  1. Combine This With Gold And Watch Out... on DNA Origami · · Score: 1

This article immediately reminded me of research on how to control DNA remotely using radio waves I read about a few years ago. Adding gold nanoparticles to the "DNA staples" of the current work should allow the creation of I/O devices to get from our human scale to this nanoscale to build true supercomputers.

I like David Gerrold, and I've enjoyed some of his recent "lighter" SF books including his Dingilliad trilogy, but c'mon, the guy needs to get a move on and finish the next installment of his masterwork, A Method For Madness. I'm still trapped in the Amazon, wondering what happens next in the War Against The Chtorr.

  15. What A Gamble on The Browncoats Rise Again · · Score: 4, Interesting

I thought a long time about what I'd seen after a four hour drive home from a preview showing, and the main thought I came up with is this. We live in very uncertain times and the main attraction of Firefly that inspired its cult following was the comfort of a family that would weather all dangers. That comfort is gone in this movie. It is a GREAT movie, but it somewhat lacks the core quality that drew people to Firefly in the first place. SO, whether this is just a better than average movie release or the beginning of the pop cultural phenom the fans had hoped it would be remains to be seen.

This "new" approach of achieving fusion using strong electric fields is of much greater significance than just academic interest in fusion research. It may well lead directly to EM-pulse-based clean-fusion bombs that don't need a fallout-producing plutonium atomic-bomb trigger. There are a LOT of ways to produce REALLY strong electromagnetic fields for a fraction of a second and let's face it, many of these can be done in your basement. So...are homemade nukes closer as a result of this discovery?

Just a note from another Huntsvillian - the one at the rest stop is actually a Saturn 1B. Another Saturn 1B is upright at the USSRC, and the real Saturn V there is on its side. The Saturn V at USSRC that's "standing up" is a total fake and boondoggle to boot - $15 million in bond money to build, pork passed behind the Alabama State government's back. The fake one standing up costs over 25 times what they want to restore the real one on its side. Absolutely crazy.

I am a TiVO fanatic and the only reason somebody would find such a thing frightening is because they didn't have a Tivo themselves. There is no good analogy about why Tivo makes such a difference, but it does. OK, Ill try an analogy anyway. Say it's the 1600s and you always walked to town to hear what the town cryer was saying. Then somebody offers you home delivery of a new thing called a newspaper. Would you still walk to town to hear the town cryer? Would you laugh at people who called you frighteningly fanatical over newspapers?
