  1. Definite purchase on Java Performance Tuning, 2nd Ed. · · Score: 3, Informative

I have drastically cut back on my tech book purchases in recent times but this book will definitely be on my shopping list. The First edition offered many insights into not only getting the best performance from Java but also solid guidelines for when and where to apply optimisations.
As a side note I would disagree about performance being an albatross for Java. Well written Java code can be very high performant just as poorly written code in ANY language can perform slowly. Many of the performance issues associated with Java are inexperienced developers using inappropriate methods and objects.

  6. Interesting read on Analysis of RIAA vs Princeton Student · · Score: 5, Interesting

Based on the article the RIAA claims have serious flaws. I dont doubt that the wake system did 'facilitate' illegal sharing of material by making it easier to find if noting else but it does not seem to fit many of the criteria to satisfy the claims. From what I cam make of the article it almost looks as if MS are much much to blame for providing the file transfer infrastructure !!
Given the way things are going though I think its only a question of time before the network and infrastructure admins are the ones held liable for the software running on their systems. Massive lawsuits against students are ridiculous and will damage public perception. How long before they go after the universities etc who at least will have insurance to cover the financial claims.

  7. Not a surprise really on Still More on Global Warming · · Score: 0, Troll

It never ceases to amaze me the level of arrogance among many environmentalists and conservationsist. Forever telling us how they feel things are supposed to be, and completely overlooking the billions of years of evolution, change and constant fluctuations it has taken us to get here. Its perfectly natural for our temperatures to fluctuate. Its not that long since we had a fucking Ice age so a bit of warming is not an inherently bad thing.

Are many individuals (on their own machines and not he company hardware) actually running the SETI client? I started it back in 1999 but gave up when I discovered that it took about 24hrs to process one unit on my 366 Toshiba laptop making it rather unlikely that at that rate I would live long enough to find anything. To be honest I had pretty much forgotten about the project altogether.

Looks like the "network is the computer" line is getting a revamp here. From the article the focus would appear to be a thin client rather than a full on desktop. Mc Nealy really needs to let go of this idea if Sun is to progress. It failed miserably in the past and I cant see a compelling reason why it will work now.

  23. Cant agree with this on The Tyranny of Email · · Score: 1

I would argue that email is the least intrusive form of communication. I can read it when I please, respond when I feel appropriate and consider my responses while I perform some other task.
If communication is not via email then its by phone so everyones phones are ringing constantly and there is high background chatter, and I pretty much am expected to respond immediately. If not by comminication by phone then face to face communication is worse again in terms of distraction because I am force to direct all my attention to the person I am conversing with.
Its coding, not brain surgery. If it takes the author 3 hours to get up to speed and they find it difficult to manage in a normal interactive working environment then I would advise alternative employment.
