What I don't understand is WHY QuickBooks won't run on a Term Server without paying for a special license.
If you're that worried about multiple users, make a file lock that keeps it from being run multiple times (yes, I know a crashed app can kill that from working properly.. too bad Windows doesn't use PID's as much as *nux).
You CAN make Quickbooks single user run on a TS.. but it has to be an administrator type user.
I live in Kansas City. If the city put in free wireless in our downtown - nobody would use it. There's nothing in our down town to do.. after 5:00PM (except buy drugs, hookers, or be on a cleaning crew).
A city running something like that would give me the willies anyway. Who's to say they wouldn't be monitoring every piece of information - and/or someone sitting there with AirSnort doing the same..
I couldn't imagine using Apple OSx for my web servers. However, I could imagine myself sitting at a shiny macintosh..
However, I develop a M$ application in *horror* Access */horror* so I'm kinda sorta stuck on M$ winders...
I do believe that with OSx making inroads as it is, it should kick the KDE/Gnome/whatever developers to copy^H^H^H^H modify their code and make the environment similar or equal to the usability of the Macintosh.
Until your average Joe can use Linux, it won't be "The Killer" way to compute. Only the unwashed masses will use it on their desktop.
i was around 98 wpm for the fishing in finland, until i hit that huge weird word i'd never heard of.. then i dropped down to around 77 for the final score...
i worked for a consulting company for a year. they liked my work, and thought i was an outstanding net engineer.
one weekend on a bet i bleached my hair. however it didn't go blonde, but more of an orange-yellow.
got to work that monday they told me to go home and either cut it off or dye it to black or brown. i am brown normally, so I said "ok.. jet black".
They said no. not that either.
i brought up that it was discrimination. they said nope.. i said "but you allow sales ladies to bleach their hair". they said "that's different".
I ended up going home, shaving my hair and coming back. that evening i cleaned out my cabinet drawer, pulled my computer apart and took MY parts home. next morning i handed the boss a sheath of papers with all my clients' info on it and quit.
he said "You're not even going to give me the benefit of two weeks?"
Downloads games? Wow. Does it come with a free 10g fiber connection to the house?
With the console games getting as fat as they've been (i.e. full DVD media) how in the hell do you expect people to download that much material (for one) and since it's not on a copy protected media, how would you trust that someone wouldn't just copy if off the local HD and play it for free?
And dont tell me about subscription unlocks and stuff. If they've figured out how to mod an XBox to play pir..err..copie...err.. BACKED UP games, hacked Windows XP to not need activation, hacked DirecTV / Dish / Cable / whatever, then surely whatever "authentication scheme" they choose will be broken, too.....
I wonder why Microsoft wouldn't actually PARTICIPATE in this project, or even write a low-cost version of it's own to (yes, I'm going to say it on Slashdot) sell.
Sure, it's kind of stabbing it's main flagship product in the back, but isn't that what their "Windows Lite" for the Asian markets do?
Since Indian companies are creating little cheap Linux laptops/computers, Asian companies are selling little cheap Linux computers, why would Microsoft not sell a $35 add-on for Linux, tightly registration controlled (Yes, I said that, too) that allows Microsoft-compiled applications to run on Linux.
Don't jump on me for saying Microsoft should write for Linux. Of course they should. It's unfathomable that they DONT support Linux. Heck, even monolithic old NOVELL is supporting their products on the triad of main OS'es now. Linux, MS-WIN and Mac. They're even migrating Netware to a Linux base.
When %Politician% from %party% starts driving electric cars to political rallies.. then it's leadership by example. But.. where do they get the power for said electric cars? Coal burning power plants. So is it really LESS pollution to drive an electric car than an oil powered one?
No.
So what? Build huge wind farms? Sorry, the environmentalist commies say it's too hard on the local birds, who fly into the blades and splatter.
Nuclear? Even with all the safety advances, the environmentalist commies rally and attack and block and sing kumbahyah (sp) in front of the bulldozers...
Oil? Heck no! Save our forests (from the same environmentalist commies).
Wait! I got it. Hydrogen power.
Duuh, where you do think they're getting the hydrogen. Passing large amounts of power through water. They get Oxygen, too, but where does the power come from? Coal! Right.
Oh, you say electrolysis. How do they heat the metals. Coal. Bingo.
The answer here is there IS no answer. Joe Fatass Public isn't going to stop driving his SUV cuz it's gunna get cold next century.
Something's gotta give.. and the environmentalist commies.. wont allow it TO give.
It's amazing that people think that Bush limited stem cells. He limited Government FUNDED stem cell research to a few lines. He did not, however, sign any legislative piece into law that said if you were privately funded you could not perform stem cell research.
The media never says it that way, though.
And like sheep (no pun intended).. we just eat it up..
I have a client who's mail servers I migrated to a Co-Lo facility. I changed the name server TTL way low about 2 weeks in advance.
The day I moved them (friday at 5:00) I pointed all the DNS records to the CO-Lo facility.
The next Wednesday the owner of a competing business (the business who serves my clients' peer company) accused me of changing the domain in the middle of the week. It seems that his Microsoft Exchange server had cached the OLD IP address and would not look up the new one.
I told his engineer to reboot their Exchange server - had a 20 minute argument with him about. He finally did and it re-looked up the DNS for the new server. Problem solved.
However the idiot owner of the other company still blamed it on me, said I was incompetent for doing the change in the middle of the week (friday?!?!?) and all that.
Get a plastic "keyboard condom" that you can get wet, or get one of those waterproof rollable keyboards. Set up a squirt bottle next to it that when you're done mists a little bit of alcohol on it. Or better yet, let it be automagic.
I don't see a problem here. The hospitals just dont want to spend the extra $$ so they're griping about it. Dump the shiny dell/hp/ibm/whatever keyboard and get something that's somewhat disinfectible.
It's their network. If they dont want you using BT, then dont use BT.
However, I'd send a letter back. State that while illegal files can and are downloaded using BitTorrent, you were just using it for legal purposes. There is no laws governing protocols at this time (as far as if they can or cannot be used).
Also put something in there like "However I do respect that this is your network and will abide by the rules. I apologize for any issues I might have caused."
They released Cedega for Linspire that costs $45 (and includes a WHOLE YEAR) to download and install .. through Linspires "buy software" function...
.. well .. weird?
Am I missing something here?
Isn't Cedega / P2P like $5 a month??
Oh, and isn't the redundant "Click here to pay for a software that will let you click to play a game.." kinda
Flame away.

So no
Gogo Novell!
.. and that (as Martha says) would be a GOOD THING.
Now if we could just get the DHS to run it, we'd be even MORE secure...
But the best part? It'd REALLY piss Billy Gates off
Movie Tickets - $10.00
..
Stale Popcorn / Watery Drink - $25.00
Custom Sith costume - $175
Lightsaber Replica (that you REALLY REALLY wished it worked) $75
Getting made fun of on Slashdot because you're a LAMER standing in line IN COSTUME for a movie
PRICELESS..

Of course the party line is "Stop polluting".

Mod me down, whatever...
It's interesting. When someone signs up for something, they just decide to click the button to receive it.
When they want to un-subscribe (from a legitimate source) they use the tools provided to them to get rid of it as easily as they can.
Perhaps it's because the computer industry as a whole preaches to them "You'll never be unsubscribed from ANYTHING, by following the directions."
So they hit the "Mark as spam" button and go on with life - the minor annoyance is gone and they can browse their porn uninterupted..

I dont know about you .. but my Road Runner is 5mbit/sec .. not 512k. That's only 25 years!
But seriously. What do you transfer then? I mean, how many Libraries of Congress do you need sitting around on disk.

Grrrr...
I've always thought it would be extremely possible to create a file with the same MD5 hash.
.. then I'll be impressed.
Now, what the company has to do is create a file of the SAME FILE SIZE, with the same MD5 hash that's a fake
