All energy on Earth (except geothermal) comes from the Sun originally.
Not heard of nuclear power? All matter can be converted to energy and vice versa. Does E = mc^2 ring a bell? I haven't seen Part2 yet, but "a new form of fusion" from the comments certainly alludes to this.
Still, the whole "humans for power" thing sounds like crap unless they add some sort of metaphysical/magic element that isn't so ludicrous to current physics. How about "the entropy generated virtually within the minds of the humans can be harvested by the matrix". IANAP, but it would probably sound better and a little more credible.
I think saying fresco is "dead" is a little harsh. They're still releasing (M2 came out 2003-03-04), but development is slow and I think Duke Nukem Forever and e20 will be released before fresco could make itself a replacement for the maturing X11-based desktops. Hopefully the project will develop the framework to a point where its possible to start writing new applications.
As for now, I'll stick with xp and fluxbox. And OSX when I save the money for a mac heh. However, I'll continue to support directFB and fresco over XFree86 just so that the projects get the much deserved attention that is essential to their success. Lets hope I wont have to install XFree86 in five years time to get a decent desktop under *nix.
And btw, fresco can (/ hopefully will) coexist with DirectFB. Also, using the fb (that penguin logo on bootup) is slower than pure console - check/usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt "graphic mode is slower than text mode."
True, but it can prompt other countries to consider similar legislation, not to mention setting a persuasive precedent in the judiciary once a few US cases have been ruled on. Just look at how the DMCA is being exported.
When you want to use a language that gets compiled and runs at high speed, the best language to use is C. Using another language is like using a non-standard feature: it will cause trouble for users.
Well if this isn't a recommendation for C, tell me what is?
The RIAA has no problem with money (whether or not their artists are suffering), so what makes you think they can't hire a decent coding team? Its not like a couple of the RIAA execs and lawyers that did a VB course will be writing these utilties. From the fact that they are postponing the release suggests that they are aware of the (financial) repercussions of deleting legit music off victim's computers.
Furthermore, don't you think they could afford to hire some real (non-script-kiddie) hackers(imo cracking will always be RE) ? Now that the profession is being legalised, freelance hackers that havent been inducted into government institutions (NSA?) now have a legal employment oppurtunity. Due to the scarcity of people with appropriate skills, I'm sure it would pay quite well.
DirectFB still has a lot of questions to answer. AFAIK there is still not window management protocol for instance - X11 provides a lot of things most people don't think about, DirectFB would have to provide equivalents first.
That's why I'd love to see fresco enjoy some more support/activity/interest.
The same reason I don't publish studies about this comment. People can read it, they can interpret it sentence by sentence, they can paraphrase it, and they too can use word count.
Hell, they can even ask a lawyer what some clauses mean.
I think saying that Telstra is a government approved monopoly is a bit harsh. Apart from the whole existence of the ACCC (for what it's worth), the monopolistic state of Telstra atm isn't really approved by the government so much as tolerated (what are they going to do about it that would be in both the shareholders and the people of Australia's interests). After all, its been better since the telco industry was opened up (remember when telecom australia was a true state monopoly?).
Personally I'm in favour of having all the infrastructure retained by the government (and thus the people of Australia). Whether the overlying services get further privatised or not I'm fairly apathetic to. It could go either way in terms of competition.
Obtw, I don't think the 1GB per month is a 'typical' plan for the broadband sector (other ISPs included). If you're on a network with free WAIX (most non-Telstra ISPs), then you can d/l all 7 debian cds, and all the M$ updates for free;). Hardly anyone i know has Telstra ADSL; most are with a WAIX network. On-peak/non-WAIX caps are set at 3 Gb for most of my friends' ADSL plans.
But Marc Zwillinger, the chief litigator in DirecTV's war on piracy, says Ump25's posts aren't much different from posting a DVD descrambling program to the Internet, which has been ruled illegal in the past.
Too often we relate some issue as being a Microsoft invention and thus evil when all along it's been incorporated in a different form in our favourite OS.
/me waits optimistically for support of mono:: Well... possibly not all along.
The SMH article is complete crap, you'll have to concede that.
But remind me again exactly how this was 'research'? A few statistics, and a summarized restatement of the blatantly obvious. I could have told you the same things as this study, with a little time to dredge through the M$ EULA. Come on, "Confirms the impressions I've felt for a while", did you never read either license?
Come on, 7 people to come up with this? Surely a dictionary and Tools>Word Count can't be that hard to find.
Sure, if the text of the pdf got put in a slashdot comment, I'd mod it up informative, but its not like its journal quality at all.
why don't you stop using rh/mdk/bloateddistros and start using a distro where the default/base really is just a base.
gentoo is good, and even debian can be "a really cool dist the size and speed of a fresh win98 install", but dependencies may introduce a bit of bloat.
I wonder how many gentoo users began looking for a new distro before they'd got to reading the Note... I know I nearly did.
*eek* no USE;)

Well, if you convert the decimal into hex then its 0x32 (or 32h or however u want to write it). If you then give this to someone who has never heard of hex, then its 32, or 2^5. How this should matter when its his golden jubilee anyway i have nfi.
Here in perth I'm pretty sure the buses are tracked via some GPS-like system. The reason I think so is that the box next to the driver beeps whenever the bus crosses into a new (ticket pricing) section.
I suspect the transport company could rig something up to get web updates on bus positions, but from the way their site has gone downhill over the last year (I keep getting ASP.NET errors ffs) i doubt this is going to happen.

Sorry, it reminds me of school. Admittedly, TV/games came first.

Yes, because we all know how wrong DeCSS was.

I wonder if PicoGUI will reap the same benefits as X from these kernel changes.
Have a look at strokeit
:p
Fairly customizeable, and neat for a while, but eventually I decided that I could do everything more efficiently directly from emacs
These guys have some intuitive ideas (without escaping the keyboard/pointer paradigm), and were featured on slashdot a while back.
Their layouts include Programmer's Qwerty, Programmer's dvorak, and their own "QWERAK".
