. The mujahadin accepted this help largely because the folks from the CIA knew "the book" meaning the bible, as apposed to the atheistic Soviets they were fighting.
What I think about bin Laden is that he is manipulating the less educated and highly devoted.
I am an atheist raised by loosely Christian parents, and I must say that the more I learn about either Judaism or Islam (true Islam) the more I like the fundamentals of each, but I am not one for ceremony (besides that whole almighty being thing I don't buy), both have a lot of that... So I will not be converting any time soon
It is not just red wine (and it is the skins of the grapes in that case). Research (previously linked) has shown that most alcoholic beverages consumed in moderation do improve heart health, one of the most accepted theories on this is that the 2-5 drinks per week, not all in one day crowd has a more relaxed life style (not necisarily less work, but less worried about it) and therefor less stress, and fewer heart problems.
I was pointing out the error of the post which I was replying too.
Read their post:
Darwin stopped working when we started living in civilized societies. 10,000 years ago someone with bad eyesight would be lion food so only people with good eyes would be around long enough to breed. Now you have kids that die after smelling a peanut or getting a cold.
I was stating that at the time that humans began to live as societies the survival priorities changed.
Next time, read the thread before point out my mistakes.
Darwin stopped working when we started living in civilized societies.
Darwin didn't stop working, he just started favoring those that are best suited to survive in society. So now it is not the fastest or strongest that survive, but those who bargan the best, or are persuasive enough to get others to do the dangerous work of the society.
A lot of people who would be getting these transplants are likely past child bearing age anyway, and would not have an exponential effect on population growth. And since they probably already reproduced, they don't have any evolutionary effect either.
The kids are usually given higher priority when it comes to getting human organs now (the have their whole lives ahead of them... and all that) and I see no reason for that to change, since the pig organs will probably never be as good as the real thing.
All this will do is make it so the older folks who were dying without organs before can get transplants and watch their grandkids with the human organs in 'em play in the back yard...
if you put *everyone* into the database, you lose the effectiveness of the database, and therefore it's worthless to the investigators. This is specifically designed to save money by cutting the time it takes to investigate crimes.
I disagree, I think the only fair database of precriminals you can have is all inclusive. Anyone can be a criminal, and if they are looking for a 6'1", 205lb, 20 something bearded white male who lives in a certain suburban neighborhood, I should be a result in their search query. This is not saying that additional intelligence could not be included. You could include information on known gang association, suspicion of previous crimes... Then, for instance if the police had reason to believe that there was gang involvement that could narrow the search.
I am not saying that I am in favor of police tactics like this, I am not... But if they must be used, I insist that they do not limit their searches in such a way.
I run 30+ miles a week, I play soccer, I lift wieghts 4 times a week, and I am going to run my first marathon in about 7 weeks.
BUT
After a hard day of working and working out, I like to sit on the couch and do absolutly nothing for an hour or two, and I don't think that is a problem, do you?!?
I am sure that there are plenty of other athletic/.ers out there, just like me (I personally know at least two), who enjoy TV and hate it when people who don't know assume that I am a fat lasy american just because I am an engineer who can talk about what was on The Simpsons last night!

Electric Armor

The plates only form a circuit during the impact, the offending material (enemy round), which closes the circuit, is vaporized by the impact, and the same plates can be reused as is...
The actual area of the piercing in the outer plate would be very small (~4cm), so I think the multiple hits capability is assuming that no two of them are in the EXACT same place.
The things I would be worried about are 1. How close in time the hits can be, I assume that the plates would have to be recharged after a hit, I wonder how long that would take. 2. What if the tank gets hit when it is not turned on?
Thanks, but I still don't see the incompatability...
Now tell me this: How could the evolutionary process, which we have never in recorded history observed to occur, happen in six days? The evolutionary time scale requires millions upon millions of years to occur -- the Bible specifically states that the earth was created in six days.
The evolutionary process did not occur in 6 days... Why does the whole of evolution have to have taken place in those 6 days? Why can no one accept the posibility of creation, then evolution?

you could just use the cold tap...
That is why I said to use an INTEGER MULTIPLE of the frequency...
Why not just put a camera in the center of the centrifuge, and have it snap a frame on some integer multiple of the centrifuge's frequency?
