A small private company would want to invest the billions necessary to go to Mars because ?? What possible financial gain gould they possibly realise within any realistic timeframe for a company's survival. Who would back them, who would insure them? Would they go and claim Mars for themselves if they got there in the best capitalist manner ?

Proper space exploration is better left to the big boys and international co operation for the time being. Hopefully they can learn something from the independent efforts in the meantime

Ah yes but unfortunatly the 'memories' of the rat constitute a mental image, or copy of its programming (copyrighted of course) and so its actually illegal for the rat to think.

In view of this the DMCA plan to force the rats to listen to Michael Jackson singing Ben repeatedly until they die of depression (The researchers will of course be required to pay royalties for each playing).

  18. Re:Seriously ... on Java Enterprise In A Nutshell · · Score: 1

Yes but this is a book about enterprise programming so it needs to look big and important. Including all the API is a very convenient way of padding out a book, ignoring the fact that all this stuff is available via javadoc anyway.

The reviewer bemoans the fact that some of the samples are a bit lightweight. To take the servlet example he gives, at least they note its bad practice. The number of reference manuals I have seen that advocate opening JDBC connections direct from JSP pages is just shocking.

Enterprise development is a little bit like hard work. Its really not meant to be easy. I dont say that from an arrogant point of view. Its just that in general enterprise development is usually about encapsulating systems which are inherrently complex. If more complete samples with greater complexity were given I think many developers would quickly get bogged down. Just look at many of the questions asked on the SUN j2ee mailing lists to get a picture of what I mean. Its no harm to have something straightforward to get you started.

As a last note I think the reviewers comment about Dot Net was childish and out of context with the review. Some aspects of dot net are excellent and surpass their j2ee equivalent just as j2ee excells in other areas.
